Chapter 8

Author: White Poplar
Six years later, Austin threw a bracelet into my face for an employee he barely knew and berated me for being dramatic.

When I got into a car accident, he rolled up his window and sped off, not wanting to delay his date with Carmen. In the end, he even locked me up in a room, denying me my fundamental human rights.

My heart was supposed to ache at those painful recollections, but I felt strangely calm then.

I said, "I loved you, Austin. It was my choice, and I didn't resent it. It's also a choice that I no longer feel anything for you, and I don't regret it. Some things are meant to end, and our relationship is one of them."

However, he seemed not to have listened to a single word I said. Instead, he screamed hysterically behind me, "Why did you have a change of heart? There was nothing between me and Carmen…"

My lips curved into a mocking smile. Did he not know that Carmen came to me a few days ago? She was so smug when she flaunted a prenatal report at me.

"Look at this, Maeve!

  • Reboot My Heart   Chapter 7

Austin exclaimed, "Impossible! You're just doing this out of spite, aren't you? I know you get jealous all the time, and I get it. I'm sorry for what I did—"Before Austin could step closer to me, Richard shielded me and warned, "Please mind your actions, sir."A punch came flying from Austin's direction. "Who do you think you are, meddling between us? Maeve is the most loyal person I know. She's never even looked at other men all these years!"So, what did you do to her? Did you put a spell on her or something?"His punches were messy and desperate. Richard easily dodged them, then twisted around and caught his wrist in one smooth motion. "Violence is never the solution."Austin gasped from the pain, his face pale. Richard took my hand, and eventually, we left the bridal boutique together. I never saw Austin again. At last, I embraced a life free from chaos and turmoil. As my wedding day approached, I felt that I owed Richard the truth."About what happened that day in the bri

My ex-colleague said, "Get over yourself. Just know that the thought of you is enough to repulse Maeve. Besides, she's moved back home for a blind date. So, save yourself the humiliation and stop pestering her."If I were her, I would've ditched a bastard like you long ago. Maeve's too kind for you!"Surprisingly, Austin took the mockery uncharacteristically quietly, without refuting a single word. It was only when he heard the phrase "blind date" that he suddenly raised his voice. "What? How could she go on a blind date?"By then, my ex-colleague had ended the call. When she recounted their conversation to me, I simply laughed it off. "Just ignore him. Tell you what, we'll meet again when I get married."Richard took me to all kinds of places—five-star restaurants, art galleries, and even a snowboard centre. As time went on, our bond quietly deepened.Back home, my memories of Austin began to fade. On the rare occasions he crossed my mind, I realized that there was no longer pain

  • Reboot My Heart   Chapter 5

"My darling…" Carmen uttered as she boldly linked her arm through Austin's in front of the guests. "Enough about Maeve. She's agreed to let me take her place. Today is our wedding day."Austin's expression twisted grotesquely before he flung her away. "What kind of delusion are you on about? I'm marrying Maeve, not you! You thought I'd just marry anyone? Get the hell out of here!"Austin's uncharacteristic slip in composure startled Carmen. He was usually indulgent toward her, showering her with affection and gentleness. Now, he was asking her to scram?Under the watchful eyes of the guests, her face turned from pale to livid. "What makes you think you can do this to me, Austin? I didn't see you telling me to leave when you were trying to screw me!"Sorry to burst your bubble, but your fiancee has dumped you. Maeve doesn't want you anymore, and I was the only one willing to marry you. And you dared to tell me to leave?"The guests had been whispering ever since they realized the b

  • Reboot My Heart   Chapter 4

I opened my suitcase and packed only a few essential clothes. I'd write the rest off as casualties of this relationship.I stood before the full-length mirror and studied my reflection. Although I didn't have Carmen's perfect figure, I was still well-proportioned.I suddenly recalled all the years I gave up on my favorite foods just to please Austin. I ate salads every day, clocked in gym sessions, and felt ecstatic whenever the scale showed a lower number. How pathetic had I been? If the woman he admired was Carmen, then so be it.Night soon fell. I finished dinner alone and scrolled through short videos for a while before getting ready for bed. Suddenly, thunder cracked outside, and heavy rain began to pour.I remembered how every time it rained in the last six years, I would worry about Austin.Even though he had a chauffeur and a secretary at his office, completely sheltered from the storm, I would still insist on taking a cab across the city just to bring him an umbrella.H

  • Reboot My Heart   Chapter 3

I had the inexplicable urge to try the restaurant's signature spicy barbecue ribs. For the past six years, Austin claimed to have a sensitive stomach and never ate anything spicy. Any time he saw me eating spicy food, he would wrinkle his nose in disgust."It's so embarrassing to be gobbling up heavy-flavored food like this."It wasn't just about his own preferences. He tried to control mine, too. The moment I ordered anything relatively spicy, he would lash out right there at the table. To keep the peace, I gradually changed my diet and even gave up on my favorite spicy barbecue ribs. Looking back now, I realized how foolish I was to have put myself through that.Just as I was about to taste my first rib in ages, a hand suddenly reached over and flipped the plate over.Austin had stood beside me at one point, his face full of disgust. "Why'd you eat something like that? The wedding's coming soon. Can't you watch your manners a little?"I stared at the sauce that had splattered
