Chapter 62 — What Cedar Draw Gains

Hallie put the young Alpha’s offer out of the room before the meeting began. Not because it had stopped mattering. Because it did.

That was why it could not be allowed near the agreement. She sat with the latest draft and read it as if the man across the table had never told her he would want her as his wife if she were free.

Grant sat to her left. The visiting Alpha sat opposite them.

Neither man mentioned anything personal. Good. Hallie turned to the section they had rebuilt around functional responsibility.

“We solved who can approve a change,” she said. “We didn’t solve what happens while approval is pending.”

The young Alpha looked down at the page. Grant did too. Hallie tapped the paragraph.

“If one side asks to alter an existing commitment and the named contacts can’t approve it inside their limits, it goes back to the two Alphas.”

“Yes,” Grant said.

“And until then?”

The visitor’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“The change is not binding.”

“I know. I’m asking about the work already underway.”

Silence settled over the table. This was no longer about translating Cedar Draw into language another pack could understand. It was a hole in the agreement itself.

“If Cedar Draw has already committed people and work under the last accepted terms, a pending correction can’t automatically stop everything.”

The young Alpha leaned back.

“That could leave my pack bound to terms we’re trying to change.”

“Only to terms you already accepted.”

“Which may no longer be workable.”

“Then the question is who carries the cost while the two sides verify that.”

Grant’s attention sharpened. Hallie looked at him.

“If every disputed change freezes the work, Cedar Draw carries most of that cost. We lose time and labor even when we followed the agreement as written.”

Grant nodded once.

“That’s a problem.”

The young Alpha picked up his pen.

“What are you proposing?”

“The last accepted terms stay in force for work already underway,” Hallie said. “No new obligation gets added while the correction is pending.”

The visitor’s pen stopped. “So neither side can use the delay to expand what the other already accepted.”

“Right.”

He considered.

The young Alpha found the real weakness. “What if continuing under the old terms makes the problem worse?”

Hallie paused.

“Then the people responsible can pause it together. One side doesn’t get to stop the work alone.”

Grant added, “If they can’t agree, the last accepted terms hold until it reaches us.”

“That favors Cedar Draw.”

“It protects work already committed,” Hallie said. “Your side gets the same protection when the situation is reversed.”

He considered, then nodded. “Reciprocal language.”

He tapped the pen against the page once. Hallie waited for the easy bargaining move: a concession elsewhere, another private conversation, some use of political leverage made possible because he knew she respected him. He did none of those things.

The young Alpha wanted the protection defined narrowly enough that neither side could manufacture work after a dispute began.

Hallie agreed. Grant cut a sentence that tried to solve too many cases at once.

They argued over two phrases, then stopped.

The result was simple: work genuinely underway could continue under the last accepted terms, but neither side could create new obligations while the dispute was being reviewed.

Hallie read it aloud.

Grant said, “I accept it.”

The young Alpha took another moment. Then he nodded.

“So do I.”

Hallie marked the clause complete. Something inside her eased. This was what Cedar Draw gained.

Not a title outsiders recognized. Not the broader flexibility they had refused to purchase by pretending Cedar Draw used a traditional hierarchy.

Protection against losing work every time a necessary correction climbed back up for confirmation. A practical advantage negotiated without surrendering the structure beneath it. The young Alpha closed his pen.

“For clarity, my answer would be the same if you hadn’t drawn a personal boundary with me.”

Hallie looked up. He held her gaze only long enough to make the point. Then he looked back at the draft.

“I don’t want you wondering whether I accepted that clause to please you.”

Hallie’s respect for him rose, inconveniently and unmistakably. He had every reason to use the personal tension between them as leverage and had refused the opening. That made him more difficult to dismiss, not less.

“I wasn’t going to ask.”

“I know.”

Grant remained quiet. No challenge followed. The young Alpha simply returned to the agreement. Hallie was aware of Grant beside her anyway. He had heard the compliment and the clean line the young Alpha had drawn. Grant did not make her manage his reaction. The restraint carried weight because she knew by now that he was not indifferent.

The young Alpha returned to the draft. “One final review, then.”

Grant checked the remaining marks. Hallie did the same.

Nothing structural was left open.

They had reached that point by keeping rank separate from responsibility and personal interest separate from political leverage.

Hallie stacked Cedar Draw’s copy. One more review, and the part she had helped win would stand on its own.

And Hallie would know the concession existed because the argument made sense, not because the man across the table wanted her.
