Hallie woke before Grant and stayed still for several seconds.

His arm was heavy across her waist. The room was still gray with early light, quiet enough that she could hear his breathing and the faint sounds of Cedar Draw waking beyond the walls.

Nothing about the morning looked different. That felt important.

Hallie’s name had gained no title overnight. Grant was no easier for other packs to understand, and the mate bond with Austin still existed as a distant pull she could not erase simply because she had chosen something else.

And the man beside her was still the man she had chosen. Hallie shifted carefully. Grant’s eyes opened.

“You can move,” he said, voice rough with sleep.

“I was trying not to wake you.”

“Failed.”

She smiled. His arm loosened immediately. Hallie noticed that too.

Even now, after the night they had shared, he did not assume closeness gave him ownership of the next moment. She stayed anyway. A knock sounded from the outer room later, after they had dressed and separated enough to make the day ordinary again.

Caleb was waiting with one of the copied contact sheets.

“The acknowledgment came through.”

Hallie took it.

The visiting pack had confirmed Cedar Draw’s designated contacts exactly as agreed, without adding titles, demanding a permanent second, or reinterpreting the terms after their Alpha left.

Hallie read the page twice.

“So it’s active,” she said.

“Looks that way.”

Grant glanced over her shoulder.

“The first review still happens on schedule.”

Caleb nodded.

“And if something breaks before then, we use the process we wrote.”

Hallie handed the page back. That should have felt like a small administrative detail. Instead, satisfaction moved through her.

The young Alpha had left. His offer had ended with him. The cooperation had not.

Cedar Draw had kept the part that mattered to the pack without carrying the romantic complication into the next negotiation or disguising a private promise as diplomacy.

What remained was an agreement between two packs. Hallie stepped outside with Grant, and the yard was already busy.

Someone called a question toward Caleb while another person crossed between buildings carrying a list Hallie had helped revise days ago. Everyone kept moving without announcing that Hallie had become anything new.

She had not. That, too, felt right. A woman near the work board asked Hallie whether one of the new contact limits applied to a timing change.

Hallie answered. The woman nodded and went back to what she was doing, leaving the Luna title absent.

There was no ceremony, only work people trusted Hallie to understand. She looked toward Grant.

He was speaking to someone near the stores entrance, too large and too severe-looking for the easy image other packs preferred in a husband. Nothing about him had become more socially convenient because Hallie had chosen him. He was still older.

Still Alpha of a pack many outsiders did not know how to categorize. Still a man people would measure against younger, cleaner possibilities and decide he made less sense on paper. Hallie understood why.

That was the difference now. She no longer needed to prove those people wrong about the paper. The young Alpha had been a good choice.

Maybe a better one by every standard Hallie had been raised to respect.

He had been close to her age. Politically legible. Personally decent. Capable of giving her a recognized Luna role without asking the world to learn new language first.

Hallie had not discovered some hidden flaw that made refusing him easy. She had refused him because being a valid alternative did not make him the man she wanted. Grant looked up and caught her watching.

He crossed the yard.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“That usually means something.”

Hallie looked at him for another second. Months ago, she had chosen Grant because he offered a line Bellamy Creek could not cross. Protection had mattered.

It still mattered. But protection could explain only the beginning. It could not explain why she had stayed when Cedar Draw became hers through work instead of refuge.

It could not explain why she had cared when Grant stepped away out of jealousy. It could not explain why she had needed him to understand that leaving would cost her something. It could not explain last night.

Grant left the silence open. Hallie reached for his hand for herself rather than for anyone watching.

The people who mattered to that choice were already there. His fingers closed around hers.

“I was thinking you’re still the wrong man on paper.”

One eyebrow lifted.

“Comforting.”

Hallie smiled.

“You are.”

Grant looked down at their joined hands.

“And you’re telling me this because?”

“Because I don’t care.”

His gaze returned to hers. Hallie corrected herself.

“No. That’s not true.”

Grant stayed quiet.

“I care that the world finds you hard to explain. Sometimes that makes things harder for me too.”

“I know.”

“I care that another life could have been easier in ways this one isn’t.”

Grant’s thumb moved once against her hand. Hallie continued.

“But I don’t need you to become better on paper so I can defend choosing you.”

Something in his face went still. Hallie stepped closer.

“I knew what the other choice was.”

“Yes.”

“I knew what he could offer.”

“Yes.”

“And I chose you.”

Grant did not answer immediately. He had become better at accepting the sentence without arguing against it.

Finally he said, “I’m trying not to make that sound like a victory.”

“It isn’t.”

“I know.”

Hallie squeezed his hand.

“It’s a choice.”

Grant nodded. Around them, Cedar Draw kept moving.

The new agreement would need work. Outsiders would keep misunderstanding the pack. Hallie would still have to earn some forms of recognition instead of receiving them through a title.

None of that had changed. What had changed was simpler. Grant was no longer only the man Hallie had married because she needed protection from the future someone else had chosen for her.

He was the husband she had chosen again when another future stood open in front of her. The world could offer her men who were easier to explain. That did not mean they were the men she wanted.

By nightfall, Cedar Draw felt like itself again. The visiting party was gone. The signed agreement had been put away where Caleb could find it tomorrow. Someone had already complained about a stores count, someone else had left muddy boots where they did not belong, and dinner had ended with three separate arguments that had nothing to do with politics.Hallie had missed ordinary problems. She finished helping clear the long table and looked toward the corridor. Grant had disappeared sometime after the meal. Not avoiding her. She knew the difference now. Hallie found him in his room with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, folding a shirt that had no reason to require that much attention. She leaned against the doorframe.“You know that’s already folded.”Grant looked down at it.“So it is.”Hallie smiled. The first page of the report concerned the agreement. Austin read it carefully.Cedar Draw and the visiting pack had signed. The arrangement recognized responsibility by function instead of forcing Cedar Draw into traditional ranks. There were limits for temporary contacts, a review process for disputed changes, and protections for work already underway.Useful. Orderly. The kind of political result Austin would normally have studied for weaknesses before deciding whether it mattered to Bellamy Creek. He turned the page. The next lines stopped him. The young Alpha’s interest in Hallie had been real. Not rumor. Not the easy speculation people made whenever an unmarried Alpha spoke too often to an attractive woman. He had wanted her as his wife if she were ever free to choose. He had been willing to make her Luna. Austin read the paragraph again. His hand tightened on the paper. The mate bond pulled beneath his ribs, immediate and famili

Hallie had expected certainty to feel cleaner. It did not.The visiting party was gone. The agreement remained. Cedar Draw had returned to its ordinary noise, as if several days of negotiation and one impossible alternative had not rearranged anything inside her.By evening, Hallie found Grant in the common room with the signed copy open on his knee. He looked up when she approached.“Checking it again?”“Once.”“You’ve said that before.”“Then this is the last once.”Hallie sat beside him. There was enough space on the bench that she did not need to touch him. She did anyway. Her shoulder settled against his upper arm first. Then, after a moment, she let herself lean until part of her weight rested on him.Grant went still. Not tense. Careful.Hallie looked at the agreement instead of his face.“I meant what I told him.”Grant did not

Grant knew Hallie had made a choice before she told him what it was.She had crossed the yard after speaking to the young Alpha and taken Grant’s hand without hesitation. She had stayed beside him while the visiting party prepared to leave. That could have meant several things. Grant refused to decide which one. He waited until they were away from the others.Hallie found him near the common room after the last travel arrangements had been settled. The young Alpha’s people were still in Cedar Draw, but most of their things had already been carried out.Grant looked at her.“You don’t have to tell me anything before you’re ready.”“I know.”She stopped in front of him.“I told him no.”Relief hit so fast Grant almost hated it.It loosened something in his chest before he could stop it. Beneath that came satisfaction, warmer and sharper.Hallie had b

Hallie found him before the visiting party was ready to leave.People were already carrying the last of their things across the yard. The signed agreement had been packed with the other papers. Nothing political remained unfinished between the two packs. One thing remained. The young Alpha saw her coming and stepped away from the others without taking her anywhere private, a choice Hallie appreciated.“You said you would answer me,” he said.“I did.”He waited. Hallie had spent most of the night trying to find a version that would be kind without being false. There wasn’t one.So she started with the truth that made the answer hardest.“You are a good choice.”His expression did not change.“You’re respected. You listen. You don’t need me to explain why the work I was trained for matters. With you, I could walk into a role everyone already understands.”
