The gate closed with a sound like a coffin lid.

Sera Vale slammed both palms against the steel. The cold burned straight through her gloves. Nineteen days of blizzard had swallowed the city whole, and the shelter on the other side of that gate was the last warm place left alive.

"Damian." Her voice cracked apart. "Damian, please."

Through the narrow security window she could see him. Her husband of six years, wearing the wool coat she had saved three months of overtime to buy him. One arm was around Celeste, the adopted sister who had shared Sera's bedroom since they were nine. His other hand held Leo, Celeste's five-year-old son. Behind them, Margaret Cross, his mother, clutched her white poodle inside her fur collar like a crown jewel.

Four people. A dog. One seat left on the guard's manifest.

Sera had dragged the generator through the ice for them. She had fed them from her own rations for nineteen days. She had given Margaret her sleeping bag and Damian the last of the antibiotics meant for her own infected leg.

"The system only allows one more," the guard said, not unkindly. "Family decides."

Damian did not look at her. He looked at Celeste's trembling shoulders. At the boy.

"Take Celeste," he said.

Something inside Sera simply stopped.

"And my mother's dog," Margaret added. "Duchess is sensitive."

The dog. They had chosen the dog over her.

"I'll come back for you," Damian said to the window, to the air beside her face. "Sera, you're strong. You always manage."

She always managed. That was the whole of her purpose, wasn't it? To manage until she was used up.

The gate locked. The lights inside glowed gold. She slid down the steel with the wind tearing at her, her fingers already going black.

Then Celeste leaned back toward the window slit, just far enough, and smiled. It was a small, soft, relieved smile.

"You never read the letters, did you?" Celeste whispered. "Your parents' trust. It released years ago. Damian's lawyer has been burning every notice that came to the house." She tilted her head. "And Leo has Damian's eyes. Haven't you noticed? Everyone else did."

The ice reached her lungs.

Six years. The fortune. The child.

Every sacrifice, a thing they were stealing.

The last thing Sera Vale felt before the white swallowed her was not grief.

It was rage.

She woke up gasping.

Heat. That was the first impossible thing. Heat on her hands, steaming water, a sink full of greasy dishes. Her fingers were pink and whole and alive.

"Sera! Are you deaf as well as slow?"

Margaret Cross's voice cut through her like a blade.

Sera turned her head slowly. The kitchen was the old kitchen, the one in the Cross family house before everything burned. Yellow light. Dinner smells. Margaret in the doorway in her silk blouse, pearls at her throat, Duchess squirming in her arms. Alive. Warm. Perfectly fed.

"The guests are here," Margaret hissed. "Celeste brought the boy, and you're in here daydreaming. Dry your hands. Wear the grey dress. And smile. You always look like a funeral."

A funeral. Sera almost laughed.

Her phone sat on the counter, screen lit by a notification. She picked it up with wet, shaking fingers.

Friday. Family Dinner, 7:00 PM.

The date beneath it was one she had buried in the deepest vault of her mind. She counted forward on the calendar, and her stomach turned to ice.

Sixty days. She knew the exact date the sky would go dark. She had lived through it once already.

The air in front of her eyes rippled.

A translucent panel unfolded in cold blue light, edged in clean geometric lines, hovering over the steaming sink like something out of a nightmare — or a prayer.

Failure is not an option.

Sera did not scream. She did not cry. She stood very still, water dripping from her fingertips onto the tiles, and read the words three times.

Reborn.

The knowledge came down on her like a cold hand pressing her spine straight. She knew what was coming. The first storms. The collapsing power grid. The supermarkets stripped bare in four days. The long white winter that would bury the city and every promise made in it.

And she knew who was waiting in the dining room.

"Sera!" Margaret snapped again. "Are you listening? Move."

In her last life, Sera would have said, Yes, Mother. Sorry, Mother.

She dried her hands, one finger at a time, and walked out of the kitchen without a word.

The dining room was exactly as she remembered. The long mahogany table. The chandelier she had polished every Sunday for six years. Damian Cross at the head of it, handsome and bored, loosening his cufflinks as if the house belonged to him and she belonged to the house.

And beside him, one hand resting lightly on his sleeve: Celeste. Soft curls, pale pink dress, a face made for sympathy. Leo played with a toy car under the table.

Leo has Damian's eyes.

Sera looked at the child. She had never truly looked before. Now it was impossible to unsee. The same dark brows. The same set to the jaw.

Something in her chest cracked cleanly in half, and the crack did not hurt. It felt like a lock clicking open.

"There you are," Damian said without looking up. "Sit. We have news."

She did not sit.

"Celeste's lease ended," he continued, in the tone he used for weather reports. "She and Leo will be staying with us for a while. We'll move you into the guest room. Celeste needs the master bedroom for the boy. Better light."

Celeste lowered her eyes with perfect, practiced modesty. "I told him not to ask you, Sera. I know it's a lot."

In her last life, Sera had apologized for being inconvenient.

"And I need you to wire the money," Damian added, finally glancing up. "Your savings. Celeste is opening a boutique, and I told her you'd cover the deposit. Three hundred thousand. You're not using it for anything anyway."

Margaret slid into her chair with a satisfied rustle. "It's the least you can do, dear. Family is sacrifice. And you've always been so good at sacrificing."

Four faces. Four hands out, palms up, waiting to be filled.

Sera felt, very distinctly, the blizzard in her bones.

Her savings were meant for warehouses. Fuel. Medicine. A fortified house with reinforced glass and a basement that could hold water for a year. They were not three hundred thousand for a boutique. They were the first bricks of a wall that would keep her alive.

"No," she said.

The word dropped into the room like breaking glass.

Damian blinked. "Excuse me?"

"No." She said it again, quieter, and it felt like stepping onto solid ground. "I won't wire the money. I won't move into the guest room. I won't smile."

Margaret's fork clattered. "How dare you speak to my son in that tone after everything he has done for you?"

"Sera," Damian said, low and warning, the way a man speaks to a dog that has bitten once. "You're upset. Sit down and we'll discuss this like adults."

"I did discuss it. For six years." She walked around the end of the table and stopped beside him. Close enough to smell his cologne — the cologne she had picked. "And at the end of it I was left outside the gate to freeze, while you chose the dog."

A beat of silence. Confusion rippled across every face.

"What gate?" Celeste asked, her smile faltering for the first time. "What are you talking about?"

A small, cold smile touched Sera's mouth. For the first time in her life, she was the only person in the room who knew what was going to happen.

It was the most powerful feeling she had ever had.

She put both hands flat on the polished table and leaned toward her husband.

"I want a divorce."

The chandelier hummed in the stunned quiet.

Damian's face went slowly white, then red.

[Liability detected: Damian Cross. Marital status: ACTIVE.]

[Reward: 500 Survival Points + Basic Storage Space (10m³)]

"What did you just say to me?"

Sera smiled. It was the first real smile she had worn in six years.

The mountain groaned again, and this time the lightbulb swung on its cord.Dust rained from the vault ceiling. Sera grabbed the edge of the steel table. The door opened without a knock.Damian Cross walked in wearing the face of a heartbroken husband. The tragic eyes. The gentle frown. The slightly rumpled collar, as if he hadn't slept. Sera knew every muscle of that performance. She had been its only audience for six years.Behind him came Gregory Pruitt — silver-haired, charcoal suit, a slim leather briefcase, and a smile like a closed drawer."Sera." Damian crossed the room in three steps, hands out. "Thank God. We've been so worried."She did not move. "Sit down, Damian.""You left in the middle of the night. My mother hasn't stopped crying." He lowered his voice, as if confiding in the room. "Mr. Whitmore, forgive the intrusion. My wife hasn't been herself for weeks. Episodes. Paranoia. Delusions about the family."There it is.In her last life, Sera had only been called crazy after the world ended. Damian had simply started earlier."Mrs. Cross is unwell," Pruitt said smoothly, setting his briefcase on Whitmore's desk. "We have

Damian Cross did not look heartbroken. He looked offended."You want a divorce." He said it slowly, like a man tasting spoiled milk. Then he laughed — short, cold, dismissive. "Sit down, Sera. You've had a long day.""I've had a long life.""Don't be dramatic." He pushed his chair back and rose to his full height, the way he always did when he wanted to be taller than the conversation. "Where would you even go? You have no family. No friends who can afford to feed you. You haven't worked since I asked you to quit. Everything you own, I gave you."Sera almost admired it. Six years, and he still honestly believed that.Margaret slapped her napkin on the table. "She's testing us, Damian. She'll be crying and begging by morning. Let her go sulk.""Of course she will," Celeste murmured, eyes wide and sorrowful. "Sera, you're not thinking clearly. We're your family."Sera looked at her and felt nothing at all.It was the calmest she had ever been."I'm going to get my things," she said. The
