Damian Cross did not look heartbroken.

He looked offended.

"You want a divorce." He said it slowly, like a man tasting spoiled milk. Then he laughed — short, cold, dismissive. "Sit down, Sera. You've had a long day."

"I've had a long life."

"Don't be dramatic." He pushed his chair back and rose to his full height, the way he always did when he wanted to be taller than the conversation. "Where would you even go? You have no family. No friends who can afford to feed you. You haven't worked since I asked you to quit. Everything you own, I gave you."

Sera almost admired it. Six years, and he still honestly believed that.

Margaret slapped her napkin on the table. "She's testing us, Damian. She'll be crying and begging by morning. Let her go sulk."

"Of course she will," Celeste murmured, eyes wide and sorrowful. "Sera, you're not thinking clearly. We're your family."

Sera looked at her and felt nothing at all.

It was the calmest she had ever been.

"I'm going to get my things," she said.

The blue panel hovered at the corner of her vision as she climbed the stairs.

[Countdown: 59 Days, 23 Hours]

[Ability Unlocked: SPATIAL STORAGE (Level 1)]

[Capacity: 1 cubic meter]

[Activation: Touch. Think "store."]

Sera closed the bedroom door and leaned against it. Her hands were shaking. Finally. Her body remembered what her mind had been refusing to feel.

Not yet. Cry later. Move.

She pulled her mother's silver locket from the dresser drawer and pressed her palm against it.

Store.

It vanished.

No flash. No sound. Just a faint pull behind her eyes, and a small glowing grid in the panel showing a single item: Locket (Silver, 1). She thought retrieve, and it dropped into her hand — warm, as if it had never left.

Sera laughed. One breath, almost a sob.

So that was her weapon. Not a sword. Not superhuman strength. A pocket the size of a closet, and sixty days.

It would have to be enough.

She worked fast. Passport. Birth certificate. Her laptop. The three bankbooks Damian thought she had forgotten. A winter coat, boots, thermal layers. Everything slid out of sight with a quiet pull. Within eight minutes she was holding a single small handbag and wearing the plainest outfit she owned.

When she opened the door, Damian was standing in the hall.

"We're not done talking."

"We are."

"You don't leave this house unless I say so." He caught her wrist. It was not a hard grip — it was a certain one. The grip of a man handling something that had always obeyed. "I'm trying to be patient. Tell me what this is really about. Money? A man?"

A man. Of course. It was the only reason a woman like her could possibly have for leaving.

Sera glanced to the left. Across the street, a security camera blinked red on the neighbor's porch. Pointed squarely at the front door.

"Let go," she said pleasantly, "or I'll walk outside and tell the whole street you put your hands on me. The Hendersons have a camera. Their son posts everything online."

His fingers twitched.

"Let. Go."

He let go.

She walked down the stairs — past Margaret's fury, past Celeste's quivering lip, past the wedding photo she had hung with her own hands. She did not look back at it.

At the door, she paused.

"One more thing, Damian. Your lawyer's been very busy burning my mail. Tell Mr. Pruitt I know."

Every drop of color drained from his face.

She stepped into the dark and closed the door on the Cross family, and it was the sweetest sound she had ever heard.

She paid cash for a motel room near the airport and gave a false name at the desk. It was the first careful thing she had done in years. She slept with the lights on and the chair wedged under the doorknob.

At dawn, the blue panel woke her.

Sera sat up. Her mind was clear as glass. In her last life, she had been dead for weeks before she understood the truth. This time she had the order of things etched into her bones.

Parents' trust. Twenty-eight. Burned notices.

Her parents had died in a car crash when she was nineteen. She had been taken in by the Cross family — her father's old business partners, the same people who had arranged her marriage to Damian "to keep her safe." She had been told the estate was small, mostly debts. She had believed it for nine years.

Celeste's whisper rang in her memory: Your parents' trust. It released years ago.

Sera dressed, swallowed a dry piece of toast, and called the one number she remembered from a funeral program she'd kept at the back of a drawer.

Whitmore & Associates.

"Mrs. Cross?" The voice on the line was elderly and astonished. "Good heavens. We have been writing to you for three years."

"It's Ms. Vale," Sera said. "And I'm coming in."

Aldous Whitmore's office occupied the twelfth floor of a glass tower downtown. It smelled of old leather and expensive tea. He was a stooped man in his seventies, with the kind of watery eyes that had seen a great deal and forgiven very little.

He did not make her wait.

"I want to apologize first," he said, taking her hands in both of his. "Your parents named me their executor. I sent registered letters. I sent three couriers. Each time, I was told you had declined."

"I never saw them."

"I know that now." His jaw tightened. "I know a great many things now."

He opened a leather folder and slid a page across his desk.

Sera read it once. Then she read it again, very slowly, because the numbers did not look real.

The Vale Family Trust. Sole beneficiary: Sera Vale.

Liquid assets: $212,400,000.

Vale Cold Logistics: fourteen temperature-controlled warehouses across three states.

Greywater Ridge: a 900-acre mountain estate with an underground aquifer, a hydroelectric dam, and a decommissioned geothermal plant.

Grain and fuel storage contracts: active.

The room swayed.

Cold warehouses. A mountain with its own water and power.

In her last life, she had died in a blizzard begging for a heated shelter. And all this time — the heat, the water, the food, the mountain — had belonged to her.

Behind her eyes, the blue panel flared.

[Resource Detected: CRITICAL]

Sera pressed her fingers to her mouth to keep from laughing.

"Mrs. Cross," Whitmore said gently, "I should tell you what is protected and what is not. This trust is entirely separate from any marital property. Under the terms your father wrote, not a cent can be claimed by a spouse — in marriage or divorce." He paused. "He was a careful man. He did not trust the Cross family. He never said why."

He knew, Sera thought. Dad knew.

Her throat burned.

"Who else has tried to access it?"

Whitmore's expression changed. It was the face of a man who had been waiting a very long time to say something out loud.

"Four months ago, someone presented a power of attorney bearing your signature. A forgery — and not even a good one. I refused it." He tapped the folder. "The notarizing attorney was a Mr. Gregory Pruitt. Of Pruitt & Hale."

"Damian's lawyer."

"I believe so, yes."

Sera sat very still.

Her husband had not been taking her for granted.

He had been planning. For years. He'd married her to wait for a clock to run out, and he'd watched her scrub his kitchen floors while he did it.

"Mr. Whitmore," she said, and her voice was something new and very quiet. "I need three things today. File my divorce. Lock down every account and property. And begin liquidating certain assets — quietly, immediately — before anyone knows I'm alive."

"Liquidating?" His eyebrows rose. "Ms. Vale, the trust is valuable because it's intact."

"Not for much longer." She met his eyes. "Please, Mr. Whitmore. Trust me. Just this once."

The old lawyer studied her for a long moment.

Whatever he saw in her face made him sit up straighter.

"Your father would have liked you," he said at last.

He reached for his pen.

Then the intercom buzzed.

"Mr. Whitmore?" His secretary's voice was tight. "I'm so sorry to interrupt. There's a gentleman here without an appointment. He says he's Mrs. Cross's husband. And he's brought his attorney."

Whitmore's pen stopped.

Sera felt the blue panel pulse once, like a heartbeat.

[WARNING: Hostile party approaching]

[Liability: Damian Cross]

[He already knows where you are]

She hadn't told anyone.

Through the frosted glass of the office door, two tall shadows were moving closer.

The mountain groaned again, and this time the lightbulb swung on its cord.Dust rained from the vault ceiling. Sera grabbed the edge of the steel table. Gideon was already moving — one hand on his radio, the other on the pistol at his hip, his whole body turned toward the corridor like a compass needle finding north."That wasn't an earthquake," he said."No." Her voice came out thin. The door opened without a knock.Damian Cross walked in wearing the face of a heartbroken husband. The tragic eyes. The gentle frown. The slightly rumpled collar, as if he hadn't slept. Sera knew every muscle of that performance. She had been its only audience for six years.Behind him came Gregory Pruitt — silver-haired, charcoal suit, a slim leather briefcase, and a smile like a closed drawer."Sera." Damian crossed the room in three steps, hands out. "Thank God. We've been so worried."She did not move. "Sit down, Damian.""You left in the middle of the night. My mother hasn't stopped crying." He lowered his voice, as if confiding in the room. "Mr. Whitmore, forgive the intrusion. My wife hasn't been herself for weeks. Episodes. Paranoia. Delusions about the family."There it is.In her last life, Sera had only been called crazy after the world ended. Damian had simply started earlier."Mrs. Cross is unwell," Pruitt said smoothly, setting his briefcase on Whitmore's desk. "We have

The gate closed with a sound like a coffin lid.Sera Vale slammed both palms against the steel. The cold burned straight through her gloves. Nineteen days of blizzard had swallowed the city whole, and the shelter on the other side of that gate was the last warm place left alive."Damian." Her voice cracked apart. "Damian, please."Through the narrow security window she could see him. Her husband of six years, wearing the wool coat she had saved three months of overtime to buy him.
