Chapter 3

Author: Tons of Gold
Caleb opened the cellar door. Dim light spilled in from outside, falling on me as I curled up in the corner. I had gone a day without water or light. My lips were cracked, and my face was as pale as a sheet. Even my breathing was faint and weak.

He froze at the doorway, eyes widening when he saw me. "Nala!"

He hurried over. His fingers hovered by my cheek, wanting to touch me but stopping halfway, as if he were afraid I would shatter at the slightest contact. "How did you end up like this? I only wanted you to calm down…"

Only then did Pam's words come back to him. I had severe claustrophobia.

Two years ago, his business rival crushed him, kidnapping me to force him out of a bid. They locked me in a pitch-dark container for three whole days. That was when I became afraid of the dark.

Now, Caleb had pushed me into the abyss with his own hands.

"Nala, I…"

His voice trembled, and he was so ready to pull me into his arms until Sadie walked in.

"How strange. I checked the surveillance, and she seemed fine all day. How did she end up like this all of a sudden?" she mused.

Caleb stiffened, then turned to look at her before lowering his gaze back to me. Slowly, his expression darkened. He straightened up, suspicion creeping into his voice. "You were faking it?"

Sadie pretended to be shocked. "Wow. As expected from someone who's received higher education. No wonder she used to be an actress…"

She paused, then glanced at him. Seeing how gloomy he looked, she added fuel to the fire. "Mr. Ingram, don't blame her. She probably just wanted you to worry about her. She didn't have a choice."

His face twisted, hesitation completely wiped away by her words. He drew a deep breath and turned toward the door. "Take her out. Mr. Stone Senior's people are waiting outside with their car."

The bodyguards quickly stepped forward and hoisted me off the floor. I didn't even have the strength to stand on my own, so I let them drag me outside. Caleb didn't want to see me and went straight upstairs.

Then, out of nowhere, Sadie came over with a bottle of liquid. "Her lips are all cracked. She needs to drink something!"

With that, she twisted the cap off and barked orders for someone to pour the liquid into my mouth without mercy. The sharp taste burned my throat. I choked, tears streaming down my face, but she kept forcing me to drink until every drop was gone.

Meanwhile, Walter's assistant, Avery Jones, had been waiting outside for a long time.

When he saw me walking over, pale and weak, he instantly panicked. In a few quick steps, he hurried over and respectfully took me from the bodyguards. "Ms. Brown, are you okay?"

I shook my head, about to get into the car, but Sadie suddenly grabbed me. She leaned close, whispering in a volume only both of us could hear. "Don't worry, Nala. If you die at Mr. Stone Senior's villa, I'll make sure someone handles your body for you."

Her smile was bright. "As for the three of us, we'll live happily ever after."

With that, she shoved a signed divorce agreement into my arms. "He didn't want to divorce you at first because he felt guilty, but I told him I didn't want to be a hidden mistress. I want to be his legal wife, the mother of our child. So, he signed the agreement almost immediately."

She even touched my belly. "You couldn't even keep a man's heart with this, Nala. How pathetic."

Holding that divorce agreement, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. For the first time, I genuinely felt grateful to her.

"Thanks."

The luxury car pulled away from the Ingram residence. I rolled down the window and looked at Sadie's smug face in the rearview mirror, a smirk tugging at my lips.

The show was just getting started.

Under Walter's repeated persuasion, I eventually moved into the Stone residence. At first, Andrew still called me "Nally". But at some point, without me realizing, he started inventing all kinds of nicknames for me—Nana, Nal, Nala-bear… It got to the point where I started wondering if he had been possessed by something. Then, one night, when he pinned me against a corner and called me "babe", sparks flew. He murmured, his throat dry and tight, "Nally, give me a hand…"I blushed deeply and looked up at him, my eyes wide with a mix of panic and curiosity. "How?"He lifted me onto the bed, holding me around the waist. At first, he took the lead, but as time passed, I rolled on top of him. Soon, we were like two restless beasts, each move pushing the other further all the way until dawn. After a night of warmth, I buried my flushed face in the covers, too shy to look at him. Andrew leaned against the headboard, calm and teasing. "I hope this isn't a one-night stand, Nana."I peeked

The guests looked at one another in shock.Caleb panicked. "You're lying! Even if the startup capital came from you, I've been running the company all these years. I'm the legal representative. How could the company be yours?"Seeing how clueless he was, I couldn't help laughing. "You're right. You did run the company. You've worked hard all these years. But the investment records are clear, Caleb. One check, and the truth will come out. I'm not lying."I continued, "I never interfered with how you spent money over the years, but those shares, properties, and company holdings are all under my name. If we really want to be precise, even this wedding might've been paid for with my money.""Bullshit!"Caleb lunged toward me, ready to strike, but Avery stepped in and blocked him. He gripped his wrist and asked, "Everyone's watching, including the police. Are you sure you're going to assault someone here, Mr. Ingram?"Caleb's expression darkened and mottled with rage, but he didn't da

"I certainly misunderstood your grandpa," I said, smiling awkwardly. What a huge misunderstanding."Andrew, please thank your grandpa for me—""Why not thank me in person?"Walter's voice suddenly rang out. I jumped, having no idea when he had come in. I looked at Walter nervously, then quickly lowered my head. "Mr. Stone Senior, I don't know where to begin—"I was just about to sit up when a broad hand pressed me gently back onto the bed. "Lie down. You saved Andrew, so that makes you a benefactor of the Stone family. This is nothing—we're even."Walter's gaze shifted to the cup of water beside me. He tested the temperature, then frowned. "Bring another cup and make sure it's warm."Faced with his concern, I was so moved that I didn't know what to say. When the water was brought over, Andrew immediately stood up and reached for it. "I'll do it. You should get some rest, Avery."Walter watched the two of us back and forth, a smile slowly forming. He suddenly asked, "Nala, wha

Andrew? Why was he here? I had to be dreaming. When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was a ridiculously handsome face staring at me from inches away. The next second, he pulled me into a tight hug. "You're finally awake!""Andrew? Is that you?" I asked. When I was studying film, I once attended a charity gala with my mentor and ended up helping an injured man. He said he was being targeted by bad people and had nowhere to go, so out of kindness, I let him stay with me for a month. Then, one day, he took off. All he left behind was a note that said, "I'm going home, Nally. If you ever need help, call this number."Andrew nervously gripped my hand. "You know, after I went home, I'd been wanting to see you again. But Grandpa was worried I'd be targeted again, so he sent me abroad."He continued, "When Avery called me, I was scared out of my mind. I bought the first ticket home immediately. Do you know? You were unconscious for three days…"I moved my hands and feet. Although

One time, Caleb went three days without sleeping. I saw how haggard he looked and yanked him away from his computer, shoving him under the covers."Are you kidding me, Nala? I haven't finished the proposal!" he barked, scowling at me."I don't care if you're mad at me. You have to put up with this," I said, handing him a mug of warm milk. "I'm not leaving until you sleep."He stared at me for a long moment, then broke into a smile. "Nala… With you here, I feel like I can actually make it." Gradually, his startup began to gain traction. Meanwhile, I slowly withdrew from the acting world. My friends all said I was crazy, turning my back on a promising career just to be a housewife for a man.I didn't care about the noise. I loved Caleb, and I was willing to be the woman supporting him.Since he was too busy to take care of himself, I made a point of cooking for him every day—simmering soups, making steaks, and flamming up his favorite barbecued ribs. Each time he ate, his mouth w

Halfway through the drive, I could feel a dull ache spreading through my abdomen. Before long, it turned into searing pain. That was when it hit me—something was wrong with the liquid Sadie forced on me.I had thought she was only trying to humiliate me, but I realized then she was far more vicious than I had imagined. She was afraid that if I somehow survived and returned to the Ingram residence, the spot she had worked so hard to steal would no longer be hers.Hence, she wanted me to die on the way to Walter's place, to lose both the baby and me in one clean stroke. That way, the blame could be pinned on him, and it would have nothing to do with her. With Walter's power, who in their right mind would investigate him?At that thought, I quickly informed Avery in the front seat, "Please help me… My stomach hurts a lot…" His visage paled. "What happened to you, Ms. Brown? Mr. Stone Senior ordered me to deliver you to him in one piece!"Half an hour later, the luxury car stopped a
