Chapter 2

Author: Tons of Gold
I handed Caleb the divorce agreement, but he didn't even look at it. He tossed it aside in one sharp motion.

"Have you lost your mind, Nala? I just told you I'm not divorcing you! I know you don't want to go, but my company is on the line! You wouldn't want everything I've worked so hard for to be destroyed because of you, would you?"

I almost wanted to sigh. Caleb was really good at guilt-tripping me, wasn't he? With the way he said it, it sounded like I would be deliberately ruining his career if I refused.

Did he think I was still as easy to manipulate as I had been in my previous life? Having lived through it once already, I had long since figured out how to deal with Walter.

Faced with my silence, Caleb looked gloomy. "I'll be honest with you. Sadie's carrying my baby. As long as you help the company through this crisis, I'll let you be the child's mother in name—"

"No, thank you," I interrupted him, nudging the document on the floor with my foot. "I have no interest in being a stepmother, let alone to a bastard child."

"Nala!"

I ignored the shouting behind me and turned to go upstairs.

Pam's eyes welled up with tears as she watched me slowly pack my things. "Mrs. Ingram, are you really going to Mr. Stone Senior's place? I just don't understand. Years ago, when Mr. Ingram's parents passed, you stayed by his side day and night, helping him through the hardest time of his life.

"And now, all that loyalty and care can't compare with a gold-digger who couldn't make it abroad and came back to cling to him? He clearly said he'd only ever love you. How did he get so blinded by that wretch?"

I shook my head helplessly. "Don't call me Mrs. Ingram anymore. I'm done with this family."

Pam wiped her tears. "But if you go, it's the end of the world for you…"

My hand froze mid-motion. Even Pam believed I wouldn't make it out alive or sane. I was about to reply when a cup of cold water suddenly splashed across my face.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, Ms. Brown. I just… slipped for a second…"

It was Sadie. She was holding an empty glass, apologizing, but the look on her face was pure triumph. "By the way, I don't think you need to pack much. I'm sure Mr. Stone Senior has everything you need there… It's not like you'd be his first woman."

Pam's body trembled from the sheer rage. "How could you say that to her?"

"Pam, it's fine," I said.

Sadie thought I was just scared to argue with her. The provocation in her eyes grew more evident, her disdainful gaze slowly landing on my belly.

"I heard he knows every trick in the book. Everyone who's been to his place came out insane. I wonder how long you'll last… I'm afraid that even if you do come back, your little bastard baby will be gone."

I wiped the water from my hair and slapped Sadie across the face, shoving her out of my room. "Don't worry about that. I never planned to keep it anyway."

Just as I was about to turn around, she suddenly grabbed my arm. "What do you think Caleb will do to you if I roll down the stairs?"

She hissed the words into my ear, cruel and vicious, then toppled backward, screaming, "Help!"

Caleb's expression paled. Without a second thought, he rushed over and caught her. "Sadie, are you okay?"

She put on an act of concern. "I'm fine… Just don't blame Ms. Brown for it. She's just jealous that I'm pregnant with your child and acted on impulse…"

Her words, without surprise, made Caleb's hatred for me burn even wilder. He stormed toward me and heavily struck my face.

"You make me sick, Nala! After everything you did to her, she's still defending you. You're nothing compared to her! I'm glad you're about to be toyed with to death by that old man. You know what? I hope you die in there!"

His words were nothing short of cruel. Ultimately, he ordered the bodyguards to lock me in a tiny, pitch-black cellar. "Not a drop of water for her without my permission!"

Pam fell to her knees outside, sobbing and begging. "Mr. Ingram, you can't do this to her! You know she has claustrophobia—she's terrified of the dark! She could die…"

Caleb ignored her completely. Sadie, sitting nearby and holding her head, pretended to sound innocent while slyly stirring up trouble.

"Pam, at the end of the day, you still work for the Ingram family. Why are you always siding with Nala? What has she ever done for you to care like she was your daughter?"

Pam completely lost it. She tried to rush forward and tear Sadie apart, but the bodyguards held her back. She spent the entire night outside the cellar, crying and keeping watch over me.

It wasn't until the next evening that Walter's people came to pick me up.

Under Walter's repeated persuasion, I eventually moved into the Stone residence. At first, Andrew still called me "Nally". But at some point, without me realizing, he started inventing all kinds of nicknames for me—Nana, Nal, Nala-bear… It got to the point where I started wondering if he had been possessed by something. Then, one night, when he pinned me against a corner and called me "babe", sparks flew. He murmured, his throat dry and tight, "Nally, give me a hand…"I blushed deeply and looked up at him, my eyes wide with a mix of panic and curiosity. "How?"He lifted me onto the bed, holding me around the waist. At first, he took the lead, but as time passed, I rolled on top of him. Soon, we were like two restless beasts, each move pushing the other further all the way until dawn. After a night of warmth, I buried my flushed face in the covers, too shy to look at him. Andrew leaned against the headboard, calm and teasing. "I hope this isn't a one-night stand, Nana."I peeked

The guests looked at one another in shock.Caleb panicked. "You're lying! Even if the startup capital came from you, I've been running the company all these years. I'm the legal representative. How could the company be yours?"Seeing how clueless he was, I couldn't help laughing. "You're right. You did run the company. You've worked hard all these years. But the investment records are clear, Caleb. One check, and the truth will come out. I'm not lying."I continued, "I never interfered with how you spent money over the years, but those shares, properties, and company holdings are all under my name. If we really want to be precise, even this wedding might've been paid for with my money.""Bullshit!"Caleb lunged toward me, ready to strike, but Avery stepped in and blocked him. He gripped his wrist and asked, "Everyone's watching, including the police. Are you sure you're going to assault someone here, Mr. Ingram?"Caleb's expression darkened and mottled with rage, but he didn't da

"I certainly misunderstood your grandpa," I said, smiling awkwardly. What a huge misunderstanding."Andrew, please thank your grandpa for me—""Why not thank me in person?"Walter's voice suddenly rang out. I jumped, having no idea when he had come in. I looked at Walter nervously, then quickly lowered my head. "Mr. Stone Senior, I don't know where to begin—"I was just about to sit up when a broad hand pressed me gently back onto the bed. "Lie down. You saved Andrew, so that makes you a benefactor of the Stone family. This is nothing—we're even."Walter's gaze shifted to the cup of water beside me. He tested the temperature, then frowned. "Bring another cup and make sure it's warm."Faced with his concern, I was so moved that I didn't know what to say. When the water was brought over, Andrew immediately stood up and reached for it. "I'll do it. You should get some rest, Avery."Walter watched the two of us back and forth, a smile slowly forming. He suddenly asked, "Nala, wha

Andrew? Why was he here? I had to be dreaming. When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was a ridiculously handsome face staring at me from inches away. The next second, he pulled me into a tight hug. "You're finally awake!""Andrew? Is that you?" I asked. When I was studying film, I once attended a charity gala with my mentor and ended up helping an injured man. He said he was being targeted by bad people and had nowhere to go, so out of kindness, I let him stay with me for a month. Then, one day, he took off. All he left behind was a note that said, "I'm going home, Nally. If you ever need help, call this number."Andrew nervously gripped my hand. "You know, after I went home, I'd been wanting to see you again. But Grandpa was worried I'd be targeted again, so he sent me abroad."He continued, "When Avery called me, I was scared out of my mind. I bought the first ticket home immediately. Do you know? You were unconscious for three days…"I moved my hands and feet. Although

One time, Caleb went three days without sleeping. I saw how haggard he looked and yanked him away from his computer, shoving him under the covers."Are you kidding me, Nala? I haven't finished the proposal!" he barked, scowling at me."I don't care if you're mad at me. You have to put up with this," I said, handing him a mug of warm milk. "I'm not leaving until you sleep."He stared at me for a long moment, then broke into a smile. "Nala… With you here, I feel like I can actually make it." Gradually, his startup began to gain traction. Meanwhile, I slowly withdrew from the acting world. My friends all said I was crazy, turning my back on a promising career just to be a housewife for a man.I didn't care about the noise. I loved Caleb, and I was willing to be the woman supporting him.Since he was too busy to take care of himself, I made a point of cooking for him every day—simmering soups, making steaks, and flamming up his favorite barbecued ribs. Each time he ate, his mouth w

Halfway through the drive, I could feel a dull ache spreading through my abdomen. Before long, it turned into searing pain. That was when it hit me—something was wrong with the liquid Sadie forced on me.I had thought she was only trying to humiliate me, but I realized then she was far more vicious than I had imagined. She was afraid that if I somehow survived and returned to the Ingram residence, the spot she had worked so hard to steal would no longer be hers.Hence, she wanted me to die on the way to Walter's place, to lose both the baby and me in one clean stroke. That way, the blame could be pinned on him, and it would have nothing to do with her. With Walter's power, who in their right mind would investigate him?At that thought, I quickly informed Avery in the front seat, "Please help me… My stomach hurts a lot…" His visage paled. "What happened to you, Ms. Brown? Mr. Stone Senior ordered me to deliver you to him in one piece!"Half an hour later, the luxury car stopped a
