Road to the Observatory (Gabriel’s POV)

The road curled like a scar along the coast, narrow and dark, the ocean breathing beside us. I kept one hand on the wheel, the other loose on my thigh, trying not to stare at Vera every two seconds.

She sat quiet in the passenger seat, chin tipped toward the window. The sea was black tonight. No moon on the water. Just mist rolling in slow sheets, like something alive was crossing our path and never quite leaving.

Her fingers worried the edge of her moonstone necklace. Twist. Release. Twist again.

The bond tugged in my chest. Not pain. Not fear. Static. Like bad reception inside my ribs.

“Hey,” I said, keeping my voice light. “If you’re trying to burn a hole through the ocean, it’s not working.”

She blinked, pulled back from whatever dark place she was in. “What?”

“You’ve been glaring at the water for five minutes,” I said. “It’s starting to feel judged.”

She huffed. “Sorr

The room felt too quiet after Cee said the word.Starheart.It hung there, heavy with a meaning that was beginning to dawn on us. This was something that could practically change my doomed fate. I leaned over the table, palms flat against old leather and cold glass. Cee’s sketches were spread out, messy but clear. Lines crossed lines. Stars bled into circles. The same pattern showed up again and again, like a pulse trapped on paper. My chest tightened. The moonstone at my throat stayed dull. No warmth. No answer. Just dead weight.“You shouldn’t be standing,” Gideon said from my left.“I’m fine,” I said automatically.Max didn’t say anything. He just shifted closer, like he was ready to catch me if my knees gave out. That annoyed me more than Gideon’s words.Cee’s voice dropped to a whisper. “The vision isn’t stable. It keeps… sliding.”“Sliding how?” I asked. She rubbed her arms. “Like a heartbeat that won’t stay in rhythm. It shows me one place, then another. Land. Water. Concrete.

Whisper of the Starheart (Vera's POV)By the time the moon climbed to the top of the skylight, Starfang’s library looked like a war zone.Scrolls, old leather books, and glowing tablets covered the long oak table in the center. Empty coffee cups and snack wrappers filled the spaces between. We had dragged almost every file tagged “moonstone,” “first alpha,” “balance,” and “don’t touch” into one pile.Cee’s sketches sat in the middle. The star-shaped heart. I stared at that drawing until my eyes hurt. The moonstone at my throat sat heavy and lifeless.Gideon stood at the far end of the table, arms crossed, reading glasses low on his nose. Max sat to his right, flipping through a brittle book with careful hands. Eleanor moved like a ghost between shelves, plucking more records down.Gabriel sat next to me, shoulder pressed warm against mine, his tablet balanced on one knee.“Okay,” Cee said, rubbing her temples. “I think my brain is soup.”“Same,” I muttered. “Cursed soup.”Gabriel’s

Empty Howl (Gabriel's POV)I knew where she would go before I saw her.The training grounds were almost always loud at this hour. Barked orders, groans, laughter.Today, dawn sat over an empty ring. Mist clung low to the ground. Vera stood in the center of the circle, back to me, hair tied in a rough knot. She wore a simple black tank and shorts, bare arms marked with bruises from the battle that hadn’t fully faded yet.She slashed at the nearest dummy. No aura. No flare of power. Just a clean, human-speed strike. Wood thudded. The dummy rocked back, wobbling instead of flying. She hit it again. And again. Each blow sharper than the last, her shoulders tight, jaw clenched. My wolf whined low in my chest.I stepped down from the edge of the concrete path and onto the packed dirt. “Wow,” I called. “What did that dummy ever do to you?”Her next hit landed off-center. The dummy spun and almost top

When the Power Fades (Vera's POV)Drums pounded, deep and steady, shaking the wooden floor under my boots. Voices, howls and cheers rose in one tangled wave.“Alpha heir, coming through,” Dax yelled behind me, mostly so he could elbow people aside.“I can walk,” I muttered, even as bodies pressed around me, hands clapping my shoulders, my back, my arms. Wolves reached in from both sides of the hall corridor, trying to touch me like I was lucky or holy or something in between.“Not with that face,” Jace said from my other side. He wasn’t wrong. The council hall opened up in front of us, wide and bright. Banners hung from the rafters, Starfang’s silver wolf side by side with Nightmoor’s crescent and Stargazer’s star glyph. Tables were packed with food.Wolves filled the space. Some in torn clothes, some still bandaged. But they were standing. Laughing. Alive. That part I let sink in. We had won. Zorak was gone.My fingers brushed the stone at my throat, feeling the jagged crack.“Go,”

Cracks in the Light (Gabriel's POV)For one long second after the curse, no one moved. Then Vera staggered.“Vera.” My voice came out hoarse. I was already running. I closed the distance and caught her around the waist before she could hit the ground. Her body felt too light.“Easy,” I said, pulling her against my chest. “Hey Alpha. You still with me?”She let out a breath that tried to be a laugh and failed halfway. “You really have to stop calling me that,” she muttered, voice rough.“Tell that to the beam-throwing, god-killing thing you just did,” I said. “You were terrifying. Also hot. Very annoying combination.”Her mouth twitched. “You have the worst taste.”“Apparently,” I said. “Considering I fell for the girl who keeps trying to die in front of me.”This time a real, small laugh came out of her. She sagged into my grip for a second, head tipping against my shoulder. Her hand fisted in
