Two days later.....
The dining hall was warm with the glow of candlelight, and quiet. The only sounds heard were the shuffling feet of servants moving in and out of the hall, refilling goblets and replacing dishes. Mona sat opposite Alpha Jerry, smiling sweetly. "I am so happy to see you looking much better my love." She told him. He nodded slightly, trying not to wince at the word, my love. It always sounded wrong when she said it. When Sharon had called him that it sounded like music. His jaw tightened: Stop thinking about her. "My love?" He blinked and looked up. Mona had been talking but he hadn't heard a word. " I said," she repeated, "that I want silk to be used for the clothes we will wear for the ceremony." "Of course. Speak to the royal tailor." "And my crown? I hope you had them make it exactly like I asked?" He nodded. "Is it ready yet?" She asked excited. He made a vague sound. "Yes or no?" She asked sharply. "The ceremony is in a few weeks, everything should be ready by now." He put his spoon down and looked at her. He hadn't yet told her the ceremony was being proponed and she would be moved to another pack. He was scared of her reaction, but he had to. It would be wrong to get her hopes up. "My love," she said with forced gentleness, "is something wrong? Please tell me. Remember I am your mate now." He forced a smile. "Let us talk after dinner." She smiled to mask her anger and anxiety: What did the fool want to say now? They finished the meal in silence, broken only by the soft babbling of Kyle, who was happily smearing mashed cheese across his high chair as his nanny fed him. When the meal ended Mona rose and went to her son, lifting him from the chair. "Let me put our son to bed and join you in your chambers my love." She said softly. She left the hall, followed by the nanny and walked to Kyle's bedroom. She tucked Kyle into his crib, smoothing his soft hair. When he fell asleep she turned to the nanny. "Listen carefully. Lock the window and door. Then make sure you check on him every ten minutes." She ordered. "Yes ma'am." Satisfied, she went to join the Alpha in his chamber. She found him standing before the fireplace, his back to her, gazing at a framed picture of Sharon. Her blood boiled watching him, but she hid her feelings. "My love, what do you want to talk about?" She asked sweetly. He turned. "About the confirmation ceremony" "What about it? Are things not according to your taste? Tell me who is slacking and I will punish them!" "No, take it easy. You are too quick to talk about punishment." He said annoyed. "Sharon was more compassionate, that's why people loved her." Mona clenched her fist in fury. "Yet your perfect Sharon killed your mother! How dare you compare me to her! Aren't you ashamed to even say her name?" "I'm sorry," he said quickly, raising his hands in a small appeasing gesture. "Please don't be mad." She force her anger down: Just wait till I am officially Luna. "What did you want to say about the ceremony?" She mumbled. "I want to prosp-" A frightened scream tore through the night, making them jump. "What is that?" Mona asked frightened. Jerry was already moving. "Stay here!" She didn't listen. Together they ran into the hall. Judy and Beta Frank appeared from the opposite corridor. "What is going on?" Judy asked. "I don't know but it is coming from our son's room " Mona said running upstairs. "Not so fast! It might be an attack." Her father called as they all followed her. The nanny stood in front of Kyle's room, holding him tightly and whimpering. "What happened here?" Mona demanded, snatching her son from the woman's arms. The nanny pointed to the room. "I came into the room to check on the baby like you said, and caught that man standing over him with a knife!" Jerry and Frank shouldered past them into the nursery where the guards wrestled a man in red clothing to the floor. His face was smeared with dirt and sweat and on his forehead, was a deep red burn mark. The mark of a rogue assassin wolf. "You monster! Trying to kill a baby." Mona spat at him, clutching her son. Jerry hauled the man up by the collar and smashed a fist into his face. "You son of a bitch! Who sent you?" Frank held him back, while the assassin snarled but remained silent. "Talk." Frank demanded. Still silence. "Take him to the dungeon, I will interrogate him myself." Jerry ordered. The man was dragged away. "Wait! I will talk, in exchange for mercy." He said. "Out with it!" Frank fumed. "I was paid 50 gold pieces to kill the boy. The air in the room turned heavy. "Who paid you?" Jerry demanded. The assassin's eyes slid past Mona. For a heartbeat he appeared to be looking at the nanny, until everyone realized he was looking at the person behind her. "Gamma Judy." He said coldly. There was a deafening silence.Dusk’s mouth slid from Elena’s lips to her neck, which he nibbled lovingly while caressing her belly. “If I don’t pull back now I won’t be able to.” He murmured, tugging at the straps of her gown. “Good." She breathed. "Because I don’t want you to.” A sharp knock broke the spell. “What?” Dusk barked. “I apologize for the interruption my lord and lady, but it’s time for the lady’s rest.” A soft, cautious voice said. “I will be out later Drianna.” Elena said and tried to kiss her husband again. “My lady, remember the healer insisted you must be in bed by this time every evening. For the babies sake.” Drianna reminded her. “In that case you must rest my dear.” Dusk said, kissed her hands gently. “I am rested being with you." She teased. "The baby will be fine.” "And I will be fine once you follow the doctor’s orders,” he said, helping her up. “Now go. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She kissed him. “Remember what you promised.” “I do.” After she left the room seemed cold
“He is insane!” “I knew the despicable leech was reckless and stupid!” “We should do this without him!” The council hall of the Wolves trembled with the noise. Jerry listened with a calm expression, but inside he was in turmoil. The news the Noxala had brought from Vampirehaven had been devastating. THE CHALICE IS THE PRIDE OF VAMPIREHAVEN. IT WILL NOT BE GIVEN TO INFERIOR WOLVES, WITCHES, OR ZOMBIES. The message had read. “What in the Moon Realm is wrong with this idiot!” Frank had yelled. after he'd read the message. “Does he not realize the seriousness of this situation?” “Summon a council meeting immediately.” Jerry ordered. The meeting was called and all the councilmen and Alpha were as shocked as Frank to learn about Dusk’s refusal. Now they sat arguing the best way to deal with the stubborn vampire. “Let us send an army and take it by force!” Alpha Nic suggested. “I agree!” Another said. “That would lead to war and unimaginable destruction.” Som ca
“I am sure you both did your part.” Jerry said uneasily, trying to diffuse the tension. “We didn’t do anything! I did.” Mona said stubbornly. “Alpha what was the outcome of your journey?” Someone in the crowd asked, interrupting the confrontation. “Is there hope?” Another added. “You will all be informed shortly.” Jerry said, then turned to Frank. “Have them announce for every adult in the kingdom to meet here in an hour. I will address them.” He went in, followed by Som. Frank arranged the announcement and went in too, followed by a complaining Mona who told him the humiliation she had received from Som. “I want him and that peasant punished.” She declared. “Ignore it.” Frank said and entered his chamber. Mona followed. “How can you say that father? How do you honestly expect me to ignore such an insult? I can’t. I won’t.” “You can and you will!” He said firmly, tired of her grumblings. “Som is one of the Alpha’s most respected councilmen. The Alpha won’t t
The sun was high in the sky, that afternoon when Jerry and his men rode into Wolf Kingdom. Some farmers at the edge of the village saw the party riding in and stared in apprehension, that turned to shock they saw Toby with the party. “It can’t be.” An onlooker mummured. Another abandoned his tools and hurried into town, eager to spread the news. Inside the castle, Anna sat besides Seraphina, watching her sleep. She had been inside for two whole days and longed for fresh air and sunshine, but the thought of running into the Luna and having another showdown frightened her. She knew she had already made herself Mona’s enemy and didn’t want to make things worse. "How much longer before we are allowed to go home?" She muttered to her child. And how had the Moon Pool visit gone? Had Toby survived? Sighing she looked out the window, feeling lonely and miserable. In the distance she could see someone running towards the city. “I wonder what he is so excited about?” She muttere
Donton continued. "But she could not undo the blood already spilled, or the seeds of hate planted by Tenebris, which caused all the kingdoms to turn on each other, each blaming the other for the unrest.” “The First War,” Jerry said grimly. Donton nodded. “Yes. sibling against sibling, kingdom against kingdom. The only people spared the acrimony were Zombies. Mortava remained neutral, shielding us for the chaos. The Moon Goddess managed to call a truce, then to encourage communication among the kingdoms, she created a neutral messenger. From Wolves she took their heightened senses, loyalty and ability to track across vast distances. From Vampires she took wings, night vision, ability to glide silently through the skies. From Witches, their magical sigils glowing on their bodies, giving them the power of illusions. From Zombies, resilience, ability to travel tirelessly without rest, and an eerie aura that wards off predators. The creature was known as the Noxala, a swift messeng
“You are all wondering who Lupus Tenebris is as well as Ferrivor.” Donton said breaking the silence, as they all gathered at the center of the cave. “I am guessing you know the answer to both questions.” Jerry said. Donton nodded. “Zombies are one of the Moon Goddess’ oldest creations, we know more history that anyone creature and our scholars write everything down.” “Then out with the information and stop boasting Ash brain.” Dusk snapped rudely. “Before you say another word, we need to build a fire. I am freezing.” Marge said rubbing her arms. “No we don’t. The weather is fine. Dusk growled. “Not for me. I am a witch. We need warmth.” “She is right.” Jerry agreed. “It is very cold.” Donton nodded in agreement. Seeing he was outnumbered, Dusk began to grumbled. They all gathered bits of sticks in a pile and with some incantation from Marge, the fire began to blaze. They all say round it except Dusk , who lingered at the edge of the group, his pale face half
