ALICE

{Days Before The Wedding}

The stadium was alive with the sound of thousands of fans shouting as the hockey game began. I sat in the very front row, holding up a bright cardboard sign to cheer for Dominic. I had arrived early just to secure this exact spot so he could see me. Dominic was a rising national hockey star and the love of my life.

We had been together since our final year of high school. When he first asked me to be his girlfriend, I felt like the luckiest girl in the world, and I had spent every moment since then supporting his dream. Even though the team gave him a professional assistant, he still came to me for advice on big decisions.

"Go Dominic!" I screamed, my voice cutting through the noise. Beside me, my best friend Brea made a face and shook her head.

"Alice, save your voice or you won't be able to speak at your own wedding," Brea said, though she laughed as she lifted her own sign.

"I can't help it," I said, my chest tight with excitement. "I need them to win this game so badly."

"I know, I know, he's your fiancé," Brea muttered, rolling her eyes in a playful way. "Of course you want him to win." She gestured toward the ice with her sign. "But look at Devon. That man looks like a statue carved by a master artist. The genetics on him are just not fair."

I gave her a playful look of mock disgust before turning my attention right back to Dominic. He glided across the ice, moving the puck with total control and speed. For three years, if anyone asked me who the most handsome man alive was, my answer would always be Dominic.

Suddenly, the team took a shot and scored, sending the crowd into a frenzy. I waved my sign high as the players skated around the rink, smiling and waving back at their fans. Dominic's blue eyes found mine for a second, but then his gaze slid past me. He looked toward the other section of the front row, locking eyes with Amber.

Amber was a redhead with striking green eyes and a perfect figure that I had envied since high school. The rumors were that Dominic had dated her briefly, breaking things off just days before he asked me out. Dominic stared at her, a boyish smile spreading across his face.

My stomach twisted into a hard knot, and the sign in my hands went limp. "Why is she even here?" I whispered.

Brea followed my gaze and groaned loudly. "The snake actually showed up," Brea said, crossing her arms. "It’s ridiculous how she gets a front-row seat even when she shows up late. I know her family has money, but it’s totally unfair."

I barely heard what Brea was saying. My eyes stayed glued to Dominic, who couldn't seem to look away from Amber until another player slapped his shoulder to drag him back to reality. The game ended shortly after, but the joy I usually felt was completely gone.

"Alice, look," Brea said, tapping her phone screen. "They're handing out limited-edition team stickers in the main hallway. We have to go get some before they run out."

I forced a smile and let Brea pull me out of the stands toward the exit, taking one last look back at the ice before we left. I tried to tell myself I was overreacting. Dominic told me he loved me every single day. He wanted to spend his life with me. I looked down at the diamond ring on my finger, letting the spark of the stone quiet the doubts in my mind.

The hallway was packed with fans pushing and shoving to get to the table. "Alright, I'm going to have to fight my way through this crowd," Brea said, rollings up her sleeves. "Watch my back."

"You are ridiculous, Brea," I said, laughing for the first time in an hour. "I don't know how we became friends."

"Because we're a team," Brea yelled over her shoulder as she disappeared into the sea of people. I stood against the wall for a few minutes, watching the crowd, but grew restless. I decided to walk down the quieter back hallway toward the locker room to surprise Dominic.

I was walking quickly when Brea’s voice echoed from far behind me, calling my name. I turned my head to look for her and walked straight into a solid chest. The impact knocked me back a step. I looked up and found Devon standing there, a sharp smirk touched his lips as his gray eyes dropped to my hand.

"You should look where you're going," Devon said, his voice flat. "I really don't want to deal with Dominic bunny."

I rolled my eyes and held my hand up, purposely letting the diamond catch the light right in front of his face. It had become a reflex to show it off. "I am not his bunny, Devon. I am his future wife."

Devon looked at the ring with clear distaste before stepping past me. He paused, looking over his shoulder. "If I were you, I’d turn around. The locker room isn't a good place for you right now."

He walked away without waiting for a response. I stared after him for a second, annoyed by his attitude, and ignored the warning completely. I kept walking toward the door, assuming he was just being his usual arrogant self.

As I reached the short entrance to the locker room, the sound of loud laughter filtered through the doorway. It was the normal post-game celebration, the guys teasing each other after a win. But then, I heard my name, and my feet froze to the floor.

"You should have seen Alice's face when you were staring at Amber out there," one of the players jeered, followed by a chorus of laughs. "She looked like she was about to cry right into her cheer sign."

"Leave her alone, Gerald," another voice laughed. "Poor girl really thinks she won the lottery with Dominic."

My chest went completely cold. I crept closer to the edge of the open door, peering through the gap. Dominic was sitting on the bench, stripping off his gear, a wide smirk on his face.

"Seriously, man, when are you going to end the game?" Gerald asked, leaning against a locker. "The wedding is in two days. You can't actually go through with marrying Alice when everyone knows you've been spending your nights with Amber."

Dominic let out a chuckle, shaking his head as he untied his skates. "I'm not ending anything yet. Do you know how much good press this wedding is giving the team? The loyal high school sweetheart story is perfect for my image. Besides, Amber understands the deal. She knows who holds my heart."

"Yeah, well, Amber is going to start showing pretty soon," Gerald said, dropping his voice slightly, though it still reached my ears perfectly. "You can't hide a pregnant mistress forever, Dominic. Especially not from your new wife."

Dominic stood up, tossing his towel onto the bench with a shrug. "I'll handle Alice. She’s quiet, she’s sweet, and she does whatever I say. She won't find out until after the papers are signed, and by then, it won't matter."

ALICEI looked back at the stadium one last time and realized I had zero desire to go inside. The game was almost over anyway, and after that talk with Dominic’s father, my head was spinning. I couldn't think straight.I turned away from the entrance, walked to the curb, and got into a cab. The moment the door clicked shut, a long breath slid past my lips. I looked down at my lap and tried to stop my hands from shaking."You are not afraid of him," I told myself, closing my eyes and leaning my head back against the seat. But deep down, I knew Mr. Stevens was not a man who made empty threats. When he spoke, he meant every single word.By the time the cab pulled up to Devon's house, I had managed to force myself to calm down. I paid the driver, walked inside, and collapsed onto the living room couch. I pulled my hair up into a messy bun, just wanting to disappear into the cushions. My stomach let out a loud rumble as a reminder that I had not eaten a single thing since morning, and I ha

ALICE"Are you okay?" Jerry asked, his voice filled with worry as he helped me pull myself up off the floor.I looked down at my arm. The skin was already turning bright red from the heat of the spilled coffee, and my shirt was soaked in sticky brown liquid. All around the shop, the remaining customers were whispering, their eyes glued to me."I'm fine, Jerry," I said, forcing a calm smile. He blinked in surprise, clearly expecting me to burst into tears after what Dominic had just done. "Please help me clean up this mess. I am going to go wash up in the back.""Are you sure?" Jerry asked, his eyes darting toward the front door where Dominic had just vanished. "Because right now, I really want to slam that jerk's head into the brick wall.""I'm okay, really," I insisted. I bent down, ignoring the sting on my skin as I picked up the ruined cupcakes and piled them onto the tray with the broken pieces of the ceramic cups. "Go grab the mop, okay?"Jerry hesitated, looking at me like he wa

DEVON"You mean her mother told you all of that?" Mac asked, sliding onto the bench next to me."She is worried for Alice," I said, pulling my shoulder pads over my head and tugging my team jersey down over them. "And she has a very solid reason to feel that way.""Yeah," Mac muttered. He raised a hand to greet the rest of the guys as they walked into the locker room, their skates clinking against the floor. "Have you figured out who that guy was, or if Dominic was the one who sent him?"I strapped my shin guards tight and stood up, testing the weight on my feet. "Not yet. But I will."Mac nodded slowly. We grabbed our hockey sticks and joined the line of players heading down the narrow concrete tunnel toward the ice rink.We passed Dominic and Gerald coming from the opposite direction. Dominic’s jaw was set, his face dark with rage. Our eyes locked for a tense second before he pushed past us and vanished into the opposing locker room."I still don't understand his problem," Mac said

ALICEI walked over to the prep table and slapped the sticky note down beside the order slips Jerry had already lined up."Another order," Maria said with a small smile, but the tight lines around her eyes remained. I could tell something was weighing on her mind, but I didn't want to pry."Here's your first order," she added, pointing to a box on the metal counter. "Take your time with this one.""Got it," I replied.I picked up the clear plastic box of cupcakes and carried it back out to the front area. The woman who had placed the order stood up immediately, walked over, and tapped her card against the payment machine. She stared at my face for a long moment, but Jerry glared right back at her until she took her box and hurried out the front door. The moment the bell above the door chimed, I kept my eyes fixed on the computer screen. I refused to look toward the corner table by the front window where Dominic and Gerald were sitting. Every few seconds, the sound of their loud laugh

ALICE"Oh my God, Alice!" Jerry, my assistant at the counter, gasped the moment I walked into the back dressing area.I dropped my bag on the bench and immediately reached for my dark blue apron, smoothing down the fabric where my name tag was pinned."Hey, Jerry," I said with a smile, tying the strings tightly around my waist. "How have things been around here?""Honestly? It was so boring that it made everyone realize you're the heart and soul of this shop," he chuckled, walking over to lean against the wall beside me."Aw, I missed you guys too," I said, picking up my order notepad.I walked out to the front counter, and Jerry followed right behind me to take his usual spot at the register. "Have you seen Mr. Barks today? Did he ask of me?"I turned on the computer monitor, typing in my password to log into the sales system."Nope. He's been on sick leave ever since the day you left," Jerry replied, leaning his elbow on the counter. He squinted at me, his brown eyes searching my fa

DEVON"Where is our next stop, sir?" my driver asked as he pulled away from the cupcakery shop."Lin Wear," I replied, resting my back against the seat as I finally allowed myself to breathe. My mind drifted to the call I had gotten from Alice's mother earlier that morning, right after I woke up. The way she had sounded made it obvious she was worried, and I couldn't help but wonder what had made her that way, not to mention how she had gotten my number.I pulled my phone from my pocket and stared at the screen. Alice's number was sitting there, waiting to be saved. I hesitated, wondering what name to put in.Cupcake?Or just Alice?I bit my lip. The memory of her at that party suddenly flashed through my mind, her wide eyes, her voice barely above a whisper as she asked me to take her virginity. The temptation of that moment had been stuck in my head ever since.A small smirk tugged at my lips as I typed Wifey and hit save. I stared at the screen for another second before slipping my
