Chapter 7

The silence that followed was deafening. Damien felt as if all the air had been sucked from the garage, leaving him gasping in a vacuum of betrayal and vindication. He had been right. His suspicions, his paranoia, his absolute certainty that this was all an elaborate con—all of it had been justified.

"That's..." Marcus's voice trailed off, and when he spoke again, there was something almost like admiration in his tone. "That's actually brilliant. But what about yesterday? The stabbing? Why would she go that far?"

"To make it believable, obviously." Gwen's tone suggested she was explaining something to a particularly slow child. "She needed Damien to trust her completely, to never question her motivations. What better way than to literally take a blade for him? Now he'll be so grateful, so convinced of her devotion, that he'll never see the betrayal coming."

"And what do I get out of this?" Marcus asked, his voice taking on a calculating edge. "If Sadie's going to be playing

Chapter 18By the time Damien had finally confronted Derek about his supposed manipulations, their friendship had been damaged beyond repair. Derek had been hurt and confused by accusations he didn't understand, while Damien had been too proud and too convinced of Marcus's supposed friendship to see the truth. Their estrangement had made it easy for Marcus to execute his final betrayal—Damien isolated, Derek kept at arm's length, neither of them able to warn the other when danger came calling. This time would be different. This time, Damien would cling to Derek's loyalty like a lifeline, would ignore any attempts Marcus made to drive them apart. Because he knew now what he hadn't known then: Derek's devotion was genuine, while Marcus's friendship had been nothing but an elaborate con designed to position himself for maximum destruction. The connecting door to the Rose Suite remained closed, but Damien found himself staring at it anyway, wondering what Sadie was doing on the other side

Chapter 17He couldn't tell Derek about the previous timeline. His friend would think he had lost his mind, probably try to have him committed for psychiatric evaluation. But he could use the knowledge that timeline had given him to keep them both alive this time around."Call it paranoia," Damien said lightly. "Or call it learning from experience. People who are willing to commit fraud for money aren't usually squeamish about escalating if they feel threatened. If Sadie realizes we're onto her, if Marcus and Gwen decide we're too dangerous to leave loose... I want to make sure we're prepared for any eventuality."Derek studied him for a long moment, his sharp eyes searching Damien's face for something. Finally, he nodded slowly. "Alright. I'll follow her tomorrow, document everything, pull whatever records I can access. But Damien, if at any point this starts to feel like we're in actual danger—not just financial danger but physical danger—I'm pulling the plug. I'll drag you out of t

Chapter 16The connecting door between the Rose Suite and Damien's bedroom clicked shut with a finality that seemed to echo through the darkened space. Derek leaned against it for a moment, his sharp eyes fixed on Damien's rigid form silhouetted against the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city lights twinkled in the distance, casting shadows across Damien's face that made him look older, harder, more dangerous than the wounded groom he had played so convincingly downstairs."This is insane," Derek said without preamble, pushing off from the door to pace the length of the room like a caged predator. "Absolutely certifiably insane. We have everything we need, Damien. We heard them confess in the parking garage. We know exactly what she's planning. Why are we playing this elaborate game when we could end it right now?"Damien didn't turn from the window, his hands resting motionless on the arms of his wheelchair. "And how exactly would you propose we end it, Derek? What's your brilliant pl

Chapter 15"Reasonable couples usually have a courtship before marriage," Derek pointed out, his tone still suspicious. "Most people don't jump straight into legally binding contracts and then start the getting-to-know-you phase.""Most people don't take knives for their husbands during their wedding ceremonies either," Sadie countered, meeting his challenging gaze directly. "Nothing about our situation is conventional, Derek. I'm just trying to navigate it in a way that respects both Damien's needs and my own."The silence that followed felt heavy, weighted with unspoken questions and careful calculations. Sadie could see Damien and Derek exchanging one of those wordless communications that came from years of friendship, some silent conversation happening beneath the surface that she wasn't privy to.Finally, Damien nodded slowly. "Alright," he said. "We'll maintain separate rooms for now. I'll explain to my parents that you need your own space during recovery, and that we want to ta

Chapter 14The dinner that evening was indeed small by wealthy family standards—only about twenty guests gathered in the Cross estate's formal dining room. But to Sadie, still recovering from her injury and exhausted from the emotional weight of the day, it felt like facing an army.Damien proved to be an excellent host despite his wheelchair, moving smoothly through the gathered guests with practiced ease. He introduced Sadie to business associates, family friends, and distant relatives with the kind of polished charm that spoke of years navigating high society events. Sadie found herself impressed despite herself, watching the way he commanded the room not through physical presence but through sheer force of personality."Your husband is quite remarkable," an elderly woman named Patricia commented as they watched Damien charm a group of investors with what appeared to be an impromptu pitch for some new technology venture. "I've known the Cross family for thirty years, and I've never

Chapter 13"The connecting door leads to Damien's suite," Helena explained, gesturing to an ornate door on the far wall. "We thought it would be easier for you both to maintain some independence during your recovery while still being close enough to help each other if needed.""It's perfect," Sadie said honestly. "Thank you so much for all of this.""Nonsense, dear. You're family now." Helena pressed a kiss to Sadie's forehead with maternal affection. "Now, we're going to have a small welcome dinner tonight—nothing too elaborate given your condition, but we've invited a few close friends to officially welcome you to the family. Is that alright?"A party. Of course there would be a party. Wealthy families like the Crosses marked every significant occasion with some form of social gathering, even if they called it "small" and "intimate." Sadie forced a smile despite her exhaustion. "That sounds lovely."After Helena departed with promises to send someone to help her dress for dinner, Sa
