And head down to the dining.

The dining room filled slowly with quiet movement and polite sounds—chairs sliding back, cups being set down, footsteps approaching.

Selena looked up just as her husband entered.

He was dressed impeccably, as always. Dark suit, crisp shirt, the faint, expensive cologne she had once associated with comfort. He paused when he saw her, a practiced smile forming on his lips.

“You’re up early,” he said casually. “I thought you’d still be asleep.”

Selena rose from her chair, smoothing her skirt. “It’s your birthday,” she replied softly. “Of course I’m up.”

Her tone was gentle. Warm. Perfect.

He didn’t notice the stillness behind her eyes.

He stepped closer and kissed her cheek, quick and distracted. She felt nothing—no warmth, no disappointment. Just awareness. The angle of his body. The lack of affection in the gesture.

“Well,” he said, pulling out a chair, “I’m curious. You always like to make a big deal out of today.”

Selena smiled.

Once, she had taken pride in that. In being predictable. Reliable.

Now, predictability was a weapon.

“I prepared something special,” she said, returning to her seat. “But let’s eat first.”

Breakfast passed smoothly. He talked about meetings, about a deal he was close to closing. Selena listened attentively, nodding in all the right places, offering the occasional thoughtful comment. She played her role flawlessly.

From the corner of her eye, she saw another figure enter the room.

Her best friend.

She arrived unannounced, as she often did, dressed elegantly, confidence woven into every step. She greeted Selena with an affectionate smile that once would have meant everything.

“Happy birthday,” she said to him, leaning in just a little too close. “I hope you like my gift.”

He laughed. “You always know how to surprise me.”

Selena watched them without expression.

So this was how it had looked from the outside.

After breakfast, Selena stood and picked up the slim folder she had placed discreetly beside her chair.

“I know you’re busy today,” she said, walking around the table. “So I’ll keep this short.”

His eyes flicked to the folder immediately.

Interest sparked.

She handed it to him with both hands, head slightly lowered. A picture of devotion.

“This is my gift to you,” she said. “I wanted it to mean something.”

He opened the folder.

As his eyes scanned the first page, his posture straightened. Surprise flashed across his face, followed quickly by delight. He looked up at her, disbelief and excitement mixing together.

“Selena… this is—” He laughed, a sharp burst of sound. “Are you serious?”

She nodded, smile shy. “You’ve worked so hard. And we’re married now. What’s mine is yours.”

Her best friend leaned closer, eyes darting over the pages. The smile on her face stiffened for a fraction of a second before returning.

“This is incredible,” she said lightly. “You’re really generous.”

Generous.

That was the word they always used.

He flipped through the documents eagerly, barely reading, already convinced he knew what they contained. His joy was unrestrained.

“You didn’t have to do this,” he said, though his grip tightened on the folder. “This changes everything.”

Selena met his gaze, eyes soft.

“That’s what I hoped.”

She watched him sign.

Watched him accept.

Watched him celebrate a victory that wasn’t real.

Hidden beneath the polished language and carefully worded clauses was a detail most people overlooked—one her lawyers had once explained to her in passing, back when she trusted him enough to ignore it.

A conditional structure.

A return trigger.

A quiet safeguard that activated not through emotion, but through action.

Through betrayal.

The document gave him access.

But not ownership.

Not truly.

Her best friend noticed the final page and frowned slightly. “There’s an addendum?”

Selena laughed softly. “Just formalities. My family insists on them.”

He waved it off. “Lawyers love complicating simple things.”

He signed anyway.

The pen scratched across the paper, sealing something he didn’t understand.

Selena accepted the folder back, closing it carefully.

Applause broke out from the staff who had gathered at the doorway. Someone brought out a cake. Candles were lit. Wishes were made.

He looked radiant.

Her best friend watched him with barely concealed envy, eyes sharp, calculating. She glanced at Selena—just for a moment—and Selena met her gaze with a serene smile.

No challenge.

No suspicion.

Just acceptance.

Later, as preparations for the evening celebration began, Selena excused herself quietly. She returned to the bedroom and locked the door behind her.

She leaned against it, exhaling slowly.

There was no rush of triumph. No thrill.

Only certainty.

She crossed the room and placed the folder into the safe hidden behind a false panel in the wall. The lock clicked shut.

In the mirror above the dresser, her reflection watched calmly.

“Enjoy it,” she said softly, adjusting her hair. “You won’t have it long.”

Outside, laughter echoed down the hallway. Plans were being made. Toasts rehearsed. Futures imagined.

Selena picked up her phone and sent a brief message to her lawyer.

It’s done. Proceed as discussed.

She set the phone down and smiled again—gentle, obedient, flawless.

Then, so quietly it was almost a thought, she added,

“This is where you fall.”

Coffee was poured. Screens glowed. People settled into their seats with the quiet confidence of those who believed they understood the room.Selena en

“Tonight, we celebrate.”That was what her husband announced the moment he stepped through the doors of the private lounge he’d reserved. Crystal lights glinted overhead, champagne already chilling in silver buckets, the city skyline stretched wide and obedient behind the glass.Selena arrived at his side, elegant and composed, her hand resting lightly on his arm.He looked triumphant.Whatever doubts had crept into him over the past few days were buried beneath applause, clinking glasses, and the eager smiles of people who mistook confidence for power.“To expansion,” he declared, lifting his glass. “To leadership. And to the future.”“To the future,” the room echoed.Selena smiled and took a sip.It tasted like patience. Her husband moved through the crowd like a man newly crowned. He accepted congratulations, slapped shoulders, and laughed loudly. Every story he told grew slightly grander with each retelling.“We’ve secured the next phase,” he said to a group of investors. “The str

And that's her husband who woke up uneasy. He didn’t say it out loud, of course. He never admitted doubt—not to others, not even to himself. But the way he checked his phone before getting out of bed, the way his fingers lingered on unread notifications, told Selena everything. At breakfast, he cleared his throat unnecessarily.“I’m making a few leadership adjustments today,” he announced, buttering his toast with forced confidence. “Strategic moves. People need to see I’m in control.”Selena poured his coffee, unhurried. “That sounds important.”“It is,” he said quickly. “The board’s been too comfortable. They forget who’s steering the ship.”She met his eyes. “Do they?”He hesitated—just a fraction—then laughed. “Of course not. I’ll remind them.”By noon, the company buzzed with news.A new operations head. A reshuffled regional director. Temporary committees dissolved and rebuilt under his name. His assistant sent out the announcements with pride, his signature bold at the bottom o

  • Reborn To Ruin My Ex Husband    Chapter 16 — The Lawyer Who Owes Her

The office she entered the next afternoon was discreet to the point of anonymity. No name on the door. No receptionist. Just a quiet hallway and a man who stood when he saw her, his expression carefully respectful.“Mrs. Hale,” he said. “It’s been a long time.”Selena closed the door behind her herself. “Longer than you intended.”The lawyer smiled thinly. “I suppose I deserve that.”He gestured for her to sit, but she remained standing.“I didn’t come here for nostalgia,” she said. “I came for certainty.”He nodded and opened a folder already waiting on the desk. Her name was printed on the tab.“You’ve done… meticulous work,” he said after a moment. “Frankly, I’m surprised no one caught it.”“They weren’t looking,” Selena replied. “They never look at the wife.”The lawyer’s fingers stilled. “You understand what this means?”“Yes.”He leaned back slowly. “Your husband can’t undo the current structure without activating at least three exposure clauses. Two would trigger internal audit

  • Reborn To Ruin My Ex Husband    Chapter 15 — Paperwork Is Power

Her husband slept soundly that night.Selena did not.At dawn, the study lights were already on. A thin line of gold crept through the curtains as she sat at the desk, hair tied back, sleeves rolled just enough to suggest work rather than rebellion.Stacks of documents waited patiently. The paper didn’t argue. It didn’t lie. It only obeyed whoever understood it best.Selena opened the first file: Operational Continuity Agreement — Q3. Boring title. Essential function. She read slowly, pen tapping once against the desk.Clause 7 gave temporary voting privileges to operational managers during expansion periods. It had been written years ago, meant to speed decisions when the board was unavailable. No one had ever questioned it.Selena smiled faintly. She added a sub-clause—just a sentence—nestled between references. In the event of managerial conflict or breach of fiduciary alignment, provisional voting weight shall default to the founding shareholder or legally recognized spouse thereo

  • Reborn To Ruin My Ex Husband    Chapter 14 — A Trust Too Easily Given

The next morning, Selena woke to the sound of her husband moving around the bedroom, already dressed, already late.“I’ve got meetings all day,” he said, fastening his watch. “Board calls, investor lunches… I might not be home tonight.”Selena adjusted the cuff of his shirt for him, fingers light and practiced. “I’ll have dinner ready anyway.”He smiled, satisfied by the answer. “You’re finally not asking questions.”“I trust you,” she replied. That single sentence did more than a thousand reassurances ever could.Trust, she had learned, made people careless.By noon, her phone began to ring.“Mrs. Hale,” his assistant said hesitantly, “your husband asked me to forward the revised contracts to you for review. He said you’d… handle it.”Selena paused just long enough to sound surprised. “Of course. Send everything.”She hung up and smiled. In her previous life, this would have terrified her. Responsibility had always felt like pressure—something she wasn’t prepared for, something she m
