My fingers land on his chest.

The second they do, the system floods me with a sharp rush of heat that has nothing to do with courage. Points flash across my vision. The ache that had been building under my skin eases at once, replaced by something warmer and far more dangerous.

[Charm enhancement increased.]
[New suggestion: Maintain contact. Escalate.]

I hate how fast my body reacts. The heat spreads too easily. My hand stays where it is even though every part of me that still remembers the gun wants to pull away.

Luca goes completely still.

He looks down at my hand on his chest like it is the first real thing I have ever done in front of him. When his eyes lift to mine again, the cold distance I expected is gone. What replaces it is sharper. Focused. Almost hungry.

“That,” he says quietly, “is new.”

I try to take my hand back.

His fingers close around my wrist before I can move more than an inch. The grip is not painful. It is firm. Absolute. The kind of hold that tells me he has no intention of letting go until he decides to.

“I didn’t say you could stop.”

My pulse jumps hard enough that I know he can feel it under his thumb. Fear rises fast, old and familiar, mixing with the system’s heat until I can barely tell them apart.

“You’re hurting me,” I lie.

He does not loosen his grip. He only studies my face with that same unsettling attention.

“No. I’m not. You’re scared. There’s a difference.”

The accuracy of it makes my stomach twist. I used to be able to hide everything behind soft answers and lowered eyes. Tonight none of those old tricks are working.

The system pushes harder.

[Host is attempting to withdraw.]
[Resistance detected.]
[Secondary mission unlocked: Force a reaction from the target.]
[Time limit: five minutes.]

Five minutes. Another timer. Another threat of punishment if I fail.

I swallow. My free hand curls into the sheets.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I ask. My voice comes out thinner than I want.

Luca’s thumb moves once across the inside of my wrist, slow and deliberate, like he is testing the way my pulse answers him.

“Because the woman who signed the contract never would have touched me first. She never would have admitted she was afraid. She never would have looked at me the way you’re looking at me right now.”

He leans in slightly. Close enough that I can feel his breath when he speaks again.

“So tell me, Elena. Who are you tonight?”

The question lands like a blade.

I could tell him the truth. That I already died once because of him. That I came back with a system that wants me to break him the same way he broke me. That every second I spend this close feels like standing on the edge of something I might not survive.

Instead the old fear and the new pressure collide inside my chest until the only thing that comes out is raw.

“I’m the woman who doesn’t want to be ignored anymore.”

Something dark and satisfied flickers across his face.

His grip on my wrist tightens just enough to pull me forward. Not roughly. Not gently either. Just enough that I have to catch myself with my other hand against his shoulder or fall into him completely.

The system rewards the movement instantly.

[Escalation registered.]
[Reward issued: 300 points.]
[Warning: Target’s control is slipping. Continue.]

Luca’s voice drops lower.

“Then stop shaking and prove it.”

He releases my wrist only to slide his hand up my arm, slow and intentional, until his fingers rest against the side of my neck. His thumb presses lightly over the place where my pulse is racing.

I should pull away. I should remember the stairs. The gun. The way he watched me die without raising his voice.

Instead the system’s heat and my own panic twist together until I can barely think.

“Luca—”

He cuts me off without raising his voice.

“You started this.” His eyes stay locked on mine. “Now finish it. Or admit that you’re still the same quiet girl who used to look at the floor whenever I walked into a room.”

The challenge sits between us like a live wire.

My body is still trembling. The system is still counting down. And for the first time since I opened my eyes on this bed, I understand that the real conflict is not only between me and him.

It is between the woman who died afraid and the one the system is trying to force me to become.

I either take the next step.

Or the punishment comes.

And from the way Luca is watching me, he already knows which one I am about to choose.

"But I couldn't possibly take the first bite."Giulia's head tilts. "It is tradition.""Then let me honor it properly." I slide the bowl across the linen toward her, slow, until it stops in front of her pearls. "You've been in this family longest, Zia Giulia. A bride should be blessed by the eldest woman at the table. Please. Eat first."The room goes very quiet.Dante's coffee cup comes down on its saucer with a small click. Marco's smile, which had frozen, thaws into something nervous. Rosalind l

Chapter 11"He said I should sleep," I answer.Luca's eyes stay on mine. He is standing in the doorway in his shirtsleeves, the cuffs undone, hair a little rumpled from a couch he clearly never lay down on.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 85%.]Fifteen percent. Salvatore did say that. It is the rest I am leaving out."And?" Luca asks."And that he was sorry to meet me at this hour." I make my voice small and tired, which is not hard. "He said it was a long time since he had seen anyone new in this house."Luca watches me for a while. Then his shoulders drop a fraction, as if he has decided to let this one go. It is not trust. It is a man picking which fight to have before sunrise."He should not be out of the vault," he says. "I will speak to the guards.""Don't."His brow lifts."If you shout at the guards, they'll know he walks." I keep my voice level. "They'll know he can. You said nobody knows he's breathing. How many people know he walks?"The silence that follows is the kind

Chapter 10I do not open the door right away.Every muscle in my body wants to run to the balcony, but the balcony is the second floor, and I have already died once tonight without finding out what a fall feels like."Who is it?" I ask. My voice is steadier than my knees.A dry chuckle comes through the wood. "You know who. You have been reading my name in your own head for the last ten minutes."[Skill 'Read Lies (Lv. 1)': No lie detected.][Warning: Second System signature approaching. Distance: 0 meters.]Zero meters. Just the thickness of a door.Luca said the old man could barely walk. Two strokes, a third that would kill him. I think about calling out for Luca, who is on a couch somewhere down the hall. Then I think about the way the voice said come back from the dead, and I understand something cold: if I shout, whatever happens next happens in front of Luca. And I do not know yet whether Luca should hear it.I open the door.Salvatore Vescari is not what I pictured. He is smal

Chapter 9I could lie. The skill would catch it, and Luca would catch me catching it.So I do the one thing I have never done in front of this man. I tell him a piece of the truth and let it stand on its own."I had a nightmare," I say. "I told you that already.""You told me a version of it.""Then here's the rest." My hands are cold, so I fold them in front of me. "In the nightmare, I left this house. You were waiting at the bottom of the stairs. You didn't shout. You didn't even look angry. You just let it happen."The ache in my spine stops climbing.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 100%.][Punishment suspended.]Luca does not move. The balcony door is still open behind him, and the night air moves the curtain against his shoulder."Let what happen?""The end of me."I watch the words land. I have spent three years studying this man's face, and I know the small tells. A muscle near his jaw. A slow blink, like he is putting something away to look at later. Right now both of them

Chapter 8I do not stay in the bed.The system hums at the edge of my mind like a held breath, and I ignore it. I slide off the mattress, lift the skirt of the wedding dress so it does not drag, and cross the room in bare feet. The door to the hallway is thick, but old houses always have gaps. I learned that in three years of listening to this place from the guest room.I press my ear to the wood."You said you would be on the couch." Sophia's voice. Low now, no performance in it. "The couch is in the other direction.""I said I would sleep. I did not say where."Luca sounds tired. I have never heard him sound tired."You told me this marriage meant nothing," Sophia says.
