Chapter 4

The knock on the door is sharp and familiar.

Luca’s hand stays on my neck. His eyes do not leave mine even as the second knock comes, harder this time. Whoever is on the other side is not used to waiting.

“Don Vescari.” A woman’s voice. Smooth. Confident. The same voice that used to drift down the hallway while I sat alone in the guest room. “You said to come up when I arrived.”

Sophia.

My blood turns cold so fast I feel dizzy. In the first life she never bothered to knock. She walked into rooms like she already owned them. She smiled at me the way people smile at furniture they plan to replace.

The system flares in warning.

[External interruption detected.]
[Mission progress stalled.]
[Host’s elevated stress levels may trigger punishment if contact is broken.]

Luca’s thumb presses once against my pulse. He still has not looked away from me.

“Stay,” he says quietly. It is not a request.

He finally releases my neck and stands. The loss of contact makes the system’s heat twist into something sharper under my skin. I force myself to keep still on the bed even though every instinct wants me to put distance between myself and the door.

Luca opens it.

Sophia stands there in a deep red dress that fits her like it was made to be taken off. Her dark hair is perfect. Her smile is the same one I used to see in my nightmares. She looks past Luca first, straight at me, and the smile sharpens.

“Oh,” she says. “I didn’t realize the little wife was still awake.”

The old version of me would have looked down. Would have made herself smaller. Would have waited for Luca to dismiss her or ignore the insult completely.

My hands curl into the sheets.

Luca’s voice stays level. “I told you to wait downstairs.”

Sophia steps inside anyway. She has always stepped inside anyway. Her eyes travel over the wedding dress still on my body, over the way I am sitting too straight, over the faint mark I can still feel on my neck where his hand had been.

“She looks different,” Sophia says. “Did you finally decide to train her?”

The words land exactly where she wants them to. In the first life I would have absorbed them in silence. Tonight the system’s pressure and the memory of the gun collide inside my chest until something raw pushes out.

“I’m not a dog,” I say.

Both of them look at me.

Sophia’s smile does not fade. It only grows colder. “I see the quiet ones always find their voice eventually. Usually right before they learn why they should have stayed quiet.”

Luca closes the door behind her with a soft click. The sound feels final. He does not tell her to leave. He does not correct her. He simply walks back toward the bed and stops beside me, close enough that his presence feels like a wall.

The system pulses again.

[Rival presence detected.]
[New secondary objective available: Establish dominance in front of the rival.]
[Reward increased if successful.]

My pulse is racing too hard. Fear is still there, thick and familiar, but something else is rising with it. Something the system keeps feeding. I do not want to give Sophia the satisfaction of watching me shrink. I also do not want to find out what the next punishment feels like if I fail the mission completely.

Sophia moves closer. Her perfume reaches me before she does. She looks at Luca the way she always did, like I am already irrelevant.

“I came because you called,” she says to him. “Or did the wedding night change your plans?”

Luca’s hand settles on the back of my neck again. Not tight. Just present. Claiming. The contact sends another rush of system heat through me even as my stomach twists.

“My plans are not your concern tonight,” he answers.

Sophia’s eyes flick between his hand and my face. For the first time something uncertain crosses her expression.

I meet her stare and refuse to look away first.

The system counts the seconds.

And I realize the real conflict is no longer only between me and the man who once let me die.

It is between the woman I used to be and the one who is still deciding how far she is willing to go to survive him.

Chapter 12The spoon is cold in my fingers.Eight faces watch me. Giulia's smile has not changed, and her eyes still have not closed. I can feel the system waiting at the edge of my mind with its price tag.[Antidote available: 3,000 points.][Current balance: 3,150.]If I buy it, I am down to almost nothing. If I do not, I am eating poison in front of the whole family. There is a third option, and I take it before I can talk myself out of it.I put the spoon down."It looks lovely," I say. "But I couldn't possibly take the first bite."Giulia's head tilts. "It is tradition.""Then let me honor it properly." I slide the bowl across the linen toward her, slow, until it stops in front of her pearls. "You've been in this family longest, Zia Giulia. A bride should be blessed by the eldest woman at the table. Please. Eat first."The room goes very quiet.Dante's coffee cup comes down on its saucer with a small click. Marco's smile, which had frozen, thaws into something nervous. Rosalind l

Chapter 11"He said I should sleep," I answer.Luca's eyes stay on mine. He is standing in the doorway in his shirtsleeves, the cuffs undone, hair a little rumpled from a couch he clearly never lay down on.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 85%.]Fifteen percent. Salvatore did say that. It is the rest I am leaving out."And?" Luca asks."And that he was sorry to meet me at this hour." I make my voice small and tired, which is not hard. "He said it was a long time since he had seen anyone new in this house."Luca watches me for a while. Then his shoulders drop a fraction, as if he has decided to let this one go. It is not trust. It is a man picking which fight to have before sunrise."He should not be out of the vault," he says. "I will speak to the guards.""Don't."His brow lifts."If you shout at the guards, they'll know he walks." I keep my voice level. "They'll know he can. You said nobody knows he's breathing. How many people know he walks?"The silence that follows is the kind

Chapter 10I do not open the door right away.Every muscle in my body wants to run to the balcony, but the balcony is the second floor, and I have already died once tonight without finding out what a fall feels like."Who is it?" I ask. My voice is steadier than my knees.A dry chuckle comes through the wood. "You know who. You have been reading my name in your own head for the last ten minutes."[Skill 'Read Lies (Lv. 1)': No lie detected.][Warning: Second System signature approaching. Distance: 0 meters.]Zero meters. Just the thickness of a door.Luca said the old man could barely walk. Two strokes, a third that would kill him. I think about calling out for Luca, who is on a couch somewhere down the hall. Then I think about the way the voice said come back from the dead, and I understand something cold: if I shout, whatever happens next happens in front of Luca. And I do not know yet whether Luca should hear it.I open the door.Salvatore Vescari is not what I pictured. He is smal

Chapter 9I could lie. The skill would catch it, and Luca would catch me catching it.So I do the one thing I have never done in front of this man. I tell him a piece of the truth and let it stand on its own."I had a nightmare," I say. "I told you that already.""You told me a version of it.""Then here's the rest." My hands are cold, so I fold them in front of me. "In the nightmare, I left this house. You were waiting at the bottom of the stairs. You didn't shout. You didn't even look angry. You just let it happen."The ache in my spine stops climbing.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 100%.][Punishment suspended.]Luca does not move. The balcony door is still open behind him, and the night air moves the curtain against his shoulder."Let what happen?""The end of me."I watch the words land. I have spent three years studying this man's face, and I know the small tells. A muscle near his jaw. A slow blink, like he is putting something away to look at later. Right now both of them

Chapter 8I do not stay in the bed.The system hums at the edge of my mind like a held breath, and I ignore it. I slide off the mattress, lift the skirt of the wedding dress so it does not drag, and cross the room in bare feet. The door to the hallway is thick, but old houses always have gaps. I learned that in three years of listening to this place from the guest room.I press my ear to the wood."You said you would be on the couch." Sophia's voice. Low now, no performance in it. "The couch is in the other direction.""I said I would sleep. I did not say where."Luca sounds tired. I have never heard him sound tired."You told me this marriage meant nothing," Sophia says. "You told me to wait until the paperwork settled and then she would be moved out of sight. "You said fear makes people honest. Then you shouldn't be surprised when I'm honest about this. I won't be tested like a lock you're trying to pick."The system screams across my vision.[Host is refusing the mission.][Punishment imminent.][Warning: Retreat will cost points.]The ache in my spine spikes.
