Chapter 2

Author: Goodtale
I grabbed Mom by the arm and tried to pull her toward the door, but she didn't move.

"Melissa, what's gotten into you today?" She frowned at me. "You wouldn't let me leave, and now you're trying to lock the door so Keith can't come in. What are you so afraid of?"

Mom's voice started to crack. "Melissa, it's been hard raising you all these years on my own. Now that I've finally met a man who's good to both of us, why are you so against him? Do you want me to spend the rest of my life alone?"

The clock in the living room kept ticking. I frantically dragged over a little stool and climbed onto it, reaching for the lock. "Mom, lock the door! We can talk after it's locked!"

"Enough!" Mom grabbed me and pulled me back. "Melissa, can't you put yourself in my shoes for once?"

I couldn't move, and time was running out, so I lowered my head and bit down hard between her thumb and index finger.

When Mom cried out in pain and let go, I used that split second to rush for the lock. I had just touched the door as I pushed it shut when a hand suddenly shoved through the gap.

The knuckles were thick, the veins standing out. It was the same hand that had beaten Mom until her face was bruised and swollen in my last life.

The hand wedged itself between the door and the frame, stopping me from closing it. Then the door was pushed open.

Keith stood outside, dressed in a neatly pressed suit, a box of strawberry mousse in his hand. He said, "Melissa, I got some strawberry mousse just for you."

He was smiling from ear to ear, looking every bit the gentleman, just like he had in my last life, when his eyes were red as he swore his love to Mom.

I took a few steps back. "Get out!"

"What's wrong, Melissa?" Keith stepped inside, bent down, and brought the cake over to me before opening the box. "Didn't you used to love the cakes I bought you?"

I grabbed the box and slammed it onto the floor, sending the strawberry mousse spilling out into a mess of pink mush. "I don't want it! Get out of my house!"

The living room went quiet for a moment. Mom looked embarrassed and quickly crouched down with some tissues to wipe up the cream from the floor.

"Keith, don't take it personally. She dreamed you were hitting her, so she got scared. That's why she's acting like this."

Keith paused for a moment before that same gentle smile returned to his face. "Oh, a nightmare? Kids are like that. She's got quite the imagination. Just comfort her a little, and she'll be fine."

He bent down and reached out to pat my head. But I turned away, and Keith awkwardly pulled his hand back.

"Scarlett, why don't you change into another dress?" he suggested. "I'll stay here and talk to Melissa about it. Let's go get the marriage license later."

Mom looked down at the hem of her dress. Sure enough, there was a spot of cream on her white dress.

"Melissa, I'm going to change. You be good, okay?"

"Mom, don't go…"

Keith crouched down and blocked my view. "I'll stay with you here. Let your mom change her dress, okay?"

Mom's footsteps slowly faded away, and soon it was just Keith and me in the living room.

The smile slowly faded from his face. Keith lowered his voice as a malicious glint flashed across his eyes. "You little brat, you just couldn't stop making a fuss. Are you doing this on purpose just to piss me off?"

He moved half a step closer, trapping me between him and the shoe cabinet. "Go ahead. Try to stop me again."

Keith reached over with his right hand and pinched a small patch of soft flesh on the inside of my arm. He twisted it hard, making my whole arm go numb with pain.

I tried to scream, but he clamped a hand over my mouth. "Your mom has to marry me today, no matter what. If you dare say another word, I'll deal with you first, then her. You hear me?"

Then Keith let go and pretended to feed me the cake. "Melissa, is it good?"

I would've been too scared to say another word in the past, but now, things were different.

I screamed, "Mom, Keith hit me!"

Mom texted back, "Where are you? Can you talk?"All they sent back was a location. It was an apartment complex about six miles from my house. Then their profile picture suddenly disappeared, and no more messages came through.Mom put down her phone and looked at me. "They stopped responding after sending the location."I put down my cutlery. "Someone must've taken away their phone. Let's call the cops."The officers arrived 15 minutes later. The apartment complex was old and run-down, with alleyways that were so complicated that even delivery drivers got lost.An officer glanced at the GPS. "The area's too big. We'll have to go door to door.""I'll go," I offered, looking up."You?""I'll just say my cat is missing. I'm a kid. Me going from house to house won't raise suspicion. But an adult would put them on guard. I'll put my phone in my pocket with the call still running. You can listen in."The officer hesitated for a moment, then nodded. No one answered at the first build

The interview was held in a small studio on the ground floor of the TV station. The host was a short-haired woman in her 30s named Sara Bale. She leaned forward slightly as she spoke, keeping her voice low, as if she were afraid of scaring me.Sara started with a few simple questions, like how old I was, what grade I was in, and what my favourite foods were.I answered them one by one.Sara nodded, then got to the real subject. "How did you know something was wrong with that man that day? What did you notice that made you try to stop your mom from getting married to him?"I sat there for a moment before answering, "It was because I had a bad dream."Sara froze. "Oh, a nightmare?""I dreamed that he beat up my mom every day after she married him. I was so scared that the first thing I did when I woke up was try to stop Mom from getting married."The studio was enveloped in a momentary silence. Sara looked conflicted, like she didn't know what to make of it.Mom, who was sitting

Getting approval to move into the military housing was a lot stricter than I'd expected.Mom made copies of her ID and the documents proving Grandma was her mother, along with a background check and the police report. Then she handed the whole stack over to the security desk.A middle-aged man in plain clothes was in charge of the review. He asked, "Whom are you living with?""My mom, Dorothy Tate.""Which building?""Building 7, Unit 2.""Go home and wait for the notice. You should hear back within three business days."Mom wanted to file her resignation during that period."Mom, I want to tag along." I jumped off the couch and grabbed Mom's hand.Mom paused for a second, then smiled. "Are you scared I'm going to disappear again, as I did in your nightmare?"I nodded."Alright, come with me then."I headed straight to HR with Mom, and she instructed, "Wait here for me. Don't run off.""Okay." I sat on the couch in the waiting area. Two of Mom's coworkers walked past with

I looked up at the officer. My voice shook, but I kept talking. "They dragged Mom and me into a car. Our suitcases are still there."Keith's smile froze as he stared at me, his composure slowly crumbling. "You fucking…"He jerked forward, and his handcuffs slammed against the armrest of the interrogation chair with a loud clang. The officer beside him pushed him back down. "Sit still!""What the hell are you talking about? What security cameras? There aren't any cameras in that alley…"The older officer already stood up, his walkie-talkie in hand. "Joe, pull this morning's security footage from the alley by the west entrance of Bay Garden."Keith went quiet. Bradley opened his mouth a couple of times, but not a word came out.It took less than 20 minutes to pull up the footage. The screen showed a gray, washed-out alley, with concrete underfoot and a metal gate at the end. Mom and I appeared at the edge of the frame, and Keith and Bradley came charging in right behind us.Keith

Bradley's expression changed drastically, and he backed up. "Don't listen to the kid!" He waved his hands, panic creeping into his voice. "Kids don't know what they're talking about! I don't have anything on me!"He turned and ran for the entrance. His dress shoe slipped on the marble floor. He stumbled into the doorframe, caught himself, then pushed open the glass doors and ran.The younger officer reacted fast. He chased after him. "Stop! Don't run!"The other officer stepped forward and grabbed Keith, pushing him against the counter. "You stay right here, too." The smile dropped from Keith's face. The officer turned to Mom. "You two need to come to the station and give a statement."Mom nodded, tears still clinging to her face, but her voice was calm now. "Okay."She turned to the clerk behind the counter. "Cancel the whole thing. I'm not getting married.""Please cancel it." Grandma looked at the clerk too."Why not?" Keith yelled, dropping his act.The officer gave Ke

Grandma came in with her cane, looking around until she saw me.Everyone in the lobby fell silent. The clerk hurried over. "Hello. Can I help you?""We're the police." The lead officer held up his badge. "We got a call. Someone's being forced to get married at knifepoint."The clerk looked stunned. "But this is a government office."The officer looked over at Mom, still filling out the marriage paperwork.Bradley's hand dropped from my shoulder. He bent down close to me, sounding panicked. "Did you fucking call the cops?"I screamed with all the strength I had. "Officer! They kidnapped my mom! They're forcing her to get married at knifepoint! My mom doesn't want to marry him! Please save my mom!"My voice cracked, and tears blurred my vision."Melissa, come here." Grandma came over and pulled me into her arms.Bradley struggled for a moment, refusing to let go."Let her go." Grandma tapped her cane against the floor. The officer stepped behind her, and Bradley finally let me
