Chapter 2

Author: Triple Threat
Zoe leaned down, giving me a helpless smile. "Sweetie, I'm not a bad person. As soon as Alex finishes his milk, I'll bring him right back to you, okay?"

I shook my head wildly, refusing to budge. "No! Alex can't leave. I have to keep my eyes on him!"

In my past life, it was precisely because Dad and I didn't keep a constant eye on Alex that the villain managed to snatch him away.

So this time, I was never letting him out of my sight.

I spread my arms wide, shielding Mom's hospital bed, refusing to yield no matter what Zoe said.

Dad frowned. "Since Ava's against it, let's delay the feeding a bit. Come back in five minutes."

He then crouched down and ran a hand through my hair. "And Ava, Alex has to drink his milk, or he'll get sick. No more throwing tantrums later, alright?"

Looking at Dad's gentle face, I was reminded of the day I lost both my parents in my past life. All the longing and fear I'd carried welled up, and tears streamed down my cheeks.

I buried my face in his chest, clutching his shirt as I sobbed. "The nurse is a bad person! Don't let her take Alex away!"

Dad's face hardened instantly, and he cast a questioning glance at Zoe.

The latter's face drained of color for a second before her eyes turned red. "Ava, why would you say that?

"I worked so hard to pass the exams and become a nurse here. How could I be a bad person? Are you just lying and framing me because you don't want to be separated from Alex? Mr. Hardy, don't you think so too?"

She stared at Dad, looking utterly wronged, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.

Though Dad still had his doubts, Zoe's words seemed to make sense.

She was an officially hired nurse, and I was just a three-year-old child.

He couldn't very well label a nurse as malicious based solely on a toddler's words.

He looked down to soothe me. "Don't be scared, Ava. I'm here. I'll protect you both."

He turned back to Zoe with an apologetic look. "She's just a child and doesn't know any better. Please don't take it to heart."

A faint curve touched the corner of Zoe's mouth as she put on a generous front. "It's alright. I forgive her."

With that, she quickly hurried around to the other side of the bed, reaching her hand out toward the mattress.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I grew frantic.

Just then, Dad's voice rang out. "Still, my daughter has a point. Please feed him right here. There's no need to take him next door."

At his words, Zoe's hand froze inches from the swaddle. A brief flicker of annoyance flashed in her eyes.

She turned to him and explained logically, "Mr. Hardy, your wife just gave birth and needs her rest. Feeding the baby in here will disturb her. It's really better if I take him next door. It's much more convenient. Besides…"

She let out a bitter, helpless sigh. "You are a VIP guest at our hospital, while I'm just a new nurse. If the head nurse finds out I didn't follow proper procedure to take care of your wife and baby… I might… lose my job…"

Her explanation sounded flawless, and when she mentioned the head nurse, her eyes filled with just the right touch of anxiety and dread.

Seeing that look, Dad relented as expected.

He tried to negotiate with me. "Ava, let her take Alex to feed him, okay? It'll only take a moment."

I shook my head, my tiny hands gripping the edge of the bed so tightly my knuckles turned white.

Dad turned back to Zoe. "Ms. Scott, I'll explain things to your head nurse for you. You can just feed him here."

Zoe bit her lip, tears finally spilling over. "Mr. Hardy, please don't make things difficult for me…"

Dad frowned, his demeanor turning cold. He seemed to feel Zoe was being rather ungrateful.

Just as he was about to dismiss her, Mom stirred awake. "Dariel, what's going on?"

Dad filled her in on everything that had just happened.

Stay with me!"Every single time, I'd get a headache, while Dad just stood by, chuckling. "Alex, let go."Alex immediately pouted. "No!"Smiling, Mom picked him up in her arms. "Ava has to go to school. She'll be back this evening."Al

He has such an extraordinary sister."The relatives crowded around, showering me with praise."Ava, you're amazing!""You're a little hero!"Feeling shy from all the compliments, I hid my face in Mom's arms.Mom kissed my forehead softly. Zoe stared at me fiercely. Her gaze carried a tangled mix of emotions—hatred, fear, and sheer unwillingness to accept defeat."It's all because of you! If it weren't for you, I would have pulled it off. How on earth did a three-year-old child figure it out?"Dad's grip tightened around me.I blinked up at Zoe. "Because bad people have a stinky smell on them."Dad looked down at me, a flash of deep heartache cutting across his eyes.Zoe, however, completely unraveled. "I had it all planned out! Aunt Martha was going to take the baby away, and I was going to stay at the hospital so nobody would ever suspect me."Once the heat died down, I'd leave Jerandale. I'd give the baby a new name, and I'd tell him that I saved him. When he grew up, I'd bring him back. And by then, the Hardy family would have no choice but to compensate me! Why couldn't I get what I wanted?"Dad's gaze turned as cold as a blade. "Because he is not your tool. He is my son. He is the child Elise carried for nin

The hospital director's face turned as white as paper.I knew Dad wasn't just making empty threats. The Hardy family never bullied anyone, but we would never show mercy to anyone who tried to hurt our family.By noon that day, the story of the stolen newborn at the hospital hit the news.At first, people online were criticizing us, claiming rich folks were making a mountain out of a molehill, that nurses were just everyday working people, and that a three-year-old child's words couldn't be taken seriously. However, the official police report was released shortly after.Zoe and Martha were facing charges for child trafficking, unlawful drugging, and tampering with hospital security equipment. The hospital staff were also implicated in the crimes. All the online backlash vanished in an instant, replaced by a wave of public apologies."My goodness, the baby was only a day old!""That sister is brilliant!""A three-year-old saved her whole family.""Everyone who was bad-mouthing

Upon hearing the news, Mom held Alex tightly and sobbed for a long time.Dad sat by her side, reassuring her over and over again. "It's over now. Everything's okay."But I knew Mom was scared out of her mind. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking, and she couldn't even hold a glass of water steady.Dad replaced the entire staff on the floor. The original nurses, janitors, and security guards were all placed under investigation. He also called Grandpa to bring the family's bodyguards over. When Grandpa arrived, he was shaking so badly he could barely hold his cane steady. The second he stepped through the door, he pulled me into his arms. "Ava, were you scared?"I shook my head, but the moment I opened my mouth, tears spilled over. "Grandpa, Alex almost got lost."Grandpa's eyes turned red, too. "He's not lost. You're amazing, Ava. You saved Alex."He walked over to Mom's bed and looked down at Alex in his swaddle. His hands trembled uncontrollably. "As long as the baby is back safe…

Dad dropped to his knees and pulled me into his arms. "Ava… I almost lost you all."I wiped away his tears with my tiny hands. "You didn't lose anyone. I found Alex! From now on, we'll watch over him together."Dad pulled me into a tight hug, squeezing so hard that it almost hurt. But I didn't struggle because I knew he was truly terrified. The police arrested Zoe and Martha. Before leaving, Zoe was still crying and looking at Dad through her tears. "Mr. Hardy, I was wrong! I wasn't in my right mind… My family is so poor! I just wanted a better life! The baby isn't hurt, so please, spare me!"The warmth in Dad's eyes was completely gone. "The baby isn't hurt? He was born just yesterday! Yet you stuffed him into a laundry cart, crammed gauze into his mouth, and drugged me. And now you're telling me he isn't hurt?"Zoe sobbed even harder. "I truly never meant to hurt him! I only wanted to take him away! I would have raised him well!"Those words sent an icy chill straight through
