My head was hurting by the time I woke up again. The room was dimly lit, and the machines were making noises around me. I wanted to tell them to shut it off so badly, but I couldn't. Nothing was more tiring than waking up to white bedsheets wrapped around my torso.
I had come to the hospital for treatment. At least that's what Damon, my husband had been telling me the whole time. I was told that I was involved in an accident that I couldn't remember for some reason. After I woke up, I had been stuck to the hospital bed, unable to move, with no memory coming forth.
Damon was my husband, Alpha of Rockwood pack. Things had been strained between the both of us, and I was being blamed by the whole pack for not being able to give him a child the whole time. Damon was more than understanding, and we were both going to seek treatment. I just had to get out of the hospital first. I didn't even mind adopting a pup.
I tried to focus on anything except the beeping beside me. I heard raised voices right outside my door, and I strained my ear to listen.
“We can't keep her here for long,” a voice said, and I recognized it immediately. It was Lila, my twin sister.
“Then what do you want me to do?” Damon asked, and I felt the tears prick my eyes. They were worried about me, and it wasn't going to be long until I became some kind of burden.
“We have to get rid of her soon. Even the doctors are tired of injecting her. The bitch refused to die.”
I frowned immediately. I couldn't be hearing properly.
“What if the pack begins to suspect? She might have been in and out of slumbers the whole time, but I can't have them accusing me of anything.”
“Don't you want us to be together?” Lila asked, lowering her voice. There was a muffled answer from Damon. “We have been hiding this for long, Damon. And I'm tired of hiding. I want to be the Luna as you have always promised.”
“You don't have to worry,” Lila continued. “Once the poison takes effect, no one wills suspect a thing. You just have to keep playing broken husband for a while.”
What?
This was some kind of sick joke, right? I waited for the both of the to burst out laughing at how funny Lila was. But there was no laughter.
The silence was deafening as I felt my heart break into a thousand and one pieces. This was a man that I had spent my life with. I loved him with everything in me. I didn't even want to think about how much Lila meant to me at that point. She was literally my everything. I would give her my life without even thinking twice. And this is what I get?
I looked around, looking for any way to escape. I tried getting up, but I couldn't even do that. My hands were laying helplessly at my side, and I was already panicking.
The door slowly swung open, making me freeze in fear. The both of them walked in. Lila had her head cocked to the side, showing off her sharper features that people always awed about. She was putting on a white dress that I had gotten for her. Her hands were behind her, and she didn't take her eyes off me as her lips slowly widened into a cold smile.
“Were you awake this whole time?” She asked in a high pitched sweet tone that made my stomach turn.
My gaze was fixed on Damon, who didn't even want to look at me. I opened my mouth to ask Lila the thousand questions that were running through my mind, but the words were stuck in my throat. The only thing I could feel was my hurting chest, and the tears that were running through the sides of my face.
Lila clicked her tongue as she sat down beside me. “How are you feeling?” She asked, and I blinked rapidly, holding on to any last hope that I was dreaming. That I didn't just hear what I heard a few minutes ago.
“What I heard… was it true?” I asked, finally mustering the words. That was enough to make Damon turn to look at me.
He walked over to my side of the bed. “Get rid of her already!” He screamed, and I felt an even sharper pain in my chest.
“Why?” I asked, with my lips quivering. I knew everything that we had both been through. Yes, our relationship was strained. But we were more than willing to fix things.
“You stole everything from me,” Lila whispered, with her face slowly turning dark. “You took everything that I was supposed to have. My positions in school, the perfect hair, Damon, this pack. How much more will you take from me? You didn't just expect me to sit back and wait until you kill me, did you?”
I opened my mouth to remind her of the times when I shared all I had with her. But she quickly placed her index finger on my lips, silencing me.
“You don't have to worry, it's going to be quick.”
She slowly pulled down the sheets covering one of my arm, and I tried to move my limbs. I could barely feel them. I grunted, and that only made Lila laugh.
“Oh, are you adorable,” she whispered, as Damon reached behind her, slowly slipping the syringe that was behind Lila the whole time into my arm.
I could feel my heartbeat increase, and the monitors beside me beeped even faster and louder.
Lila stood up, walking over to where Damon was, and she slowly crashed her lips against his, with her eyes still fixed on me as I started jerking against the bed. The bed rattled and tears were still flowing down the sides of my face and into the pillow.
“You deserved it, Luna.” Lila said, and I stopped jerking, with my face turned to the side, right towards the window.
“Your time isn't over, child,” I heard someone whisper.
The machine beside me stopped beeping, sliding into a continuous strained sound. The moon was shining brightly on my face, and I couldn't look away.
I felt my eyes close, and my world slowly went quiet.
Luna's POV. Something was terribly wrong. It had been days since I started living here as Alara. I still didn't know what I was supposed to do, but Alara's mate didn't come to see me like he would do for his mate who just returned after a few years. He was even more cold towards me. But that gave me time to learn more about Alara. She was the opposite of me. She was bold, charming, and a people person. “Do you remember anything before you went missing?” I asked, and she was silent for a while. It was nice having someone that I could talk to in my head. At least she kept me company while the others left me to heal. “Nothing,” she whispered. She was weak, and so was I. My feet that were injured in the woods hadn't healed yet. That wasn't normal. A knock came at the door, and I sat up. “Come in,” I said loud enough, and the person walked in. It was a young girl dressed in a maid's uniform. She held a small tray in her hand, giving me the widest smile I've ever seen anyone give. I di
Ryder's PovShe wasn't Alara. I could tell from across the room. Everything was the same. From her features, to her scent. It was even more overpowering. But something was wrong. The way she looked at me. The chills that I could feel emanating from her. I could smell the fear all over her. Alara would never be scared of me.“Ryder!” Someone called out, and I couldn't help but frown. Thyri was the only one that would call my by my name, and I was avoiding her more than anything. She was the last person that I wanted around me. “What is it this time?” I asked, and she pouted, cocking her head to the side. Her rich brat attitude was starting to get to me, and I didn't know how long it was going to be until I lost my cool. “Acting like that when you just sent me from sealing an alliance isn't right, you know. I definitely deserve some kind of appreciation.”“You just played a part in the pack. It's nothing special. I could have sent someone else in your place.”She seemed hurt for a se
Luna's POVI remained frozen in the bathroom, refusing to say a word. I was forced to open, when someone softly knocked. A petite woman with similar blonde hair smiled at me, and I was forced to think if she was somehow related to Alara- this person that I was supposed to be living as. I didn't know who had the voice in my head, and I wanted to just know more about it. Only if I had some more time alone. “I'm glad nothing happened to you,” the woman said, touching my cheek. I was forced to smile, compensating for the flinch that I did reflexively.“You don't have to worry,” she whispered. “The other pack members want to meet you. Just like me, they are having a hard time believing that you have returned, completely untouched.”She took my hand, leading me outside the room. That was when I felt the pain in my feet, from when I was in the woods. It was already wrapped up and bandaged perfectly. “What's your name?” I asked, and she frowned. “Diane,” she ended up saying. She slowly p
Luna's POV “You have to live a life that isn't yours, for the moon goddess has granted you a second chance. There will be turmoils, and there will be troubles. But they are all tests.”“Luna!” Someone screamed in my head, andI frowned, with my eyes still closed. The voice in my head seemed like a dream. I remembered talking to someone that seemed like a light. She was pretty, with white hair. She spoke about a second chance. Something pricked my shoulder, and droplets of liquid landed on my head in sync. That forced me to get up immediately. My eyes were wide, taking in my surroundings. I was in…the woods. But that was the least of my problems. I was alive. I ran my hands through my cold skin, with my heart beating rapidly in my chest. I was wrapped in damp rags, and my hair was sticking to my face. What happened to the hospital gown? That was where I died, right? The memory of everything that happened at the hospital came back slowly, and I couldn't get past the thought that D
