Savannah Nichols opened the door and stepped into the dark room, reaching out to flip the switch. Instantly, the room lit up.
She lifted her eyes toward the old, worn-out bed and curled her lips into a cruel smile.
On the bed, Sigourney Nichols lay writhing in agony and pain.
She kept struggling to break free from the two shackles tightly clamping her wrists, but with her current frail strength, it was utterly impossible.
Her eyes, filled with resentment, glared at her younger sister as if she wanted to devour her alive.
She never imagined that the person she loved most, the one closest to her, would be the very one to bring her to this wretched state.
Savannah closed the door and slowly approached the bed. She reached out, pulled away the cloth gagging Sigourney's mouth, then calmly dragged a chair nearby and sat down.
"Cough... A..." Sigourney coughed violently, choked with rage.
Savannah placed a glass cup on the bedside table, then gripped Sigourney's chin firmly, lifting it up.
"Sister, why don't you know how to stay in your place?"
Despite her dire situation, despite her utter helplessness to resist, Sigourney steadied herself and responded coldly:
"You bitch! I don't have a sister like you!"
Her eyes welled up, turning red, but she forced herself not to shed tears.
Because only now, too late, did she finally realise-the sweet, affectionate little sister who always clung to her, the one she trusted completely-this was her true face. And in return for that trust, this was the outcome she received?
That all-too-familiar innocent smile once again appeared on Savannah's deceitful face.
"I've been taking such good care of you for a whole month, yet every day you keep cursing me like this?"
Good care? What a joke. Sigourney let out a derisive chuckle and turned her face away.
After deceiving her into getting a divorce, Savannah orchestrated Sigourney's supposed "death" and imprisoned her here.
Of course, by now, no one knew she was still alive. Over a month had passed-surely, her grave was covered in green grass by now.
Every day, she received Savannah's so-called "care"-meals even dogs wouldn't touch.
Various dishes, ranging from raw meat to rotting flesh, from vegetables left out for two or three nights until they became slimy and reeked of a putrid stench.
That was what Sigourney had been forced to eat for the past month.
And that wasn't all.
Her delicate body was now covered in bruises and wounds, black and blue patches marring her skin.
The bed she lay on was electrically charged-so with every meal, she had to endure an extra "dessert" of bone-deep convulsions.
Escape was impossible. Even suicide was out of the question. The only thing she could do was grit her teeth and endure.
This would end. It had to end.
But the ending awaiting Sigourney would be more wretched than any miserable fate she could have imagined.
And her "dear little sister" had never once let her go hungry. How... very "thoughtful" of her.
Savannah reached for the glass on the table, gently swirling it so that whatever was inside could dissolve more quickly.
"Today, you won't be under my care anymore. Are you sad, sister?"
Sigourney froze. She had already guessed what Savannah intended to do, and she struggled even harder.
"You can't do this... Aren't you afraid of retribution?"
"Haaa... If I were afraid, then by now, you'd be happily living with your husband. Oh, wait-no. He's about to become my husband. Should I thank you for being so stupid?"
Yesterday, Sigourney had been forced to agree to Savannah's demand. That was the reason she had suffered through over a month of torture, teetering between life and death.
She had to sign over all her inheritance rights to Savannah. Of course, she refused at first-hence her current miserable state.
But just yesterday, she had no choice but to yield to save her mother.
All the suffering she had endured over the past month had been in vain.
Sigourney and Savannah were half-sisters. Savannah was the daughter of their father's concubine, so the inheritance she received after their father's passing was nothing compared to even one per cent of what Sigourney owned.
Savannah pulled out a pre-prepared document from the drawer. It was fully written out, only missing one thing-Sigourney's signature.
One of the shackles was unlocked. Sigourney clenched the pen tightly, hesitating, unwilling to sign.
"Look here."
Seeing Sigourney's hesitation, Savannah turned on a video call and held the phone up before her.
A heart-wrenching scream echoed through the room.
Sigourney thrashed wildly and screamed in panic:
"Mom!! You beast, let my mother go!"
"If you don't sign, I'm afraid she won't live much longer."
Without hesitation, Sigourney quickly scrawled her signature. Savannah picked up the document, scanning it with satisfaction before smirking.
Then she lifted the phone, and her truly sinister voice finally rang out:
"Kill her."
The call ended in a split second.
Sigourney's entire body jolted. She went mad with rage.
"You lied to me! I'll kill you!"
"If the mother is dead, then the daughter shouldn't be alive either. Don't you think?"
With that, Savannah poured the glass of liquid into Sigourney's mouth, gripping her jaw tightly so not a single drop of poison could spill out.
After a final agonizing struggle, Sigourney's hands slowly went limp.
Certain that she was dead, Savannah turned away and walked out, but not without a final glance.
After all, her sister had always treated her well.
If there was anything to blame, just blame Sigourney always had been luckier than her.
"Goodbye."
With the uneasy weight of the afternoon still upon them, Sigourney and Theodore hailed a taxi to return to Twilight Estate. They had thought matters were gradually settling down, but reality proved that perhaps they had relaxed their vigilance too soon. The moment they entered the car, an inexplicable sense of unease lingered, even though the driver appeared kind and honest. That feeling only seemed to intensify as the vehicle rolled steadily onto the main road.Theodore and Sigourney exchanged wary glances, their nerves instinctively sharpening, as if bracing for whatever was about to unfold. The taxi glided along at a stable speed, smooth and unwavering. But suddenly, the driver spoke, his tone laced with confusion."Sir, Madam, is the person driving behind you a friend or relative of yours?""I have the impression that the gray car back there is following us."At those words, both Theodore and Sigourney heightened their vigilance, eyes flicking to the rearview mirror. Indeed, a my
"At present, my car is severely damaged. I'm worried it would be dangerous to continue driving.""I'm calling the vehicle service now, so they can come check and repair it for me."Because Theodore had the call on speakerphone, Sigourney clearly heard every word. She instinctively shivered. She couldn't imagine what might have happened if she and Theodore had been in that car.For some reason, hearing this news sparked a sudden thought in Theodore. He asked immediately,"What happened to the driver of the black car?"Their driver quickly replied,"The black car, after striking mine, was forcefully knocked back and directly collided with another white car.""The collision was severe. The driver of the black car struck the steering wheel directly, bleeding profusely.""He's unconscious now.""I called the traffic police to handle the situation, and an ambulance for him."Theodore's gaze met Sigourney's, and in that moment, they both understood the thoughts running through each other's
Once everything was packed, their private driver was already waiting at the hospital gates. Theodore carefully supported Sigourney down the steps, seating her gently in the back, every movement tender and deliberate.Yet just as the driver was about to pull away, Sigourney suddenly felt a sharp, wrenching pain in her abdomen. She doubled over like a boiled shrimp, her face turning pale as she whispered weakly to Theodore."Wait, my stomach hurts so much.""Could you take me back to the hospital?"Seeing her collapse in agony so suddenly, Theodore was thrown into utter panic. Without hesitation, he scooped her into his arms and rushed back inside the hospital.Their belongings were already stored in the trunk, and with the car inconveniently parked, Theodore quickly instructed the driver to head to Twilight Estate, where Mrs. Miller would bring everything inside for them. With that settled, Theodore hurried inside, carrying Sigourney tightly against his chest. By now, her face had turn
"That night, Dante intended to sneak into your hospital room to harm you and Mrs. Nichols. He even had a knife concealed on his person.""But fortunately, the room was password-protected. He didn't know it, so he couldn't get in.""Nevertheless, you two must remain vigilant.""Right now, during the investigation, we've lost Dante's trail. We don't know where he is."Hearing Sutton's words, Theodore's gaze darkened, his eyes narrowing with menace. Of course, he understood Sutton's implication.Dante was surely still lurking somewhere nearby, plotting another scheme to harm him and Sigourney. And with Sigourney's frail health at the moment, he had to be more vigilant than ever.Theodore slowly clenched his fist, his voice hoarse as he spoke."Alright, thank you for informing me of this. I'll be more careful.""And don't forget, keep narrowing the search. Find Dante's whereabouts as soon as possible and hand him over to the police."Otherwise, both he and Sigourney would be forced to liv
After the injection of the tocolytic, perhaps from sheer exhaustion or the effect of the medicine itself, Sigourney drifted into a weary slumber on the bed. The female doctor, seeing this, calmly reassured Theodore that it was a normal response and nothing to be alarmed about. Then, in a gentle tone, she continued her reminders."Your wife does not need to be transferred to a separate obstetric ward for close monitoring at the moment.""She may remain here in the same room with you, but she must avoid moving around as much as possible. Above all, she must not be subjected to tension or stress."The doctor added softly,"Should she display any unusual symptoms such as prolonged abdominal pain or unstable blood pressure, press the emergency button at once so I can come and help stabilize her condition."Because Sigourney's health was in a precarious state, Theodore listened with the utmost care. Once she had finished speaking, the female doctor arranged for Sigourney to receive an IV d
"She suddenly suffered sharp abdominal pain. Please help me check her condition."The elderly male doctor swiftly moved to examine Sigourney, while a nurse dashed back out to summon an obstetrician with more specialized expertise. In the meantime, the male doctor carefully guided Sigourney to lie flat on the bed, preventing her from curling up in a way that might endanger the child. Then, he began measuring her blood pressure and checking her basic vital signs.Throughout the entire process, Theodore's gaze never left her, his heart pounding with unbearable anxiety. At this moment, Sigourney was drenched in cold sweat, her whole body icy to the touch as she lay weakly slumped against the bed, her soft hair spilling loose around her.She clutched her abdomen again and again, crying out in pain, pleading faintly with the doctors to save her child."Stay calm, take a deep breath.""Try to lie flat. Don't curl your stomach, or it will press against the baby inside..."The doctor, though st
As for Sigourney, she wasn't particularly surprised that Mark hadn't returned to the corporation all day. After all, that was just his nature: whenever faced with trouble, he would avoid it.But there are matters one cannot simply escape from. He would still have to bear the consequences afterward.
Sigourney hesitated as she looked at Theodore, for she hadn't expected Richard to suddenly make such a proposal. But Theodore only gave a gentle smile and softened his tone."It's fine. If you want to hug, then go ahead, just consider it a friendly embrace with Richard.""I'm not so petty as to get
The innocent look in Sigourney's eyes made Richard reluctant to leave. Yet he still continued,"I came here not only to inform you, but also... to say goodbye.""That's why I broke protocol and came to your corporation during working hours like this."Richard sighed as he explained, his voice turni
The atmosphere was suffocating with tension.Lucas glared at Theodore with sharp vigilance, afraid he might seize the chance to strike, so he tightened his grip on Sigourney until she could hardly breathe.A glint flashed in Theodore's eyes as he slowly bent down, picking up the gun from the ground
