Chapter 2

Author: Julian Cross
Walking out of the hospital gates, the blinding sunlight forced me to squint slightly.

Although the luxury penthouse was Chloe’s pre-marital property, my name had been officially added to the deed after our marriage. Before the legal title transfer could be finalized, there was a sufficient time gap for me to exploit.

I immediately contacted a loan shark who had spent years operating in the legal gray market.

“A three-hundred-square-meter penthouse downtown, market value over twenty million,” I said, slamming a copy of the property deed onto the desk, my tone absolute. “I only need eight million. I want the funds disbursed today.”

The broker stared at me, his eyes lighting up with greed. “Mr. Mercer, you’re a straightforward man, but the interest rates on a rush job like this…”

“Calculate the interest at your maximum allowable rate. I don’t care,” I interrupted coldly.

Chloe would be the one stuck paying it back anyway. Even if the interest rates skyrocketed into the stratosphere, it had absolutely nothing to do with me.

Aside from mortgaging the penthouse, I maxed out every single credit card under my name and squeezed the absolute maximum limits out of dozens of online lending platforms. In just a day and a half, I amassed nearly ten million in cash. Every cent of this staggering, ruinous debt was tied entirely to the penthouse and registered under Chloe’s name.

With the funding secured, I tracked down a top-tier security firm.

Taking advantage of the window where Chloe took Boyd to a high-end restaurant to celebrate their “newfound freedom,” I led the technicians straight into the penthouse.

“The master bedroom, living room, kitchen, hallways, and bathrooms—I want every blind spot covered,” I commanded, pointing to various corners of the apartment.

Under the guise of “inspecting the smart-home wiring system,” the workers installed over a dozen microscopic pinhole cameras equipped with independent backup power supplies. These cameras boasted extremely high resolution, night vision, and crystal-clear audio tracking.

I wanted to make sure that when the apocalypse dawned, I would have a 360-degree view to appreciate every angle of this vile couple’s desperate struggle.

Once the installation was finished, I drove straight out to the suburbs.

In my past life, I had heard rumors about an underground fallout bunker tucked away on a mountainside, originally built by a bankrupt billionaire. I used a massive stack of cash to open the broker’s tightly sealed mouth and successfully signed a ten-year lease contract.

Pushing open the heavy, titanium-alloy blast door of the bunker, the anxiety that had been weighing on my chest finally dissipated.

This place was a sanctuary tailor-made for the end of the world.

Spanning five hundred square meters, it featured an independent internal air filtration system, a deep groundwater well, a massive solar power array, and even a climate-controlled hydroponic greenhouse.

For the next forty-eight hours, I transformed into an tireless, consuming machine. I systematically cleared out the warehouses of three major supermarkets.

Fifty sacks of premium rice, thirty bags of flour, two hundred cases of various canned meats, one hundred cases of dehydrated vegetables, and fifty cases of high-calorie chocolates and survival rations. As for drinking water, I ordered five hundred barrels directly, hauling them into the bunker alongside ten heavy-duty water purification units.

Beyond food, medicine was the rarest, hardest currency in the apocalypse. I cleaned out five pharmacies, stockpiling antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, febrifuges, and painkillers, as well as various first-aid kits and surgical instruments.

Finally, I paid a visit to the black market, securing three military-grade compound crossbows, thousands of hardened steel bolts, two machetes, and a set of stab-proof tactical gear.

As the final shipment of supplies was moved into the bunker, the heavy blast doors slowly sealed shut.

I sat back on the sofa and exhaled a long, deep sigh of relief.

Right then, the giant monitoring screen on the wall flickered to life. On the display, Chloe and Boyd were walking into the penthouse, carrying armfuls of luxury shopping bags, looking completely on top of the world.

“Chloe, that sucker is finally gone! This place is entirely ours now!” Boyd laughed triumphantly, wrapping his arms around Chloe from behind without a care in the world.

Chloe leaned back into his embrace, greed dancing in her eyes. “That’s because he’s a fool. Once I liquidate this property, I’ll take you overseas to get a top-tier kidney transplant, and we can finally live the good life.”

Sitting in the safety chair of my fortress, I casually wiped down the cold, menacing edge of a machete.

Watching the despicable couple on the screen fantasize about their future, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

The countdown had begun. Only twelve hours left.

Following Chloe’s brutal demise, the horde in the corridor did not disperse. After consuming every shred of her flesh, dozens of zombies continued to linger right outside the luxury penthouse. They could smell it—the unmistakable scent of a living human drifting through the narrow gaps of the frame.Thud! Thud! Thud! The monsters began throwing their bodies frantically against the entrance. While the lock on this twenty-million-dollar high-rise was admittedly top-tier, it had received zero maintenance over the past thirty days, and its structural integrity had already been compromised by Chloe’s frantic battering. Under the relentless, day-and-night pounding of dozens of zombies, the metal finally let out an overwhelmed, screeching groan of structural failure.Crash—!With a thunderous roar, the heavy security door collapsed entirely, slamming violently down onto the marble tile of the foyer.A shaft of weak light from the hallway cut into the apartment, illuminating a space that

Chloe’s desperate howling echoed relentlessly through the dead silence of the corridor. She used her blood-soaked hands to slam frantically against the luxury penthouse’s security door. “Boyd! Open up! Open the damn door! I’ve been bitten—save me!” Chloe shrieked at the top of her lungs, her fingernails scraping against the reinforced iron, leaving jagged, crimson streaks in their wake.Inside the apartment.Boyd leaned against the foyer wall, his face turned completely ghostly pale as he listened to Chloe’s piercing screams and the violent banging on the door. Yet, his hands never once reached for the handle. Instead, he clamped both palms tightly over his own mouth, his eyes flickering with an unstable mix of paralyzing terror and absolute selfishness.“Open the door! Boyd! You piece of shit! I only went out there for your sake—how dare you lock me out?!” Chloe cursed maniacally from the hallway.Instead of yielding, Boyd dragged his bloated legs backward, inch by inch, retreati

Under the aggressive erosion of the virus and the violent stimulation of her near-death experience, a seal buried deep within her consciousness suddenly shattered. Countless fragments of a life that did not belong to this timeline flashed through her mind like a chaotic cinematic reel.It was the memory of her past life. She saw the first day of the apocalypse, where I had risked infection, charging downstairs with a baseball bat to scavenge a backpack full of food from the supermarket. She saw the days when water and food ran bone-dry, where I had forced the last half-bottle of water and a piece of moldy bread into her hands, while I grew so depleted from starvation I could barely stand. She saw the exact moment the zombies smashed through the barricade, where I had stood at the absolute front wielding a blade, screaming at the top of my lungs for her to take Boyd and run. However, the final frame of the memory froze on a cold, metallic security door.It froze on the image of he

Outside the heavy security door of the luxury penthouse. The emergency lights in the hallway had long since died from the power outage. The entire corridor was plunged into pitch-black darkness, and the air was thick with a sickening cocktail of putrid decay and the copper reek of fresh blood.Chloe leaned her back against the freezing concrete wall, her heart hammering frantically against her ribs as her legs shook uncontrollably from a mix of sheer terror and near-fatal starvation. Swallowing hard, her hands white-knuckled the kitchen knife. Guided only by the eerie, faint green glow of the emergency exit sign, she shuffled toward the elevator lobby one agonized step at a time.Crunch... Crunch...The sickening, wet sound of grinding teeth echoed from around the corner.Chloe froze entirely, cautiously poking half of her head past the drywall to look. There, right in front of the elevator doors, a zombie in a shredded business suit was crouching over a mutilated, unrecognizable

The twenty-fifth day of the apocalypse. The last single drop of water inside the luxury penthouse had officially run dry. Over the past several days, they had managed to drag out their wretched survival by rationing the stagnant water left inside the toilet tanks. Now, even the muddy grime coating the bottom of the tanks had been licked entirely clean. If they didn’t venture out to scavenge for food and water, they would die of absolute dehydration within two days at most.Chloe leaned weakly against the corner of the room, her hand white-knuckling a kitchen knife as her cold, calculative gaze drifted over Boyd.“Boyd, let’s face it. Your body isn’t going to last much longer anyway,” she muttered, her voice hollow. “Why don’t you go out first? Make some noise in the hallway to draw the zombies away. I’ll use that window to slip down the fire escape and head to the supermarket for supplies. I swear, the moment I find food, I’ll come straight back to save you.”Although Boyd was term

The fifteenth day of the apocalypse.Famine had descended in its absolute, unyielding entirety.Inside the luxury penthouse, not a single chewable item remained. Even the expensive, rare potted plants had been ripped out by the roots by Chloe, chewed into fibers, and forced down her throat. The two of them were completely skin and bones, their eyes sunken deep into their skulls like a pair of walking skeletons.Boyd’s condition was exponentially worse.Due to advanced kidney failure, his legs had swelled to the size of elephant stumps, stripping him of the strength to even crawl out of bed. Toxins that his body could no longer excrete began seeping directly out of his pores, filling the master bedroom with a stench so rancid that even flies refused to linger. He lay on the mattress, his breaths shallow and ragged, his pupils dilated and unfocused.Chloe spent her hours drifting through the living room like a ghost, scratching at every corner for anything she might have missed.
