Smile, Luna

Jessi leaned against the doorframe like she’d been posed there.

Even at one in the morning, she was flawless. Honey-blond waves spilled over the shoulders of a cream silk robe, and her lips were glossed pink, as if she’d taken the time to put on makeup before rushing to the infirmary. Her eyes were wide and soft with concern.

She’d always been beautiful. That was the first thing everyone noticed about Jessi.

It took me a whole lifetime to notice the second.

“Kira, sweetheart.” She swept into the room on a cloud of vanilla perfume and wrapped her arms around me before I could step back. “I came as soon as I heard. You must be exhausted.”

Her hug was warm. Her body was soft.

Every nerve I had turned to ice.

I never touched her. No one believed me.

I didn’t hug her back. After a moment, she drew away, still holding my arms, studying my face with those big, worried eyes.

“Is everything all right?” she murmured. “You left the packhouse in the middle of your mating night. Zion didn’t...” She bit her lip and lowered her voice, just loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. “He can be so intense. He didn’t upset you, did he?”

Behind her, Dakota shifted. The two nurses hovering in the hallway leaned closer.

In my last life, I would have flushed bright red. I would have stammered something about being fine and fled with my eyes on the floor, and Jessi would have walked away with exactly what she wanted: everyone in Dark Moon believing my marriage was a disaster, and believing she knew Zion better than his own wife did.

I smiled.

“That’s so sweet of you, Luna,” I said warmly. “But I’m a little confused.”

She blinked. “Confused?”

“Why is the Luna of Dark Moon so worried about how Silver Lake’s Alpha spends his wedding night?”

Silence.

It spread through the room and out into the hall, thick enough to choke on. One of the nurses made a small strangled sound and quickly covered it with a cough.

Jessi’s smile didn’t move. But her eyes did. For one heartbeat, something cold and sharp flashed behind all that softness, and her fingers tightened on my arms hard enough to sting.

Then she laughed, light and breathless. “Oh, Kira. I only meant, as your sister…”

“Of course,” I said. “That’s what I thought.”

I gently pried her hands off me and looked past her shoulder.

Dakota stood very still. He wasn’t looking at me anymore. He was looking at his mate, a small crease forming between his brows.

It was the tiniest crack. But it was there.

“You should take her home, Dakota,” I said. “She’s shaking. It’s cold in here.”

I turned my back on both of them and followed my mother’s gurney out the door.

By the time the car crossed into Silver Lake territory, I was burning up.

It started as a flush in my cheeks, which I blamed on adrenaline. Then sweat beaded along my hairline, and my coat was suddenly far too heavy. I shrugged it off and pressed my forehead to the cold window as the dark trees blurred past.

My bones ached. Not the dull ache of exhaustion. Something deeper, as if every one of them were being slowly pulled out of place.

Silver, I thought wildly. Did they get to me already?

But there was no wound. Nothing burned. It just hurt.

The Silver Lake clinic was bright and warm, nothing like the cold, gray hallway at Dark Moon. The healers settled Mom into a private room with a window that faced the lake, and an older woman with kind eyes began drawing blood before the IV had even been changed.

“We’ll find out what’s in her system, Luna,” she promised. “Whatever it is.”

I sank into the chair beside Mom’s bed and took her hand.

The room tilted.

I gripped the armrest. My heartbeat was too fast, pounding in my ears, my teeth, the tips of my fingers. Heat rolled through me in waves, each one stronger than the last.

Then, beneath the pounding, I heard something else.

A second heartbeat.

Not Mom’s. Not anyone’s in the room.

It was inside me.

Slow and heavy, like something enormous stirring after a very long sleep.

My breath came short. I pressed a hand to my chest. “What is...”

The door opened behind me.

I didn’t have to turn around. His scent filled the room at once: cedar and cold rain. But it was different now. Before, it had only been a scent. Now it hit me like a wave, warm and dizzying, sinking straight through my skin into my bones. My whole body went taut, every nerve straining toward the door.

“Kira,” Zion said. “The healers said you…”

The thing inside me opened its eyes.

I felt it happen. A presence uncurling in the back of my mind, fierce and wild and awake, turning its full attention to the man in the doorway.

And then a voice that wasn’t mine whispered through my skull, low and certain.

Mate.

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   Run

The cheering was still ringing in my ears when I pushed back my chair.“Excuse me,” I murmured to no one in particular. “I need some air.”Zion’s head turned toward me, but I was already moving. Past the long table. Past Jessi’s glowing smile and Dakota’s arm around her waist. Past Hati, who glanced up as I went by, something unreadable in his tired face. Now, Freya was saying. Now, now, now.Not here. Wait.I slipped through a side door into a dark corridor, then out into the night.Cold air hit my skin. The moon blazed overhead, enormous and silver, so bright it cast shadows. The lawn stretched toward a black wall of pines, and the second my heels sank into the grass, my whole body seized.I stumbled. Caught myself on my hands.Freya, wait!I’ve waited twenty years.I kicked off my shoes and ran.*****I made it past the tree line before the first bone broke. It was my wrist. A sharp, wet crack, and white-hot pain shot up my arm. I bit down on my scream and fell to my knees in the f

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   The Welcome Dinner

The full moon rose as our car pulled through the gates of Dark Moon.I watched it through the window, huge and silver above the pines, and felt Freya press against the inside of my ribs like a dog straining at a leash.Look at it, she breathed. Oh, look at it.I’m looking. Now stay down. You can’t make me.I can try.Beside me, Zion glanced over. He’d been quiet the whole drive, his face turned toward his own window. Now his gaze moved over me, down the midnight silk of my dress and back up, and lingered for a beat too long before he looked away.He hadn’t said a word about the dress. But he’d looked.*****The Dark Moon packhouse glowed with candlelight. Music drifted from the great hall, along with laughter and the clink of crystal.I stepped through the doors on Zion’s arm, and forty heads turned.Silk. Sequins. Tailored suits. Exactly as I remembered.Except this time, I belonged. The conversation faltered. Someone whispered my name. Across the room, the women who used to snicker

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   Full Moon

Agnes didn’t waste any time. That evening, I was coming up the main staircase after visiting Mom when I heard her voice drifting out of the Alpha’s study. Clipped and indignant, every word perfectly polite.“...without consulting anyone, Alpha. She threw the flowers off the balcony. In front of the staff. I only thought you should know what kind of woman you’ve brought into this house.”I stopped on the landing. In my last life, I’d have turned around and fled to my closet in the servants’ wing. I’d have spent the whole night waiting for Zion to knock on my door and tell me to give the key back.He never would have had to. I’d have given it back myself. The study door opened. Agnes stepped out, and Zion followed her into the hall. He saw me on the landing, and his gaze moved from my face to the brass key hanging on a ribbon at my wrist.Agnes saw me too. Her mouth curved in the faintest smile, waiting.Zion looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, “It’s the Luna’s suite.”Agnes b

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   The Luna’s Suite

I woke up in a room the size of a closet. For a moment, I didn’t know where I was. Then I saw the narrow cot, the cracked plaster, the single window looking out over the kitchen garden, and the memory hit me like cold water. The servants’ wing.I’d slept a few hours at most. After Marta promised to call the moment anything changed, a stern older woman had met me at the packhouse door and led me here without a word. I’d been too exhausted to notice anything except the bed.But I knew this room.In my last life, I lived in it for a whole year. What is this? Freya demanded, pacing restlessly in the back of my mind. Why do we smell like dust and onions? We’re Luna. Where’s our den?Good question.I got dressed in the plain clothes someone had left folded on the chair and went to find out.*****The packhouse kitchen was warm and bright and full of people. The moment I stepped through the door, every conversation stopped.A dozen faces turned toward me. Cooks, maids, a couple of young warr

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   Fresh Silver

Nobody spoke. The monitor beeped. Somewhere down the hall, a cart rattled past. My mother lay between us, gray and still, and I stared at the numbers on the healer’s tablet until they blurred.Fresh silver. Small doses. For months. In my last life, Mom never left Dark Moon. She stayed in that cold room at the end of the hall, getting weaker and weaker, and I sat beside her every day thinking her body was just slow to heal.Someone had been walking into that room the whole time. Smiling at me in the hall, maybe. Then slipping poison into my mother’s veins. My hands started to shake.Zion moved first.“Seal this floor.” His voice had gone low and flat, the voice of an Alpha giving orders that would not be questioned. “No one in or out of this room without my approval. Every healer who touches her reports to you directly.” He turned to the older woman. “Your name?”“Marta, Alpha.”“Marta. You’ll handle her care personally. No one else draws her blood or touches her medication.”“Yes, Alp

Mate. The word rang through my skull like a struck bell.I gripped the arms of the chair so hard the wood creaked. My heart was pounding. Heat poured through my veins, and every inch of my skin seemed to stretch toward the man in the doorway.Mate. Mate. MATE.Stop it, I thought frantically. Stop. Who are you?The voice paused. Then it came again, rich and low and deeply offended.Who am I? Who am I? Something prowled through the back of my mind, restless and huge. Twenty years. Twenty years I’ve been locked in the dark, scratching at the walls, and that’s what you have to say to me?My breath hitched.No.It couldn’t be.I’m your wolf, you ridiculous girl, the voice said. My name is Freya. And you’re welcome. My wolf. The Moon Goddess had never sent her. Everyone said so. The healers, the elders, the whole Dark Moon Pack. Wolfless Kira. Useless Kira. But she was here. I could feel her, warm and fierce and alive, curled around my heart like she’d always belonged there.Tears stung my
