Mate.

The word rang through my skull like a struck bell.

I gripped the arms of the chair so hard the wood creaked. My heart was pounding. Heat poured through my veins, and every inch of my skin seemed to stretch toward the man in the doorway.

Mate. Mate. MATE.

Stop it, I thought frantically. Stop. Who are you?

The voice paused. Then it came again, rich and low and deeply offended.

Who am I? Who am I? Something prowled through the back of my mind, restless and huge. Twenty years. Twenty years I’ve been locked in the dark, scratching at the walls, and that’s what you have to say to me?

My breath hitched.

No.

It couldn’t be.

I’m your wolf, you ridiculous girl, the voice said. My name is Freya. And you’re welcome.

My wolf.

The Moon Goddess had never sent her. Everyone said so. The healers, the elders, the whole Dark Moon Pack. Wolfless Kira. Useless Kira.

But she was here. I could feel her, warm and fierce and alive, curled around my heart like she’d always belonged there.

Tears stung my eyes.

“Kira.”

Zion’s voice cut through the haze. He’d crossed the room without my noticing, and now he stood beside my chair, close enough that his scent wrapped around me, cedar and cold rain, so strong it made my head swim.

Freya practically purred. Oh, look at him. Look at those shoulders.

Be quiet.

Make me.

“The healers said you were running a fever,” Zion said. He was frowning down at me, his gray eyes narrowed. “You’re flushed. And you’re shaking.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not fine.” He reached for my forehead.

I jerked back so fast the chair scraped the floor.

He froze, his hand still raised. Something flickered across his face, too quick to read.

What are you doing? Freya snarled. He wants to touch us. Let him touch us!

He might have killed us.

The words fell between us like a stone.

Freya went silent.

In my last life, I told her, my thoughts tight and trembling, someone dragged me into the woods and left me to die. Me and Mom both. It was either him or Dakota. I don’t know which. So no, he doesn’t get to touch us. Not until I know.

For a long moment, she said nothing. I felt her turning that over, quiet and wary.

I don’t remember any of that, she said finally. I was asleep. All I know is what I feel. A pause. And I feel that he’s ours.

Then you can feel it quietly. He can’t know.

He’ll find out eventually.

How?

When we shift for the first time. She said it like it was obvious. Until then, the bond is still forming. He’ll feel something, but he won’t know what it means. Once we shift, though? His wolf will know us the second he sees us.

I swallowed. Then we don’t shift anywhere near him.

Freya huffed, but she didn’t argue.

Zion was still watching me. He lowered his hand slowly, his jaw tight.

Then he leaned in, just slightly, and breathed in.

My whole body went rigid.

His nostrils flared. His brows drew together. For one heartbeat, something gold flickered in the depths of his gray eyes, there and gone so fast I almost thought I’d imagined it.

“You smell different,” he said quietly.

My heart stopped.

He noticed us, Freya said smugly. His wolf noticed us.

Not helping.

“It’s the clinic,” I said, keeping my voice flat. “Antiseptic. Wolfsbane. It’s all over Dark Moon’s infirmary, and I was there for an hour.”

He didn’t answer. He just kept looking at me, his head tilted, the way a predator watches something it doesn’t understand yet.

“Who are you?” he said at last.

“Your wife.” I met his eyes. “For one year. Per the contract.”

A muscle ticked in his jaw. “That’s not what I meant.”

“I know.”

The silence stretched. Mom’s monitor beeped softly. Outside the window, the first gray light of dawn was creeping across the lake.

Then the door opened, and the older healer stepped in, holding a tablet. The kindness in her face was gone. In its place was something grim.

“Alpha. Luna.” She looked between us, then at my mother. “I ran the bloodwork myself. I wanted to be certain before I said anything.”

My stomach dropped. “What is it?”

“There’s silver in her blood.” The healer’s mouth thinned. “Not old silver from months ago. It would have burned out of her system by now.”

She turned the tablet toward us. I didn’t understand the numbers on the screen, but I understood the look on her face.

“This is fresh,” she said. “Someone has been giving it to her. Small doses, over and over. For months.”

The room went very cold.

Freya’s growl rumbled low through my mind, furious and protective.

Someone has been killing her slowly. On purpose.

And they’d been doing it right under everyone’s noses at Dark Moon.

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   Run

The cheering was still ringing in my ears when I pushed back my chair.“Excuse me,” I murmured to no one in particular. “I need some air.”Zion’s head turned toward me, but I was already moving. Past the long table. Past Jessi’s glowing smile and Dakota’s arm around her waist. Past Hati, who glanced up as I went by, something unreadable in his tired face. Now, Freya was saying. Now, now, now.Not here. Wait.I slipped through a side door into a dark corridor, then out into the night.Cold air hit my skin. The moon blazed overhead, enormous and silver, so bright it cast shadows. The lawn stretched toward a black wall of pines, and the second my heels sank into the grass, my whole body seized.I stumbled. Caught myself on my hands.Freya, wait!I’ve waited twenty years.I kicked off my shoes and ran.*****I made it past the tree line before the first bone broke. It was my wrist. A sharp, wet crack, and white-hot pain shot up my arm. I bit down on my scream and fell to my knees in the f

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   The Welcome Dinner

The full moon rose as our car pulled through the gates of Dark Moon.I watched it through the window, huge and silver above the pines, and felt Freya press against the inside of my ribs like a dog straining at a leash.Look at it, she breathed. Oh, look at it.I’m looking. Now stay down. You can’t make me.I can try.Beside me, Zion glanced over. He’d been quiet the whole drive, his face turned toward his own window. Now his gaze moved over me, down the midnight silk of my dress and back up, and lingered for a beat too long before he looked away.He hadn’t said a word about the dress. But he’d looked.*****The Dark Moon packhouse glowed with candlelight. Music drifted from the great hall, along with laughter and the clink of crystal.I stepped through the doors on Zion’s arm, and forty heads turned.Silk. Sequins. Tailored suits. Exactly as I remembered.Except this time, I belonged. The conversation faltered. Someone whispered my name. Across the room, the women who used to snicker

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   Full Moon

Agnes didn’t waste any time. That evening, I was coming up the main staircase after visiting Mom when I heard her voice drifting out of the Alpha’s study. Clipped and indignant, every word perfectly polite.“...without consulting anyone, Alpha. She threw the flowers off the balcony. In front of the staff. I only thought you should know what kind of woman you’ve brought into this house.”I stopped on the landing. In my last life, I’d have turned around and fled to my closet in the servants’ wing. I’d have spent the whole night waiting for Zion to knock on my door and tell me to give the key back.He never would have had to. I’d have given it back myself. The study door opened. Agnes stepped out, and Zion followed her into the hall. He saw me on the landing, and his gaze moved from my face to the brass key hanging on a ribbon at my wrist.Agnes saw me too. Her mouth curved in the faintest smile, waiting.Zion looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, “It’s the Luna’s suite.”Agnes b

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   The Luna’s Suite

I woke up in a room the size of a closet. For a moment, I didn’t know where I was. Then I saw the narrow cot, the cracked plaster, the single window looking out over the kitchen garden, and the memory hit me like cold water. The servants’ wing.I’d slept a few hours at most. After Marta promised to call the moment anything changed, a stern older woman had met me at the packhouse door and led me here without a word. I’d been too exhausted to notice anything except the bed.But I knew this room.In my last life, I lived in it for a whole year. What is this? Freya demanded, pacing restlessly in the back of my mind. Why do we smell like dust and onions? We’re Luna. Where’s our den?Good question.I got dressed in the plain clothes someone had left folded on the chair and went to find out.*****The packhouse kitchen was warm and bright and full of people. The moment I stepped through the door, every conversation stopped.A dozen faces turned toward me. Cooks, maids, a couple of young warr

  • Reborn on my Mating Night   Fresh Silver

Nobody spoke. The monitor beeped. Somewhere down the hall, a cart rattled past. My mother lay between us, gray and still, and I stared at the numbers on the healer’s tablet until they blurred.Fresh silver. Small doses. For months. In my last life, Mom never left Dark Moon. She stayed in that cold room at the end of the hall, getting weaker and weaker, and I sat beside her every day thinking her body was just slow to heal.Someone had been walking into that room the whole time. Smiling at me in the hall, maybe. Then slipping poison into my mother’s veins. My hands started to shake.Zion moved first.“Seal this floor.” His voice had gone low and flat, the voice of an Alpha giving orders that would not be questioned. “No one in or out of this room without my approval. Every healer who touches her reports to you directly.” He turned to the older woman. “Your name?”“Marta, Alpha.”“Marta. You’ll handle her care personally. No one else draws her blood or touches her medication.”“Yes, Alp
