Chapter 3

Author: Maroon Cypress
I twisted my mouth into something like a smile and said nothing. The truth was, I was allergic to lavender — even the smell of lavender shortbread turned my stomach. I'd never been the one who liked it. Marilyn was.

Watching the maid chatter on, I said slowly, "Since you like it so much, go ahead and take it."

The maid froze, then dropped to her knees in a panic. "This servant would never presume to eat something so fine!"

I stood, picked up the box of shortbread, and pressed it into her hands. "Food is meant to be eaten. I'm not well, and it doesn't agree with me. If you like it, it won't go to waste."

Overwhelmed, the maid accepted it and bowed her thanks. But before she'd even made it out of the room, a man's voice cut through the air, tone unreadable. "Where did you get that shortbread? A palace maid, stealing something this fine?"

The maid dropped to her knees again, terrified, tears in her eyes. "My lady gave it to me! This servant would never steal!"

At that, Cyrus looked up and into the room. His gaze caught on me, and for a moment, something like admiration flickered in his eyes. I was dressed in a willow-green gown, my hair pinned up in a delicate, careful style, the garden view behind me lending the whole scene an air of quiet elegance. But the instant our eyes met, I turned my head away, as if I couldn't bear the sight of him.

Something in Cyrus's chest twisted. He bent down, picked up the fallen wrapping from the shortbread, brushed off the dust, and walked over. "Genevieve, why won't you eat it? Marilyn said it's the best shortbread in all of Aldenmere. I only spoke a little harshly before — you know I didn't mean it. Are you still sulking over that?"

Every word grated on me. The old ache in my chest spread further, and I twisted my lips before answering slowly. "You keep Marilyn's every preference carved in your memory, yet you can't even remember I'm allergic to lavendar. Is this what you call an apology, Cyrus? Is this what you call sincerity?"

Before he could answer, a slender figure stepped out from behind him. My gaze sharpened, and my fingers curled without my permission.

She was dressed all in white, her dark hair falling to her waist, every line of her radiating fragile softness. "Greetings, My Lady."

The moment he saw her, Cyrus instinctively pulled her closer to his side, his voice level. "Genevieve, this is Marilyn. She was my childhood friend. If her elders hadn't made such a foolish mistake back then, one that saw her stripped of her rank and reduced to a commoner, she would already have joined our household by now. From today, Marilyn will be living with us. As my wife, I expect you to be generous and look after her — don't go getting jealous over nothing."

Every word of it dripped with favoritism, with tenderness that wasn't meant for me. I was the lawful wife, and somehow I still felt like an afterthought — almost a joke.

Marilyn kept her eyes lowered, the picture of meekness at Cyrus's side, though she couldn't quite hide the satisfaction tugging at the corners of her mouth.

I took a slow breath, forcing my feelings back down, my voice cool. "I haven't said a word. Why are you so quick to warn me off? From now on, help whoever you like, do whatever you like. I won't have any opinion on the matter."

My words seemed to catch Cyrus completely off guard. In his mind, I should have been making a scene over Marilyn moving in — should have thrown one of our usual, bloody arguments. But an entire evening passed, and I said nothing at all, simply let it go without a fight.

Faced with a version of me he didn't recognize, Cyrus frowned. That night, for the first time ever, he didn't stay in his study, and he didn't go looking for Marilyn either. Instead, he came to my quarters.

Footsteps sounded behind us, and Marilyn, sensing something had gone wrong, immediately tried to grab the arrow and force me to take her hostage with it. The same trick, played out exactly as it had been in my past life.I saw through her the instant she moved. I caught her wrist and seized the moment. In front of the King, Cyrus, and every minister watching, it looked to everyone like Marilyn had shoved me over the edge.Terror flashed across her face, and she lunged to grab me back, but I dodged, calm and deliberate, and let myself fall from the cliff.Cyrus's pupils contracted. He threw himself forward without a second thought, reaching for my sleeve — but at the last second, Marilyn caught his robe and held him back. He ended up on his knees at the cliff's edge, forced to watch me plunge into the mist below.I didn't wake again until three days later. Daisy was in the cabin, running back and forth to tend to me, her eyes swollen from crying. The moment she saw me open my eyes,

"I only happened to stumble across the truth by chance," I said. "If Your Majesty will grant me the opportunity, I'll see Prince Cyrus brought to justice myself."The King's eyes sharpened. "That's your husband you're talking about...""I would never allow my husband to keep another woman on the side — let alone right under my own roof. But ours was a marriage arranged by my parents, not one I chose myself, and I fear if I ask for a separation, Prince Cyrus would simply refuse outright. If Your Majesty takes pity on me and is willing to help me leave him, I would be endlessly grateful.""Leave him? You mean you want a divorce from Cyrus?"I shook my head at the King's question. "No. I'm asking Your Majesty to help me stage my own death — to let me disappear for good, so that Cyrus and I can finally go our separate ways."The King's eyes flickered with something between resignation and grim acceptance, and he nodded. "You're clever, and you've proven your loyalty to me by saving my

After kneeling so long in the winter cold that day, I came down with a chill and had no choice but to delay my visit to the palace. But a royal decree soon arrived, ordering me to visit the King's Consort for a proper catch-up and pregnancy check the moment I recovered. The Consort was my cousin — we'd never been especially close — but it made as good an excuse as any for the King to summon me.Cyrus went to Marilyn's quarters as he always did. But not even fifteen minutes later, he came storming toward my rooms, furious. Before he'd even made it inside, he'd already thrown enough things around the courtyard that even I found the noise unsettling. The moment he saw me, his face darkened and he marched over. "Genevieve, how many times have I told you? A good wife should show some tolerance! You've been summoned by my father — no doubt because you're jealous of Marilyn and want him and his Consort to take your side. Why does everything between us always have to drag in someone else? Wh

"Genevieve, get over here and apologize to Marilyn!"Cyrus's tone left no room for argument, as though the whole thing were somehow my fault.I looked at him, my eyes flat and cold. "I've done nothing wrong. Why should I apologize to her?"That only made Cyrus angrier. He seized my arm and wrenched me down onto my knees. In front of everyone, I — the Second Prince's wife — knelt in the freezing cold, while Marilyn, a commoner, looked down on me, lifted only by Cyrus's favor. Seeing the look on my face, Cyrus only decided I'd embarrassed him further, and his voice dropped into a warning."Genevieve, if you dare defy me, I'll cast you aside. You know very well what that means — you're the legitimate daughter of a great family. If I set you aside, it won't just ruin you. It'll disgrace your entire house."A chill ran through me, and the blood drained from my face. Noble daughters like me were raised from childhood to be cultured, refined, obedient — to treat our husbands as our whole

Marilyn hid her smug little smile behind her handkerchief, cheeks pink with false modesty, though her eyes still glinted with satisfaction as she watched me.My gaze went cold as I looked at the perfume, disgust plain on my face. "I never wear perfume unless it's for a formal occasion. Everyone else might not know that — but you don't either, Your Highness?"Cyrus's expression flickered with something close to embarrassment.Once they'd both gone, Daisy came in carrying a plate of food. "My lady, His Highness really doesn't pay you enough attention..."She was right. It was the kind of thing anyone paying even a little attention would have noticed. But he never bothered — or maybe it was simply because it was me, and he'd never cared enough to bother. Before evening fell, Marilyn showed up at my quarters uninvited, still wearing that same air of fragile sweetness, and made herself comfortable in my sitting room without so much as an invitation. Daisy, furious, opened her mouth t

After that, I sank completely into unconsciousness. When I woke again, I was lying in bed. Someone pushed the door open, saw I was awake, and ran off delighted, shouting, "My lady's awake! My lady's awake!"Footsteps approached. Cyrus came to my bedside and pressed a nervous hand to my forehead, checking for fever. Only once he'd confirmed I wasn't burning up did he finally relax.I turned my head away, listless.Cyrus hesitated, then softened his voice. "Are you still angry about me pushing you into the lake? That was my fault — I forgot you can't swim." When I didn't answer, he lowered his voice further. "But you saw the state Marilyn was in. I lost my temper for a moment — I never actually meant to do that to you.""Daisy!" I called for my maid instead of answering him. "I want to sleep. Please see His Highness out."Cyrus froze. "You're throwing me out?"I said nothing, only pulled the blanket up and murmured, "It's late. Your Highness, you should rest as well. I fell into
