Chapter 2

Author: Claremont Quinn
"Why not? Don't you want me to go to the same school as you?" Megan asked.

"Of course I do!" Daniel replied.

Megan gently slipped her arm through his and softened her voice. "Then do as I say."

Daniel remained silent. After a long pause, I heard him say, "Fine."

Megan smiled in satisfaction.

I stood a few steps away, my blood turning to ice.

Could the person who had changed my college preferences in my previous life have been him?

…

Daniel and I had grown up together. We told each other everything.

He knew all my habits and every password I commonly used.

In my previous life, I'd never suspected him. I'd always thought I'd accidentally revealed my password somehow, which had allowed someone to alter my college preferences.

It wasn't until today that I realized the person behind it all had been right beside me the entire time.

I made my way home in a daze.

The moment I opened the door, my parents happily came to greet me.

"Naomi, how did your college applications go?" my father, Richard Fox, asked with a delighted smile.

My mother, Lynette Hann, playfully smacked his arm. "What do you think? Our daughter ranked first in the whole school. Lintdon is practically guaranteed!"

The image of them lying in a pool of blood in my previous life remained vivid in my mind.

I'd been given a second chance at life. Now that I saw them safe and sound again, my nose stung, and tears rolled down my cheeks before I could stop them.

They panicked and crowded around me to ask what was wrong.

I shook my head and smiled. "It's nothing. I'm just really happy."

Now that I knew who was behind everything, I wouldn't let my parents worry about me again in this life.

…

At midnight, I lay in bed with my eyes wide open.

Daniel and Megan's conversation kept replaying in my mind.

If he had really done it, then he should have changed my college preferences by now.

I sat up, turned on my computer, and quickly entered my admission number and password.

I pressed Enter.

The moment the page loaded, my vision went black.

[Last modified at 11:39 p.m.]

It was half an hour ago.

My gaze traveled down the page and landed on my first-choice school.

I could never forget its name. It was the same vocational college I'd been admitted to in my previous life.

My heart felt as though someone had clenched it in a fist. My entire body began to tremble.

Daniel had really changed my college preferences for Megan.

A suffocating sense of terror engulfed me.

I didn't dare imagine what would have happened if I hadn't overheard their conversation. I might have repeated the same tragedy all over again.

I took a deep breath and clicked Change Password with trembling fingers.

I created a long, completely random string of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Even I would need half a day to memorize it.

The system displayed a message: [Password changed successfully.]

As soon as dawn broke, I called Daniel.

"Naomi? Why are you calling so early..."

"Come downstairs. Meet me at the convenience store below your apartment."

I hung up.

…

Twenty minutes later, Daniel pushed open the door and walked in. He looked so natural that anyone would have thought nothing had happened.

"What is it? Why the rush?"

I stared straight into his eyes and said with certainty, "You changed my college preferences."

Daniel's smile froze.

Once he realized what I'd said, he quickly looked away and forced a smile. "What are you talking about? How could I possibly do something like that..."

I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms. "I heard everything you and Megan said in that alley by the school gate."

Daniel's face went deathly pale. He stared at the table.

After a long silence, his shoulders finally slumped, as if all his strength had deserted him. "Yes… I changed your college preferences."

The moment he admitted it, I could no longer contain my anger.

I shot to my feet and shouted at him, "How could you be so cruel? You changed my first choice to a vocational college just for her!

"Don't you know you ruined my life? You ruined everything I worked so hard for!"

"I didn't!" Daniel suddenly raised his head and nearly shouted, "I admit I changed your first choice, but I changed it to Caldwell University!"

…

Caldwell was also a top-tier school, just slightly below Lintdon. Compared with a vocational college, the difference was like night and day.

  • Reborn to Uncover the Truth   Chapter 9

My father was formally arrested and charged with tampering with a student's SAT college preferences. The last time I saw Megan was when I returned to the police station to give a supplementary statement. She sat in a chair in the hallway. She wasn't crying or making a scene. She simply stared at the floor, almost lifeless. She had lost a lot of weight. Her cheekbones protruded, and her chin looked sharp enough to have been carved with a knife. When I approached, she looked up at me.Her face bore some resemblance to mine, but she looked so haggard that she seemed to have aged ten years."You won," she said."This wasn't a competition," I replied. She smiled faintly. "You know, I've known about you since I was little. My mom always told me about the daughter in your dad's family who had everything."Your dad bought you the best school supplies, took you to science museums, and went to your parent-teacher meetings. She told me I had to surpass you, be better than you, and crush

"Have I ever called Megan my daughter, even once, in all these years? When it's her birthday, I'm here with you. When she's sick, all I can do is listen to her over the phone."When she has a parent-teacher meeting, Michelle has to go alone. Whenever anyone asks where her father is, she has to say she doesn't have one!"Do you know the look on Michelle's face every time she told me these things?"My father stared at me, his eyes red. But it wasn't from guilt. He looked like the one who had been wronged."She's never caused a scene. Not once. The less she complained, the worse I felt. After all these years, how was I supposed to repay everything I owed her?"Naomi, I've been by your side for 18 years. I drove you to and from school, helped you with your homework, and went to your parent-teacher meetings."And you? You scored over 1500 on the SAT. You're going to Lintdon. You have your whole future ahead of you. But Megan has nothing. She can't even acknowledge her own father."Hi

I looked at my father. "You knew I'd come to the police station, so you immediately went in and changed Lintdon back, erasing every trace. You know how to code."Did you really think I wouldn't recognize the software installed on the computer in your study? You used to lock yourself in there until midnight. I thought you were working overtime. Now that I think about it, you were practicing how to ruin your own daughter's life without leaving a trace."My father's pupils suddenly contracted. I knew I was right."You knew the police wouldn't believe me. You thought everyone would assume I'd gone crazy from the pressure and started hallucinating." I let out a small laugh. "You calculated everything perfectly. Just now, even I almost believed I was crazy."No one said a word. The officers nearby looked grim. The younger one kept a hand on his radio, while the older officer rapidly scribbled notes in his notebook. My mother suddenly lifted her head from my arms. Tears blurred her eyes

"But I remembered the outline of that girl's face," I said.My mother's voice sounded as though it had risen from somewhere deep underground. "What happened after that?""The more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed. I didn't get a good look at her face, but I remembered the outline of it and the feeling she gave me. It was familiar." I took a deep breath. "She looked a lot like someone. The moment I hit my head today, everything suddenly clicked into place."I looked into my father's eyes, the eyes I'd known for as long as I could remember. The eyes that had watched me walk into school, beamed with pride at my accomplishments, and shone with joy as he spun me around in his arms the night my SAT scores came out."My classmate, Megan Foster. The Megan who scored one point below me on the SAT exams."My mother went completely still. It was as though someone had struck her. Her eyes went unfocused for a full three seconds before slowly sharpening again."She looks like me,

Blood streamed down my forehead, but I smiled. "I know who changed my college application."My mother cried even harder. My father stepped forward and tried to pull me away. "Stop talking nonsense. Let's get you to the hospital and have that wound bandaged first...""Dad." I looked him straight in the eyes and enunciated every word. "The person who changed my application was you."His hand froze in midair. The entire interview room fell silent. Even the faint sound of breathing became clearly audible."Naomi, you hit your head. What are you talking about?" My father raised his voice. "All that nonsense you were saying about a previous life and a car accident? You must've imagined it after hitting your head! Come to the hospital with me first!""Then how do you explain this?" I cut him off. "The IP address was traced to our house. The police checked it. The most recent change to my application was made from our home."My mother suddenly looked up and stared at my father through

The page loaded. The next second, I froze as if I'd been struck by lightning. Two words were clearly displayed in the first-choice field: Lintdon University. The vocational college that had appeared there was gone."Miss." The two officers exchanged a glance, and their tone changed. "Look. Your first choice is Lintdon University. It hasn't been tampered with."I shot to my feet. "That's impossible!" The chair scraped across the floor with a piercing screech."I clearly saw the vocational college at home just now! I didn't change anything on the way to the police station. I came here specifically to preserve the evidence!"I frantically refreshed the page.Once. Twice. Ten times...Lintdon University remained unchanged. One of the officers sighed and softened his voice as if he were trying to calm a hysterical child. "Are you under too much pressure from your SAT exams? Could you be hallucinating? You did so well. Don't push yourself too hard.""I wasn't hallucinating!" I wa
