Chapter 1

Author: Claremont Quinn
Today was the first day we could submit our college applications.

Our school advisor stood at the front of the computer lab and slapped the desk to emphasize each word. "Set your own initial password and college applications. Log in and submit them yourselves. Nobody touches anyone else's account!"

Every year, students made mistakes with their applications, so this year, the school had specifically called us all back and arranged for everyone to submit their applications on campus.

In my previous life, this was where I revealed my login password and set off the tragedy that would ultimately destroy my life.

The thought sent a cold sweat down my back.

I opened the website and immediately turned sideways, using the oversized sleeve of my jacket to block the screen completely.

"Naomi, why are you hiding it so carefully?" A voice suddenly came from beside me, and my hand jerked.

The cursor slipped away from where I'd intended to click.

"Seriously? You're acting like you're guarding a vault."

I turned around.

Megan was looking at me from the side, disdain curling her lips.

She had scored just one point below me in the entire school. That single point put her outside the number of spots Lintdon University had allocated to students from our state.

If I got in, there would be absolutely no chance she could attend Lintdon.

That was why, after what happened in my previous life, she was the first person I suspected.

However, the evidence the police found couldn't be faked. She hadn't left her house at all during the three days after we submitted our applications.

After the technicians recovered the data, they also discovered no record of her phone, tablet, or computer accessing the college application website.

Everything pointed to the same conclusion: she really hadn't done it.

If it wasn't her, then who was it?

I looked away and continued shielding the password field firmly with my arm.

"The school advisor said we're supposed to keep it private." My voice remained calm.

Megan scoffed and stood up. "What an act. Just because I'm one point behind you doesn't mean I can't get into Lintdon.

"And I certainly wouldn't need to steal your application information and change your preferences. Stop assuming the worst about people."

Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried far enough for half the computer lab to hear.

She rolled her eyes, straightened her back, and walked out of the computer lab with her head held high.

I ignored her mocking words and focused on the schools and programs listed on my screen. I checked each one carefully.

School codes… Program codes… Order… Everything was correct.

I logged out of the system and shut down the computer. This time, absolutely no one had seen my login password.

…

On my way home, a familiar figure suddenly stopped me in my tracks.

It was Daniel Hayes, my childhood sweetheart. We had grown up together, and he had gotten into Lintdon the year before.

Just last night, when I checked my SAT score, he had messaged me and said he was in Benton working on an experiment. So why was he here now?

I said nothing and followed him from a distance.

He turned into a narrow alley.

I moved closer and kept against the wall. I cautiously peeked around the corner, then immediately held my breath.

He wasn't alone.

Megan stood in front of him, her tone casual. "Daniel, you know Naomi's application password, right?"

Daniel hesitated for a moment before nodding.

Megan's eyes lit up.

A terrible feeling rose in my chest.

Sure enough, she spoke again. "Then help me change Naomi's first-choice school. Let me get into Lintdon. Please?"

Her voice was as casual as if she were deciding what to have for dinner that night.

I stared at Daniel.

Thankfully, he frowned and shook his head. "Megan, I can't do that."

Megan's smile instantly turned cold.

My father was formally arrested and charged with tampering with a student's SAT college preferences. The last time I saw Megan was when I returned to the police station to give a supplementary statement. She sat in a chair in the hallway. She wasn't crying or making a scene. She simply stared at the floor, almost lifeless. She had lost a lot of weight. Her cheekbones protruded, and her chin looked sharp enough to have been carved with a knife. When I approached, she looked up at me.Her face bore some resemblance to mine, but she looked so haggard that she seemed to have aged ten years."You won," she said."This wasn't a competition," I replied. She smiled faintly. "You know, I've known about you since I was little. My mom always told me about the daughter in your dad's family who had everything."Your dad bought you the best school supplies, took you to science museums, and went to your parent-teacher meetings. She told me I had to surpass you, be better than you, and crush

"Have I ever called Megan my daughter, even once, in all these years? When it's her birthday, I'm here with you. When she's sick, all I can do is listen to her over the phone."When she has a parent-teacher meeting, Michelle has to go alone. Whenever anyone asks where her father is, she has to say she doesn't have one!"Do you know the look on Michelle's face every time she told me these things?"My father stared at me, his eyes red. But it wasn't from guilt. He looked like the one who had been wronged."She's never caused a scene. Not once. The less she complained, the worse I felt. After all these years, how was I supposed to repay everything I owed her?"Naomi, I've been by your side for 18 years. I drove you to and from school, helped you with your homework, and went to your parent-teacher meetings."And you? You scored over 1500 on the SAT. You're going to Lintdon. You have your whole future ahead of you. But Megan has nothing. She can't even acknowledge her own father."Hi

I looked at my father. "You knew I'd come to the police station, so you immediately went in and changed Lintdon back, erasing every trace. You know how to code."Did you really think I wouldn't recognize the software installed on the computer in your study? You used to lock yourself in there until midnight. I thought you were working overtime. Now that I think about it, you were practicing how to ruin your own daughter's life without leaving a trace."My father's pupils suddenly contracted. I knew I was right."You knew the police wouldn't believe me. You thought everyone would assume I'd gone crazy from the pressure and started hallucinating." I let out a small laugh. "You calculated everything perfectly. Just now, even I almost believed I was crazy."No one said a word. The officers nearby looked grim. The younger one kept a hand on his radio, while the older officer rapidly scribbled notes in his notebook. My mother suddenly lifted her head from my arms. Tears blurred her eyes

"But I remembered the outline of that girl's face," I said.My mother's voice sounded as though it had risen from somewhere deep underground. "What happened after that?""The more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed. I didn't get a good look at her face, but I remembered the outline of it and the feeling she gave me. It was familiar." I took a deep breath. "She looked a lot like someone. The moment I hit my head today, everything suddenly clicked into place."I looked into my father's eyes, the eyes I'd known for as long as I could remember. The eyes that had watched me walk into school, beamed with pride at my accomplishments, and shone with joy as he spun me around in his arms the night my SAT scores came out."My classmate, Megan Foster. The Megan who scored one point below me on the SAT exams."My mother went completely still. It was as though someone had struck her. Her eyes went unfocused for a full three seconds before slowly sharpening again."She looks like me,

Blood streamed down my forehead, but I smiled. "I know who changed my college application."My mother cried even harder. My father stepped forward and tried to pull me away. "Stop talking nonsense. Let's get you to the hospital and have that wound bandaged first...""Dad." I looked him straight in the eyes and enunciated every word. "The person who changed my application was you."His hand froze in midair. The entire interview room fell silent. Even the faint sound of breathing became clearly audible."Naomi, you hit your head. What are you talking about?" My father raised his voice. "All that nonsense you were saying about a previous life and a car accident? You must've imagined it after hitting your head! Come to the hospital with me first!""Then how do you explain this?" I cut him off. "The IP address was traced to our house. The police checked it. The most recent change to my application was made from our home."My mother suddenly looked up and stared at my father through

The page loaded. The next second, I froze as if I'd been struck by lightning. Two words were clearly displayed in the first-choice field: Lintdon University. The vocational college that had appeared there was gone."Miss." The two officers exchanged a glance, and their tone changed. "Look. Your first choice is Lintdon University. It hasn't been tampered with."I shot to my feet. "That's impossible!" The chair scraped across the floor with a piercing screech."I clearly saw the vocational college at home just now! I didn't change anything on the way to the police station. I came here specifically to preserve the evidence!"I frantically refreshed the page.Once. Twice. Ten times...Lintdon University remained unchanged. One of the officers sighed and softened his voice as if he were trying to calm a hysterical child. "Are you under too much pressure from your SAT exams? Could you be hallucinating? You did so well. Don't push yourself too hard.""I wasn't hallucinating!" I wa
