Chapter 2: Playing the fool

Adrian Lead was still watching her.

Valerie felt his gaze on the side of her face the way you feel sunlight through glass, present, warm, slightly probing. She kept her eyes on the window, on the darkening sky beyond it, and worked to slow her breathing down to something that did not resemble a woman who had just crawled back from the dead.

"Couple's misunderstanding?" he offered.

She almost laughed.

"Something like that," she said.

He studied her for another moment, the way a man studies a contract before signing, thorough, unhurried, giving nothing away.

Then he reached into his jacket pocket, produced her clutch bag, and held it out to her. She had not even noticed she'd dropped it.

"The reception is still going," he said. "You have about ten minutes before your absence becomes a story."

She took the bag.

Her fingers brushed his briefly and she felt nothing romantic, nothing soft, only the cold, clear click of a plan beginning to assemble itself in her mind.

She looked at him properly for the first time since the corridor.

Sharp jaw. Steady eyes. The particular stillness of a man who never needed to raise his voice to command a room.

Adrian Lead. The one who wins.

She knew exactly who he was going to become. She had watched it happen the first time from the wrong side of a prison cell.

This time she had a front-row seat and the full script in her head.

"Thank you," she said simply, and walked back toward the reception.

---

The hall was magnificent.

Of course it was.

Anthony had bankrupted himself on aesthetics because image was the only currency he truly understood. Round tables draped in white linen, towering floral arrangements, a live band playing something smooth and forgettable in the corner. Two hundred guests who had come to witness what they believed was the love story of the decade.

Valerie moved through it like she owned every inch.

She found Anthony near the bar, a glass of whiskey in his fist, his jaw still tight, the red mark of her slap still faintly visible beneath his foundation.

His eyes found her immediately, calculating, warning, cold. The eyes of the man she had taken three years to finally see clearly.

She smiled at him.

Not a small smile. A full one, soft at the edges, the smile she had perfected over two years of courtship, the one that made him feel like the most important person in any room.

His shoulders dropped a fraction. The jaw loosened. She watched the suspicion dissolve and something almost pitiful replace it.

Relief.

Predictable to the last breath.

She crossed to him, slid her hand into the crook of his elbow, leaned close enough that her words were only for him.

"I'm sorry," she murmured. "I don't know what came over me. I think the stress of the day just, it all hit me at once."

She pulled back just enough to look up at him, let her eyes go soft and glassy.

"Forgive me?"

He searched her face.

She held perfectly still and let him look.

"You embarrassed me," he said, low and tight.

"I know."

She pressed her fingers against his arm.

"I'll make it up to you. I promise."

Another beat of silence.

Then he exhaled, covered her hand with his, and lifted it to his mouth.

"Don't let it happen again," he said against her knuckles.

"Never," she said.

Liar.

---

They cut the cake at eight.

Valerie laughed at the right moments, danced once with Anthony under the chandelier while guests clapped and the photographer circled them like a moth around flame.

She felt nothing.

Her body moved through the choreography of the happiest night of her life while her mind worked quietly and without mercy in the background.

The poultry.

That was the first move.

She had turned it over carefully in the bridal suite before Anthony walked in and she had already decided,a poultry farm, modest startup, positioned precisely where she knew the market was about to surge.

She had watched Ren build one in her first life and collaborate with Adrian's feed mill and turn it into something real.

This time, Valerie would be there first.

This time, Valerie would be the one sitting across from Adrian Lead at a collaboration table.

She needed capital.

That was the immediate problem.

Anthony controlled her finances entirely. He had done it so smoothly she had barely noticed in her first life, the gradual removal of her independence wrapped in the language of love and provision.

You don't need to work. Let me take care of you. Isn't this better?

And she had let him, because she was twenty-six and flattered and completely blind.

She was not blind anymore.

By the time the reception wound down and the last guests drifted toward the exit, the outline of her first move was fully formed.

She would apologize again tomorrow morning, thoroughly, warmly, with just enough vulnerability to make him feel generous.

Then she would mention the vacation. Somewhere expensive, somewhere he could picture himself being praised for sending her.

She would mention the broken heel, the nails, the need to simply decompress before facing his family again.

She would package it in the voice she reserved for extracting things from him, that particular soft cadence that bypassed his suspicion entirely.

He would send the money.

He always sent the money.

And she would take every coin of it and lay the foundation of the empire that was going to swallow him whole.

---

The car ride home was quiet.

Anthony stared at his phone.

Valerie watched the city lights streak past the window, her reflection ghosted against the glass, her face calm and unreadable.

She thought about the inheritance. The 70% share sitting in her name right now, untouched, waiting.

She thought about the document she had signed in her first life, the one that handed it over without a single question and her jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

Not this time.

She thought about Adrian in that corridor.

His voice.

Are you hurt?

The steadiness of it. The way he had not flinched or fumbled, just acted, clean and certain.

She stored the observation quietly at the back of her mind.

She had exactly one year to make Adrian Lead fall in love with her.

She had already wasted one lifetime being the fool.

“So kids, do you believe in rebirth and second chances now?”“Yes, Mom,” they all said in unison.“But Mom, what happened to Anthony and the chief's daughter?”Valerie smiled.“Well, karma has its own way of doing things. Anthony couldn't get the chief's daughter pregnant and was caught cheating on her with one of the servant girls in the chief's house. He was thrown out of the chief's house, and the chief asked Collin to return the farmland to him.”“Wow, that serves him right,” Lisa said.Emma laughed."Oh poor Anthony, Westley is going to kill him herself." Emma said."Yeah,I love how karma caught up with all the wicked people.""Yes,me too" Lisa concurred.“So kids, I think it's time for us to go prepare dinner. Daddy will soon be back.”“Okay, Mom.”“But Mom, I wish I would be given a second chance because there are people I want to unmeet and unsee.” Emma said.Valerie laughed softly.“I know, baby, but it doesn't work like that, okay?”“Okay, Mom. Now let's go cook for Daddy.”

“Ren?”They both called out in unison.“Wait, are we dead?” Valerie asked to no one in particular.“It's only you who is dead. I am not dead,” Dianne said.Ren finally spoke.“Well, you both are in the afterlife, but only one person is dead.”“You stupid bitch! what the hell did you do to Anthony?"Dianne launched forward toward Ren to attack her, but Ren pushed her away.“Maybe you've forgotten we are even. Who is Anthony's father? Huh?. Ren asked.Dianne stayed quiet and stared deadly at Ren.Oh, are you quiet now? I thought as much. Well, I didn't come for you. I came for Valerie.”Ren turned toward Valerie.“So Valerie, you've lived this life before. That was how you were able to maneuver everything in this lifetime?”Valerie stayed quiet. The only thing playing in her ears was the cry of a newborn. Her baby. She tried to run back, but Ren stopped her.“Don't you want to know the reason why you were given another chance and why you came here?”Those words made Valerie stop.Dianne

  • REBORN TO REWRITE MY FATE    Chapter 97: The Road Beyond

Rain had been falling nonstop since evening. The heavy drops crashed against the hospital windows, covering the glass with streams of water that distorted the view outside. Thunder rolled across the sky every few minutes, followed by flashes of lightning that briefly illuminated the dark surroundings.Above the clouds, a full moon hung in the sky.It was unusually bright. It looked almost as though it was waiting for something.Or someone.Inside the labor ward, Valerie lay on the hospital bed, exhausted and drenched in sweat.Twenty seven hours. She had been in labor for twenty seven painful hours, yet her baby still hadn't arrived. Her fingers tightened around the bedsheet as another contraction tore through her body. She squeezed her eyes shut.“Ahh.”A nurse immediately came closer.“Breathe slowly, Mrs Lead.”Valerie tried. She inhaled through her nose and slowly released the air through her mouth. But the pain was becoming unbearable.Another contraction followed almost immediat

The officer contacted Anthony again concerning the case.Anthony sat quietly as the call came through. He looked at the screen for a few seconds before answering.“Hello.”“Mr Lead, I need to speak with you concerning the ongoing investigation.”Anthony leaned back.“What investigation?”“The case involving your wife, Ren, and the men who were kidnapped during your wedding.”Anthony paused.“I told you before. I don't remember anything.”“We understand that, but there are still some things we need to clarify.”Anthony rubbed his forehead.“I can't help you if I don't remember.”The officer remained silent for a moment.“Are you sure you haven't remembered anything at all?”“No.”Anthony ended the call. The moment the call disconnected, the blank expression disappeared from his face.He reached for another phone and dia

It's not what you think.”She didn't answer him.Adrian rested his forehead against the door.“Babe, please.”Still nothing came from inside. After several minutes, Valerie's mother appeared at the end of the hallway.Adrian turned toward her.“Please talk to her.”“Give her a little time.
