Valerie did not sleep.

She lay beside Anthony in the dark of their apartment bedroom, her eyes tracking the slow crawl of shadows across the ceiling while his breathing deepened into the heavy, untroubled rhythm of a man with a clean conscience.

Which was remarkable, she thought, given that he had none.

She had until morning to solve a problem that should not exist yet.

Two messages.

Two phones.

Two threats from completely different directions.

One she had anticipated.

One she had not.

She had come back prepared for Anthony, Diane, Ren, and every face she could still place on the map of her first life.

She had not prepared for a stranger who already knew about the shares before she had made a single move.

Enjoy the shares while you still can.

She filed it away in the cold part of her mind reserved for problems that required patience rather than panic, then turned her attention back to the one with a deadline.

Tomorrow.

Nine a.m and seven p.m

Two places.

One choice.

She had until morning to solve it.

The chairman's dinner, if she missed it, Anthony would spiral. His paranoia would ignite early, weeks before she needed it to, and she would lose the carefully maintained illusion of the devoted new wife before it had served its purpose.

The chairman himself was a variable she needed to handle delicately. First impressions with that man were permanent. She knew that from her first life, when she had walked into that dinner distracted and underprepared and spent the rest of her marriage paying for it.

But Adrian.

Adrian's meeting was a window that would not open twice.

She understood that with absolute certainty.

A man like him extended his hand exactly once. If she was not in that eastern office at 9AM, the door closed, the assessment was made, and she became irrelevant to him, a curious anomaly he had already moved past.

She could not let that happen.

By 2AM she had the outline of a solution.

By 3AM she had the details.

By 4AM she was finally asleep.

She was dressed and in the kitchen before Anthony woke.

She made his coffee the way he liked it, too sweet, embarrassingly so, and set it on the counter and waited.

He appeared at seven thirty in a pressed shirt, surprised to find her already up, already composed, already smiling.

"You're in a good mood," he said, reaching for the cup.

"I slept well."

She poured her own coffee and leaned against the counter.

"I've been thinking about tonight."

"Dinner," he said. "Seven o'clock. Don't be late, don't be loud, and for the love of everything don't mention the..."

"I want to bring something," she said.

He paused mid sip.

"Something thoughtful. For your father."

She tilted her head slightly, watching him.

"I want to make a good impression, Anthony. I want him to see that you married someone with substance. Someone who understands what your family represents."

She watched the idea land in him, watched it move through his ego like warm water.

He straightened slightly. Set the cup down with the satisfied deliberateness of a man filing away evidence of his own good judgment.

"There's a place on Meridian Street," he said. "They do imported wines. His label is..."

"Château Margaux. 2014."

She smiled.

"I already know."

He blinked.

Then he smiled back, wide and pleased, and she saw in that smile the ghost of the man who had pursued her for two years, the man who had once been convincing enough to fool her completely.

"Seven o'clock," he said. "Don't be late."

"I won't."

She kissed his cheek lightly.

"I have a few errands this morning. I'll be back by afternoon."

He was already back on his phone.

She was in the car by eight fifteen.

The eastern corridor was forty minutes without traffic. She pushed it to thirty, windows up, the city peeling away behind her as the road widened and the buildings thinned and the flat open landscape of the agricultural belt opened up on both sides.

The Lead Feed Mill sat at the end of a long access road, newer than she expected, the architecture clean and industrial without being cold.

A reception building at the front, loading bays to the left, and beyond them, a smaller detached structure with a single black door and no signage.

The eastern office.

She parked, checked her reflection briefly, composed, professional, the kind of woman who arrived on time and needed no introduction, and walked to the black door at exactly 8:58.

She knocked once.

"Come in."

The office was spare and orderly.

A wide desk.

Two chairs.

A window overlooking the construction site below where workers moved between steel frames and heavy equipment with practiced efficiency.

No artwork.

No clutter.

The room said exactly what Adrian Lead's public profile did.

I have nothing to prove.

He stood by the window, jacket off, shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows, a tablet in one hand.

He turned as she entered and studied her with the same calm, unhurried assessment he had given her in the corridor two days earlier.

Then he gestured to the chair opposite his desk.

She sat.

He sat.

"You came."

"You asked."

The corner of his mouth shifted.

Almost a smile.

Not quite.

He placed the tablet on the desk and turned it toward her.

A satellite image of the eastern corridor filled the screen. Her plot was marked in blue. His expansion site in red.

A shared boundary.

Approximately four hundred meters.

"Your land sits directly beside my northern expansion," he said. "Whatever you're building there affects my development timeline. I need to know what I'm building beside."

"A poultry farm."

He regarded her without expression.

"You're a woman who just married into one of the wealthiest families in the country. You're building a poultry farm."

"I'm a woman who just married into one of the wealthiest families in the country," she replied evenly, "which means I understand better than most how quickly that security can disappear. I'm building something that belongs to me."

Silence.

He studied her for a long moment.

The same thorough, contractual assessment.

She met it without flinching.

Then he leaned back.

"The mill begins operations in a few months," he said. "When it does, I'll need reliable farms from the very beginning. If your poultry operation meets my standards, I want you to become my first contracted supplier."

Valerie kept her expression perfectly neutral.

Inside, every carefully laid calculation burst into life.

This wasn't supposed to happen for another eight months.

"In return," Adrian continued, "I want the right of first refusal on any future expansion along our shared boundary."

"Agreed."

He extended his hand.

She took it.

His grip was firm, brief, and entirely professional.

Yet when she stepped back into the bright morning air, her heartbeat was three beats faster than usual, and she could not entirely blame the plan.

She checked her watch.

9:47 a.m.

She had more than enough time to return to the city, collect the wine, change, and be at Harold Lead's mansion by seven that evening without a single crack showing.

Her phone buzzed.

Anthony.

Dinner is still seven. Father expects us on time. Dress well.

She slipped the phone back into her bag and smiled.

Everything was falling into place.

She slipped on her coat and picked up the wine.

The stranger could wait.

Tonight belonged to Harold Lead.

By the time dinner was over...

The Lead family would never look at Anthony's wife the same way again.

“So kids, do you believe in rebirth and second chances now?”“Yes, Mom,” they all said in unison.“But Mom, what happened to Anthony and the chief's daughter?”Valerie smiled.“Well, karma has its own way of doing things. Anthony couldn't get the chief's daughter pregnant and was caught cheating on her with one of the servant girls in the chief's house. He was thrown out of the chief's house, and the chief asked Collin to return the farmland to him.”“Wow, that serves him right,” Lisa said.Emma laughed."Oh poor Anthony, Westley is going to kill him herself." Emma said."Yeah,I love how karma caught up with all the wicked people.""Yes,me too" Lisa concurred.“So kids, I think it's time for us to go prepare dinner. Daddy will soon be back.”“Okay, Mom.”“But Mom, I wish I would be given a second chance because there are people I want to unmeet and unsee.” Emma said.Valerie laughed softly.“I know, baby, but it doesn't work like that, okay?”“Okay, Mom. Now let's go cook for Daddy.”

“Ren?”They both called out in unison.“Wait, are we dead?” Valerie asked to no one in particular.“It's only you who is dead. I am not dead,” Dianne said.Ren finally spoke.“Well, you both are in the afterlife, but only one person is dead.”“You stupid bitch! what the hell did you do to Anthony?"Dianne launched forward toward Ren to attack her, but Ren pushed her away.“Maybe you've forgotten we are even. Who is Anthony's father? Huh?. Ren asked.Dianne stayed quiet and stared deadly at Ren.Oh, are you quiet now? I thought as much. Well, I didn't come for you. I came for Valerie.”Ren turned toward Valerie.“So Valerie, you've lived this life before. That was how you were able to maneuver everything in this lifetime?”Valerie stayed quiet. The only thing playing in her ears was the cry of a newborn. Her baby. She tried to run back, but Ren stopped her.“Don't you want to know the reason why you were given another chance and why you came here?”Those words made Valerie stop.Dianne

  • REBORN TO REWRITE MY FATE    Chapter 97: The Road Beyond

Rain had been falling nonstop since evening. The heavy drops crashed against the hospital windows, covering the glass with streams of water that distorted the view outside. Thunder rolled across the sky every few minutes, followed by flashes of lightning that briefly illuminated the dark surroundings.Above the clouds, a full moon hung in the sky.It was unusually bright. It looked almost as though it was waiting for something.Or someone.Inside the labor ward, Valerie lay on the hospital bed, exhausted and drenched in sweat.Twenty seven hours. She had been in labor for twenty seven painful hours, yet her baby still hadn't arrived. Her fingers tightened around the bedsheet as another contraction tore through her body. She squeezed her eyes shut.“Ahh.”A nurse immediately came closer.“Breathe slowly, Mrs Lead.”Valerie tried. She inhaled through her nose and slowly released the air through her mouth. But the pain was becoming unbearable.Another contraction followed almost immediat

The officer contacted Anthony again concerning the case.Anthony sat quietly as the call came through. He looked at the screen for a few seconds before answering.“Hello.”“Mr Lead, I need to speak with you concerning the ongoing investigation.”Anthony leaned back.“What investigation?”“The case involving your wife, Ren, and the men who were kidnapped during your wedding.”Anthony paused.“I told you before. I don't remember anything.”“We understand that, but there are still some things we need to clarify.”Anthony rubbed his forehead.“I can't help you if I don't remember.”The officer remained silent for a moment.“Are you sure you haven't remembered anything at all?”“No.”Anthony ended the call. The moment the call disconnected, the blank expression disappeared from his face.He reached for another phone and dia
