LOGINThalia’s POV
The night air sliced across my face like a razor as I sprinted through the pitch-black woods.
The white silk dress I wore was ruined, torn at the hem and caked in thick mud and thorn scratches. In the distance behind me, the blood-chilling howling of Vance’s tracking wolves echoed through the trees. They were fast, closing the distance easily with their apex predator instincts.
"She’s heading for the northern border! Catch her alive! The Alpha wants to skin her legs himself!" a warrior's voice roared from just over the ridge I had passed.
I didn't stop. My bare feet were bleeding, leaving small crimson smudges on the dead leaves I trampled, but the physical pain paled in comparison to the phantom memory of a knife at my throat. I knew the only way to survive a pack of hunting wolves was to go somewhere they would never dare follow.
Up ahead, the trees grew denser, taller, surrounded by a thick, unnatural black mist. The temperature plummeted instantly, turning my breath into white puffs of vapor.
The border of the Blackwood Forest. The territory of the Lycans.
Without a single second of hesitation, I leaped over the ancient stone boundary line, plunging straight into the dark fog. Behind me, the frantic barking and heavy footsteps of Vance’s warriors came to a screeching, violent halt right at the borderline. They howled in pure frustration, but not a single one dared to place a single claw inside the woods. They knew crossing this line meant instant execution by the Lycan King.
I walked slowly into the pitch-black forest, letting the fog swallow my figure completely. The atmosphere in here was dead. No night birds. No crickets. Just the wild, erratic thumping of my own heart.
Suddenly, a heavy scent of cedarwood, mixed with the sharp tang of ozone before a lightning storm, flooded my senses. The scent was so overwhelming, so violently masculine, and so dominant that my knees turned to jelly just from inhaling it. A violent shiver raced down my spine.
A heavy, deliberate footstep echoed from the darkness of the mist ahead.
"A human..." a deep, rumbling baritone voice vibrated through the air, making the surrounding leaves shake. He wasn't even using an Alpha command, but the sheer force of his energy was infinitely more terrifying than anything Vance had ever put out. "How dare you defile my lands with your filthy blood, little mouse."
Before I could even register his form, a massive dark shadow blurred through the fog with a speed my human eyes couldn't track.
My body was thrown backward, my spine colliding hard against the trunk of a massive oak tree, knocking the air right out of my lungs. Before I could fall to the ground, a massive, burning-hot hand covered in rough scars locked around my throat, lifting me entirely off my feet.
I gasped, my fingers clawing at his stone-hard wrist as I fought for air. A pair of glowing silver eyes stared down at me from the shadows of the mist.
Lysander. The Lycan King.
He was massive, towering over me, his frame far broader and more lethal than a standard werewolf. Pure dominance and unyielding power radiated off him, turning the very air into a chokehold.
But the exact moment his palm pressed against the bare skin of my neck, something explosive happened.
A violent shock of electricity exploded between us. A blistering heat surged from his touch, racing straight through my veins and slamming directly into my heart. It felt like fireworks detonating inside my chest, causing Lysander's chest to vibrate as his inner beast let out a low, rumbling growl of shock and absolute possession.
Lysander’s silver eyes widened. His suffocating grip on my throat loosened just a fraction, but he didn't let go. Instead, he leaned down, burying his face into the crook of my neck, inhaling my scent deeply, like a man confirming a miracle.
"This scent..." Lysander growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, primal hunger. "You... it’s impossible."
I knew what it was. The fated mate bond. Something I had never felt in my first life because my wolf blood had been dormant, but now, my awakened lineage was responding. The ruthless king in front of me was my true mate.
Despite my vision blurring from the lack of oxygen, I forced myself to look directly into his glowing silver eyes. I didn't show fear. I let a thin smirk curve my lips despite the pressure on my throat.
"Take me... to your castle, King Lysander..." I choked out, pushing past the sparks burning our skin. "I have... the exact coordinates of Vance’s secret silver mines... and his military supply routes. I know... how to break his empire."
Lysander froze. The raw shock in his eyes shifted into a deep, dangerously dark curiosity. He lowered me slowly until my feet touched the dirt, but his hand slid up to grip my jaw possessively, tilting my face up to force my submission.
"You're offering to betray your own Alpha?" Lysander sneered, a cruel smile forming on his lips. "What makes you think I need the help of a fragile human to crush a pathetic little pack like the Crescent?"
"Because I'm not an ordinary human," I countered, staring back at him with a vengeance that mirrored the darkness of the forest. "And I know secrets that will bring your own kingdom to its knees if Vance figures out how to use them. The choice is yours, My King. Lock me away as your prisoner, or use me as your weapon."
Lysander stared down at me in a long, suffocating silence. His thumb slowly brushed across my bottom lip, applying a heavy, dominant pressure that blurred the lines between terror and burning attraction.
"You are a dangerous little creature, mouse," Lysander whispered, his eyes flashing with a terrifying obsession. He scooped my body off the ground with terrifying ease, cradling me against his chest as he walked into the deep fog. "I'll take you to my castle. But remember, if you lie to me... I will personally rip your heart out of your chest."
Thalia's POV The fissures in the altar pulsed with a rhythmic, sickly light—like a heart that had been jolted awake after a thousand years of slumber. I leaned forward, my curiosity overriding my caution, desperate to examine the dark, swirling energy leaking from the cracks. Before my fingertips could even brush the freezing stone, a hand clamped firmly around my waist from behind. I was hauled backward with such unrelenting force that my heels dragged against the snow, offering no room for protest. "Stay back," Lysander growled against my ear, his body acting as an impenetrable wall between me and the altar. "You heard Raven. Your blood could tear this thing open wide enough to swallow us whole." "I only wanted to see it, Lysander. I wasn't going to touch it." "I don't give a damn about your intentions," he shot back, his voice vibrating with a raw, jagged edge of anxiety he no longer bothered to mask. His arm remained locked around me, anchoring me to him. "One stray drop of b
Lysander’s POV The chanting reached my ears long before our eyes caught the flicker of the fires in the distance. It wasn't the rhythmic drone of common men. The tones were heavy, guttural, and repetitive, sung in a language I had heard only once in my entire life—carved onto the ancient medal of my family’s heritage, never spoken aloud by anyone still living. "Do you hear that?" Thalia whispered beside me, her entire body rigid with tension. "I hear it," I replied, my voice a low, gravelly rasp. "It’s the same language as the carvings on my medal." We crawled to the lip of the final cliff that separated us from the small valley below, and the sight that greeted us made my jaw lock until my teeth ached. A stone altar stood at the center of a circle of flames, surrounded by dozens of cultists in black robes who swayed in perfect, hypnotic unison to their own chanting. Bound to the altar by silver chains, Raven struggled weakly—she was alive, she was conscious, but she was clearly
Thalia's POV I hadn't even managed to reach Brandon before Lysander exploded into motion—not running, but surging forward in the form of a massive, coal-black wolf that no longer held back even a shred of his primal ferocity. The five cultists surrounding Brandon didn't even have time to scream. Lysander’s jaws tore through the first, his massive claws shearing through the chest of the second, sending a spray of dark blood splattering across the pristine snow. I dove into the fray alongside him. My silver dagger found the throat of the third soldier, while my blood magic coiled around the ankles of the fourth, jerking his legs out from under him before he could even raise his blade. Lysander took care of the last one himself—not quickly, and certainly not with mercy. He clamped his jaws around the man, hoisted him high into the air, and slammed him down against the frozen rocks with such violent force that the very earth beneath us shuddered. This wasn't the Lysander who hel
Lysander’s POV Why did someone else know of a secret path that even Thalia had only just discovered through her ancestor's visions? The question circled wildly in my mind as we stepped into the dark stone tunnel, illuminated only by the faint red glow of Thalia’s magic shimmering in her palm. "Don't speak," I whispered, my ears catching the echo of our own footsteps bouncing too loudly in the narrow passage. "Sound travels far in here." Thalia nodded, her silver dagger gripped tight in her other hand. We followed the tracks deeper, passing ancient carvings on the walls depicting a wolf and a woman standing side by side—the same imagery from Thalia’s vision of Malakor and Ysolde. The footprints suddenly stopped in front of a small alcove, then turned back the way they came, as if whoever had entered before us had decided to leave through the same path. "They came in, then left," Thalia whispered, a frown creasing her brow. "Why?" "Maybe they found what they were looking
Thalia's POV "You want to split our forces in two, when they outnumber us a hundred to one?" Brandon stared at me as if I had completely lost my mind. "Not split to fight," I replied, my voice steady. "Split to distract." We were huddled behind a cluster of jagged rocks, observing the valley below where Matriarch Vessa’s forces guarded the cave entrance. Their torches were packed tight—far too tight for five people to breach using conventional tactics. "Explain," Lysander said. His voice was flat, but his eyes narrowed in that familiar, wary way—he knew this tone, the sign that I was courting disaster. "The seal created by Malakor and Ysolde must have more than one entrance," I said, recalling the fractured visions I had seen in my chambers. "A ritual of that magnitude? They wouldn't have relied on a single entryway that anyone could stumble upon. There are hidden paths—paths that can only be felt by the blood of the creators." "Your blood," Raven concluded softly. "My bl
Lysander’s POVThe message haunted my thoughts even after we buried the soldiers beneath the frozen ground and pressed on through the increasingly steep mountain pass."We should split up," Brandon proposed as we paused at a fork in the trail, his breath fogging in the frigid air. "One group takes the main road, the other the side path. If one gets trapped, the other can still reach the Ancient Archives.""No," I answered firmly. "We stay together. Splitting up only makes it easier for them to pick us off one by one.""Lysander is right," Thalia added, her eyes scanning the mountain slopes with the alertness of a seasoned warrior. "Vessa wants us to panic and make rash decisions. We will not give her the satisfaction."We continued, our horses treading carefully over slick rocks dusted with fresh snow. Every shadow cast by the trees felt like a threat; every howl of the wind felt like a whisper from The Shackled, lurking in the distance."Something is moving to the right," Raven
Thalia’s POVThe water in the copper tub was scalding hot, but it did nothing to wash away the phantom feeling of Lysander’s hands on my skin.I sat submerged up to my shoulders, scrubbing the dried mud and Vance's scent off my arms until the skin turned raw and bright pink. Two Lycan maids had b

Thalia’s POVThe warm rush of my own blood coating my neck was the last thing I felt."Let her bleed out," a voice I knew all too well echoed through the freezing altar room. It sounded so calm.
