Today is regionals. Northwestern University’s hockey team is facing off against California’s Omega hockey team.
It’s a freaking bloodbath out there on the ice rink. Both teams are already an hour into the game and after three solid intermission periods, the Omegas are in the lead.
Theo is in the lead, supporting the offense squad to get the puck into the goal post. Every time our team scores, the cheerleading squad cheers loudly. But my heart is not in it, not when Theo’s out there, shining and dominating on the rink after he humiliated me.
Every time I raise my pom poms, I feel like I’m going to be sick. I even flunk a few steps in our cheer routine. Thankfully, no one notices. No one except Violet.
“Are you okay?” she asks me, raising her voice to be heard above the noise of loud cheers. “If you’re thinking about that asshole right now, better get him out of your mind. He’s not worth it.”
“I’m not thinking about him.” Just as I say it, Theo comes barreling towards the cheerleading squad. Before my very eyes, to my utter dismay, he takes off his helmet and claims Tessa’s lips in a deep kiss. In front of everybody.
The crowd behind the board is going wild with excitement. The commentators are having a field day, talking about Omega’s star player’s unexpected display of affection. Theo’s back on the rink but that kiss—it’s all anyone can talk about.
I want to die. The humiliation burns my throat. Makes my vision swim. My feet are already moving before I realize it. Luckily, Violet sees me marching towards Tessa and steps in front of me.
“No,” she deadpans, eyes firm. “You’re not gonna confront her.”
“Why not?” I fume. “She stole my boyfriend and now, they are rubbing their affair in my face. I can’t take it.”
“I know. It sucks. But think how bad a public confrontation, with that skank, would be for you. If you go to her right now, you give them more ammunition to use against you.”
“It’s not fair,” I bite my bottom lip, fighting back the urge to scream. “Why do they get to have a fairytale when they both fucked me over?”
“Calm down Willow and believe me when I say that this shit will pass. Give it a week and campus will be gossiping about someone else.”
She’s right. I know she’s right. It just sucks to let my asshole ex get away with everything he’s done to me in the last week. All week, he’s been flaunting Tessa at frat parties. Going on dates with her. Spreading rumors about what a prude I was during our relationship. As if that’s not bad enough, now they are kissing at hockey games, like some madly-in-love couple.
I hate it. I hate it so much.
I do not wish to let them get away with it so easily. There’s got to be something I can do.
That is when I see him, tearing across the rink. All six foot five, hunk of male sexiness. Even in gear and paddings, it’s easy to make out the form of Aiden Cross, hot on the enemy’s tail. He’s feral in his pursuit and my breath hitches as he steals the puck from the enemy’s stick. He switches direction with the swift grace that only a pro can pull off and the crowd is going crazy as he passes the puck to another player. The Omega team pass the puck to one another, gliding towards the enemy’s goal post.
Aiden is set to shoot. Once the puck finds its way into his stick, he doesn’t hesitate. He shoots, sending the puck into the net.
Another goal for the omegas. The crowd goes wild, chanting his name.
Aiden Cross. Omega’s number 1 offense player. An outright hottie— And Theo Spencer’s step brother. That’s right. Theo's got a brother, who attends the same university and plays on the same hockey team as he does. It’s no secret how much they hate each other. That’s only to be expected though, seeing as how they are nothing alike. While Theo is loud and a bit of a peacock, Aiden’s more of a brooder. A silent observer.
I forget all about cheering, much too busy formulating a plan in my mind. The perfect revenge. A way to get back at Theo.
The game continues for another hour but I barely notice the minutes shedding away. All I can think about is vengeance. I barely notice when the omegas score the winning shot. Barely hear the ear-splitting screams of the crowd cheering.
The team is busy doing its victory dance on the rink, hooting and hugging. I watch Theo excuse himself from his teammates. He’s gliding towards Tessa, no doubt to make another public show of kissing her.
That’s when I move. I do not hesitate. I dump my pom poms on the ice and make a mad dash for the rink. My heart’s racing, heart pounding.
Please Aiden.
Don’t push me off.
Work with me. Just once.
“Aiden!” I yell at the top of my lungs, hellbent on catching his attention. “Aiden Cross.”
He turns around and my heart nearly stops. Somehow, my legs are still running, still carrying me forward. His helmet’s off and he’s got silky black hair playing in his face.
I wait until I’m a couple of feet away from him before I jump. Adrenaline courses through my veins, morbid excitement sizzles as I wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him.
He’s not kissing me back. I’m thinking I’ve made a mistake when his arm suddenly wrap around my waist. The other arm, he tucks it beneath my ass, opening his mouth, as I deepen the kiss.
I’m trying not to be nervous. I put everything I’ve got into this one kiss. I can only hope that everyone’s watching, else this would have all been for nothing.
“Holy shit,” one of the players guffaws, whacking the back of Aiden’s head with his stick. “Get a room, you guys.”
We stop kissing. I look around the rink. More than half of the players are watching us, eyes wide open. Mouths agape. The reaction that excites me the most is Theo’s. He’s staring at us with his mouth hanging wide open, eyes blazing with fury.
“So, Thompson…” Aiden’s deep rumble cuts through my internal celebration. His eyes are twinkling with amusement when I bring my gaze back to his. “… Care to explain what this is?”
WILLOWOur new member, the one I’ve been hearing about, turns out to be Lauren Thanos. I’m surprised by this but I’m quick to hide it. The girls are pleased to have her. Apparently, Lauren is popular with the sorority girls from both houses. On top of that, she’s a natural talent. She passes trial with ease. Tessa and Jane show up for practice and it’s a tense affair, with everyone looking between us, watching to see who’s going to be the first one to stir up trouble. Thankfully, everyone keeps their claws hidden and we have a drama-free practice. There’s a hockey game coming up and we have a routine to perfect. Lauren gets a hang of the steps on the first try and I have no choice but to make some rotations, putting her in front. No one objects to the rotations. Not even Tessa. She’s been suspiciously mellow today, it’s unnerving. I can’t help but wonder what tricks she’s got up her sleeves for me. Perhaps she has none. Perhaps she’s finally decided to get along for the sake of the
WILLOW“I’m not going to have Tessa suspended from the squad,” I announce. “I know that’s what you’re all expecting me to do but I won’t. There’s been enough in-fighting. It’s time we put that aside and try to work together for the sake of the team.”“That’s not what Tessa said you’d do,” someone says. Her name is Vanessa. She’s in Tessa’s house. “She said you would try to kick her off the team.”“I won’t,” I assure her. “Now that I’m back, I’m going to make sure we all get along. It’s my duty as captain.”“Keeping the peace.” Ginny smiles. “I like it.”“Same,” Violet winks at me. Everyone else nods. I can feel the ice thawing around us. We order our breakfast. While we eat, the girls chatter, filling me in on house gossip. Who’s dating who. Upcoming house events. After breakfast, we head our separate ways. I’ve got my writing class to get to. Vincent offers to go get the car but I stop him. I prefer to walk. So, we end up walking together.People say hello to me on the way. They sta
WILLOWCary asks for us to go car shopping after breakfast. It’s the kind of request he slips in during breakfast, like it’s no big deal that he’s about to spend over a hundred grand on a car for me.“I don’t know why Vincent can’t keep driving me around the way he is now.” Again, I try to plead my case. “I don’t need a car dad. I’m fine with the way things are right now.”“Willow is right,” Helen says, siding with me the way she usually does. I grimace at the sound of her voice. I’ve been acting awkward around her ever since she told me about her history with Spencer. Not because I resent her for it. It just feels weird being in the middle of it all. “She should want to get a car when she feels like it. Not when you say she should.”“But she’s a Thompson,” dad insists. Then, he sighs. “I’ll let the matter drop for now but eventually, you’re going to have to let me buy you a car, Willow.”I know my dad. Once he sets his mind on something, he sees it through to the end. “Fine.” I agre
WILLOW“The solstice ball?” Helen’s eyes flash for a moment. “Wow. I haven’t been to one of those in over a decade. Not since I had a falling out with Grace.”“Grace? As in Aiden’s mom?” My brows disappear behind my bangs. “I thought dad was just friends with mr. Spencer. Didn’t know you’re friends with his wife.”“Oh that’s right. I heard she had a son but I never met him.” She grimaces. “Even if I did meet him, I’m sure she wouldn’t have let me come within seven feet of him.” She scoffs. “I can’t believe you’re actually dating Grace’s son. What are the odds?”“Hold on a second. There’s definitely more to this.” I narrow my eyes at her, trying to keep a straight face. “What happened? What aren’t you telling me?”“Oh honey. I don’t think you want to know. Trust me. It’s a very long and complicated story. One that I had all but forgotten about until you mentioned the solstice ball.”“Aren’t you friends with Grace anymore? Is that it?”She snorts. “We were never friends to begin with.”
WILLOWThere’s a high chance of Cary hunting Tessa down for what she did to me. Telling him about the whole ordeal feels like too much of a hassle, so I ask Vincent to keep it between us. He holds the car door open for me and he’s helping me with my back pack when I whisper the words to him. “We don’t have to tell my dad about what happened at school today,” I rush to say the rest. “My dad isn’t normal. He doesn’t process stuff like regular people. If he finds out about the attack, he’s going to take drastic measures.”“As he should.” Vincent doesn’t seem to find a problem with that. And that’s a problem in on itself. “That girl, Tessa. She knew about your accident and yet, she went ahead to bite you. She should be dealt with.”“Look.” I sigh. “I know my dad asked you to be my shadow and report back to him about everything, but this time, can you not?”“I’m afraid you’re asking a lot of me miss Thompson.”“I don’t want this to become a bigger deal than it already is.” I explain furt
WILLOWI don’t know how my body knows to move. Maybe it’s because I had done it first, knowing that Tessa would want to get revenge. Whatever it is, I step out of the way at the last second, avoiding her full body shove. This isn’t a professional hockey game and I don’t think either of us are going to be penalized for being a bit rough. Tessa slides off to the side, getting out of the circle completely, leaving the puck in my possession. This time, I don’t overthink shit. I seize the puck and I’m off. “No, you don’t!” Tessa comes at me from the side. She uses supernatural speed to even the distance between us. She puts her stick forward and tries to trip me. I spin away from her, somehow managing to retain possession of the puck. Tessa keeps coming in hot. She slides next to me, pressing her shoulder against mine, stick battling with mine. I try to block her out. My mind is on nothing but the puck. The goal line is near. I’m so close.I push myself, skate faster. The stick feels l
WILLOWI wouldn’t go as far as to call myself the kind of girl who goes out seeking danger. I know there are people out there, who get off on trying all kinds of exhilarating, dangerous stuff, but not me.Somehow though, I’ve ventured into the last place I thought I would ever go to. An illegal fi
WILLOWI wake up to the sound of my phone buzzing. At first, I think it’s just my alarm but it’s not. Tate Mccrae blasts at full volume and Violet groans in her sleep.“Ugh! Willow. Will you answer that already?” She grunts. “Some of us are trying to sleep here.”Blindly, I search for my phone, dis
WILLOW“Willow!” The best phrase to describe Jane Keller is “cunt licker.” She’s the kind of girl that would do anything to get in Tessa’s good graces. Rumor has it that she’s being in love with Tessa since freshman year. That’s got to be the reason why she’s so devoted to her.If she’s trying to t
WILLOW“We’re not breaking up,” Aiden says it like that’s final and I wish I could share his confidence, calling Theo’s bluff so easily and throwing caution to the wind. The sun is blazing and Aiden’s hair keeps getting in his eyes, amplifying that roguish glint in said eyes. Those same eyes are fi
