WILLOW

I grew up in an orphanage. Poor. Never having enough. Always depending on the goodwill of the state system. Because I believed I’d been dealt the short end of the stick, I made sure to do everything the state expected of me.

I poured all my energy into school. Got straight As. Scored a scholarship for college. My life seemed to be going exactly as I wanted it to go, unraveling on my own terms.

But then, everything changed when Cary Thompson showed up one day, DNA test in hand.

***

“Willow,” he kisses both my cheeks, eyes brightening as he takes in my cocktail dress. “You look lovely honey.”

“Thanks,” I mumble, allowing him to lead me into the hall.

“So, how was the hockey game?” He picks two champagne flutes off a valet’s tray and hands one over to me.

“It was fine. We won.” I take a huge sip. “Exactly how long do I have to be here for, dad?”

“Oh come on honey. You only just got here and now, you’re talking about leaving? Relax.” He chuckles. “Invites to events like this do not come easy. Besides, there are a few people I would like to introduce you to.”

“I see,” I mumble, sounding unenthused. If Cary notices, he doesn’t comment on it. He leads me forward, showing me off to the people he recognizes in the crowd. He makes a few introductions.

“Cary Thompson.” A middle aged man approaches us. He’s wearing a charcoal gray suit with a bow tie. He’s got jet black hair, that’s slightly beginning to gray.

This man, he’s handsome in a rugged kind of way. There’s also something oddly familiar about him.

“Spencer,” Cary shakes hands with him, grinning from ear to ear.

Spencer?

It suddenly clicks.

He’s Theo’s dad. My ex-boyfriend had shown me a family photo over six months ago, and he’s the one who had been in the photo.

I can’t believe he’s standing in front of me right now. How well does my dad know him?

“Willow… allow me to introduce you to a good friend of mine. Spence, this is my daughter, Willow Thompson.”

“Wow Cary. She’s gorgeous.” Spencer extends his hand for a handshake and it takes everything in me to keep my composure. “How are you Willow? I’ve heard quite a bit about you from your old man. It’s nice to finally meet you in person.”

I bet he won’t be saying that if he knew how I’d just gotten in between his sons, mere hours ago.

“Nice to meet you too.” I make myself smile.

“So, you attend California state? My sons go to school there too. Theo and Aiden. You must have heard of them. They play hockey.”

Kill me now. “Yeah. Um, I’ve heard of them. They are the reasons we won regionals today.”

Spencer’s beaming with pride. Cary mentions something about getting both families together for lunch, sometime in the near future.

I hope not.

I’m already counting the minutes until I have to leave.

It isn’t until Cary is pulled away to converse with a crowd of stuffy, middle aged folks, that I get a chance to make my escape.

“You’re leaving?” Terry escorts me out of the building, seeing me off to where my Uber is waiting for me.

“Yeah. Sorry. I have something important I have to take care of on campus.” A lie. But he doesn’t have to know that. “Tell my father I’ll link up with him for lunch later in the week.”

“Alright miss Thomson. Have a good night.” He opens the Uber door for me. He doesn’t leave until the car’s safely on the road.

On the ride back to campus, I call Violet.

“Hey. Sorry I had to leave in such a hurry. I had a family thing. I’m on my way back now. Any chance we can meet up at Starbucks?”

“Sorry. I can’t. I’m at Gary’s.” Gary is her boyfriend. A nerd from engineering. Definitely one of the cutest couples on campus. “So… what was up with that stunt you pulled on the ice rink today?”

I knew this was coming. I groan.

“Ugh! I was jealous, okay? I saw that dick head making out with slutty Tessa and all I could think of was a surefire way to hurt me.”

“Oh, he was hurt alright.” Violet chuckles. “It seemed like he was about to rip Aiden to shreds before Tessa showed up to drag him away.” She laughs harder. Her laugh’s infectious and she’s got me on it.

“Everything is such a fucking mess,” I say in between laughs.

“Yeah babe. Not to mention the fact that everyone is talking about it. I mean, everyone. They are calling you a heart breaker. Talking about how you’ve got both brothers wrapped around your fingers.”

“That’s not true.” I snort. “I was just lucky Aiden didn’t push me off him.”

“Yeah. About that… any idea why he let you kiss him so publicly?”

“None.” I inhale a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I have no idea what had been going through his head while it’d been happening. One thing I do know is that I owe him an apology.”

“You’re gonna apologize for kissing the school’s most notorious manwhore?” She scoffs lightly. “Oh please. I’m sure he was honored that you laid a free one on him.”

I’m already at campus. Making the short walk to my sorority house. Campus is abuzz tonight, with studies still up, celebrating the win at regionals. Fireworks light the sky. Campus security is lenient with drunk students.

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow Vi. Say hi to Gary for me.” I’m almost at the house.

“Bye bitch.” She makes kissy sounds before she hangs up. I’m all smiles as I cross the rose bush that separates the alpha phi house from the delta house.

I round the corner and a scream tears out of my lips, at the sight of Aiden Cross sitting on the porch steps.

Willow“Aiden.” Naturally, we gravitate towards each other. This time, I can’t help but smile, as I continue to take in his coat. “What the hell are you wearing?”“What do you mean?” he snickers, feigning oblivion. “I’m the resident surgeon on duty today.” He offers Vincent a salute above my shoulder. “Thompson’s guys wanted to get right down to business with our special prisoner, but I thought we’d go first.”Vincent snorts. “Just try not to kill him.” He’s leaning against the wall, arms folded, face amused.Aiden puts his arms up. “Alright, alright. I’ll try to control the urge.”Now that I’m here, I know what’s about to happen. But for some reason, I’m not quite sure I can watch this surgical form of torture.Aiden notices the look on my face. He steps closer to me, bringing his head down. “Hey, you okay? You sure you want to be here for this?”“What are you talking about?” I furrow my brows. “Of courses, I do. I just… need a minute to come to terms with the kind of punishment we’l

WillowI’m showered and dressed long before Ginny wakes up. By the time she does, I’m organizing the contents of my bag. Today, I have my orientation with legal. The past few days, I’ve spent them feeling sorry for myself and worrying about things that have already been dealt with. It’s time to move forward with my summer—starting with my internship.Ginny is pleasantly surprised to find me looking so fresh faced. “You look better. Please tell me something good happened while I was asleep.”“You mean better than Rowan being captured?” I smile. “Fine. Since you’re curious, Aiden was here last night. But before you go getting your hopes up, it wasn’t romantic.”“He came back here?” Ginny raises her brows. “Why? Did something else happen?”“It’s not my place to say.” I add. “It’s just something that he needs my help with.”“And it’s not romantic.” Ginny gives me a smug smile. “You sure you want to be working closely with the guy you’re supposedly broken up with?”I scoff. “This is strict

WillowIs this about Rowan? I don’t think so. If it was about killing Rowan, Aiden wouldn’t have come here at 2 am to tell me about his plans to kill him.No. This is about someone else.“Theo was behind tonight’s kidnapping,” he tells me. He’sseething, clenching his teeth in between each would he spurts out of his furious lips. “My mom overhead him talking on the phone with Rowan, right after he got her. He arranged the whole thing. He told them where she was going to be. The exact time they could get her.”“That’s crazy.” My brows draw together. “I know you’ve had your issues but that’s crazy, even for Theo. You’re family.”“It’s true,” Aiden grips my hands tighter. “There’s more. My mom…” His eyes darken. His grip is starting to hurt but I don’t tell him. “… she says Gary Spencer is my real dad.”“Your what?” The breath seizes in my chest. “I’m sorry but how is that possible? Does this mean Spencer and your mom had an affair?”“Not according to her. Apparently, they met shortly aft

WillowMy phone has been buzzing for a while. It is that incessant buzzing that pulls me out of my nightmare. A dream, where Garrett Smith haunts me still.I wake up and I’m not exactly surprised to find my face drenched in sweat. Next to me, Ginny is fast asleep. She had offered to spend the night, knowing I’d be needing the company, especially after my horrifying meeting with Violet. My phone, I search for it in the dark. It takes my eyes a moment to adjust to the brightness of the screen. Once they do, they settle on the caller id.It’s two am.Why is Aiden calling me at two am?Vincent already called to inform me that they all made it back okay. Rowan and the warlock are at headquarters. They’ll be dealt with later in the morning.I get out of bed and head towards my bathroom. I wait until the door shuts closed behind me before picking up. “Hello?”“Willow.” It’s his voice. He doesn’t sound fine. Is everything okay? Did something else happen to his mom?“What’s wrong?” I ask, swal

Aiden“No,” my mom drops her glass and takes my hand in hers. She picks a napkin off the table and uses it to wipe off the excess blood. The cuts on my palm are already starting to heal. I wish I could say the same for the growing lurch in my stomach.I could have lost my mom tonight. Did he really have to go that far? Is he really that scared of losing to me?“Aiden,” mom brings my hand to her lips. She kisses my knuckles softly. All it does it fuel the rage bubbling on my insides. “I know you’re furious. Trust me, I am too. But before you think to do anything stupid, there are some things I feel you should know first.”“What things?” I hiss. “What matters more than seeking revenge against those who tried to hurt you?”“The truth.” She proceeds to bury her face in my palm. “To be honest, I wasn’t planning on telling you any of this, at least not for several years. But after tonight, I realize that even as werewolves, we aren’t as invisible as we like to think. There are all kinds of

AidenMy mother isn’t one to make conspiracy theories. She is the kind of werewolf to deal with cold hard facts; to see how she can work those facts to her advantage. There’s no way she would name Theo if she wasn’t sure.I believe her.“Theo got on a call shortly after you were kidnapped.” I roll this around in my head, try to come up with plausible reasons. “He must have gotten in touch with Rowan after he heard the details of Willow’s kidnap. But why you? Why collude to take you out? Why not me? I’m the one he’s got a problem with?”“Because of the trials?” mom suggests. “He must have planned this to knock you off balance.” She scoffs. “I always knew that nasty brat would try to play tricks during the second phase of the trials. But I never thought he would go as far as harming me, just to get to you.”“Why is that so hard to believe?” I sneer, gesturing between us. “From the moment you made us members of the Spencer family, he’s hated us. And now, he’s conniving with the bad guys,
