WILLOW

I grew up in an orphanage. Poor. Never having enough. Always depending on the goodwill of the state system. Because I believed I’d been dealt the short end of the stick, I made sure to do everything the state expected of me.

I poured all my energy into school. Got straight As. Scored a scholarship for college. My life seemed to be going exactly as I wanted it to go, unraveling on my own terms.

But then, everything changed when Cary Thompson showed up one day, DNA test in hand.

“Willow,” he kisses both my cheeks, eyes brightening as he takes in my cocktail dress. “You look lovely honey.”

“Thanks,” I mumble, allowing him to lead me into the hall.

“So, how was the hockey game?” He picks two champagne flutes off a valet’s tray and hands one over to me.

“It was fine. We won.” I take a huge sip. “Exactly how long do I have to be here for, dad?”

“Oh come on honey. You only just got here and now, you’re talking about leaving? Relax.” He chuckles. “Invites to events like this do not come easy. Besides, there are a few people I would like to introduce you to.”

“I see,” I mumble, sounding unenthused. If Cary notices, he doesn’t comment on it. He leads me forward, showing me off to the people he recognizes in the crowd. He makes a few introductions.

“Cary Thompson.” A middle aged man approaches us. He’s wearing a charcoal gray suit with a bow tie. He’s got jet black hair, that’s slightly beginning to gray.

This man, he’s handsome in a rugged kind of way. There’s also something oddly familiar about him.

“Spencer,” Cary shakes hands with him, grinning from ear to ear.

Spencer?

It suddenly clicks.

He’s Theo’s dad. My ex-boyfriend had shown me a family photo over six months ago, and he’s the one who had been in the photo.

I can’t believe he’s standing in front of me right now. How well does my dad know him?

“Willow… allow me to introduce you to a good friend of mine. Spence, this is my daughter, Willow Thompson.”

“Wow Cary. She’s gorgeous.” Spencer extends his hand for a handshake and it takes everything in me to keep my composure. “How are you Willow? I’ve heard quite a bit about you from your old man. It’s nice to finally meet you in person.”

I bet he won’t be saying that if he knew how I’d just gotten in between his sons, mere hours ago.

“Nice to meet you too.” I make myself smile.

“So, you attend California state? My sons go to school there too. Theo and Aiden. You must have heard of them. They play hockey.”

Kill me now. “Yeah. Um, I’ve heard of them. They are the reasons we won regionals today.”

Spencer’s beaming with pride. Cary mentions something about getting both families together for lunch, sometime in the near future.

I hope not.

I’m already counting the minutes until I have to leave.

It isn’t until Cary is pulled away to converse with a crowd of stuffy, middle aged folks, that I get a chance to make my escape.

“You’re leaving?” Terry escorts me out of the building, seeing me off to where my Uber is waiting for me.

“Yeah. Sorry. I have something important I have to take care of on campus.” A lie. But he doesn’t have to know that. “Tell my father I’ll link up with him for lunch later in the week.”

“Alright miss Thomson. Have a good night.” He opens the Uber door for me. He doesn’t leave until the car’s safely on the road.

On the ride back to campus, I call Violet.

“Hey. Sorry I had to leave in such a hurry. I had a family thing. I’m on my way back now. Any chance we can meet up at Starbucks?”

“Sorry. I can’t. I’m at Gary’s.” Gary is her boyfriend. A nerd from engineering. Definitely one of the cutest couples on campus. “So… what was up with that stunt you pulled on the ice rink today?”

I knew this was coming. I groan.

“Ugh! I was jealous, okay? I saw that dick head making out with slutty Tessa and all I could think of was a surefire way to hurt me.”

“Oh, he was hurt alright.” Violet chuckles. “It seemed like he was about to rip Aiden to shreds before Tessa showed up to drag him away.” She laughs harder. Her laugh’s infectious and she’s got me on it.

“Everything is such a fucking mess,” I say in between laughs.

“Yeah babe. Not to mention the fact that everyone is talking about it. I mean, everyone. They are calling you a heart breaker. Talking about how you’ve got both brothers wrapped around your fingers.”

“That’s not true.” I snort. “I was just lucky Aiden didn’t push me off him.”

“Yeah. About that… any idea why he let you kiss him so publicly?”

“None.” I inhale a deep breath and let it out slowly. “I have no idea what had been going through his head while it’d been happening. One thing I do know is that I owe him an apology.”

“You’re gonna apologize for kissing the school’s most notorious manwhore?” She scoffs lightly. “Oh please. I’m sure he was honored that you laid a free one on him.”

I’m already at campus. Making the short walk to my sorority house. Campus is abuzz tonight, with studies still up, celebrating the win at regionals. Fireworks light the sky. Campus security is lenient with drunk students.

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow Vi. Say hi to Gary for me.” I’m almost at the house.

“Bye bitch.” She makes kissy sounds before she hangs up. I’m all smiles as I cross the rose bush that separates the alpha phi house from the delta house.

I round the corner and a scream tears out of my lips, at the sight of Aiden Cross sitting on the porch steps.

Willow“It’ll be fine,” Violet grips my hand tighter. “Aiden’s waiting up there for you. His opinion is the one that matters. He’s choosing to be with you, regardless of what his parents think. You’re lucky babe. If I had someone willing to fight for me, I wouldn’t ever dream of letting him go.”“Do you want us to go up with you?” Ginny pops her head in from the back seat. Violet had texted her, informing her about the Grace situation. Then, she showed up shortly after, for moral support. “Don’t worry. We won’t let Aiden know we’re there. I just would really like to see him propose to you.”“I’m gonna have to go with Ginny on this one,” Violet smiles. “I’ve never witnessed a proposal before. Besides, this isn’t just a regular proposal. It’s our esteemed hockey captain, getting down on one knee and sacrificing himself on the altar of corniness.”Ginny laughs at that. “She’s right. It’s not something we want to miss. Please, Willow?”“Fine.” I sigh but I’m smiling now. After the rough c

TheoI switched on Mitch because of how impatient he was getting. All he cared about was getting Rowan out of confinement and in the long run, it would have ruined my plans. If I had killed Aiden tonight, it would have been traced back to me. And if that happened, there was no way Spencer was going to allow me inherit shit— son or not.But I had played along with Mitch, made him believe that we were partners, working towards a common goal. In the end, we weren’t. All he cared about was Rowan.Aiden isn’t really thinking about the proposal anymore. The romantic surprise he’d put together lays forgotten for a moment and all he can talk about is how Mitch had managed to infiltrate our lives with no one being any the wiser. The fact that he’s talking to me, of all people, about this proves that he trusts me now. I proved myself to him tonight. I also take it a step further by telling him the whole truth. Well, my version of the truth. I spin a story about how Mitch was working with re

Darla“My mother is where?” Aiden looks taken aback by what I’ve just told him.He flares up instantly, the way I knew he would. He is so predictable with his reactions, especially when they come to Willow Thompson. If he keeps this up all night, he’ll be quite easy to kill.“She’s at miss Thompson’s place,” I tell him, acting like it distresses me to give him this information. But in truth, I’ve never been happier. “Why is she there? What does she plan to accomplish?”We’re on the balcony of the hotel that lover boy has chosen for his romantic proposal tonight. There are flowers arrangements and balloons.A dome structure is coated with even more flowers. There are fire lilies lighting up the night sky, giving the roof an ethereal look.Fireworks are already on standby to go off the second Willow Thompson says yes to his proposal.I hope by then, he’ll be dead.Aiden moves towards the railing and dials what I think is his mother’s number. While he waits for her to answer, he asks m

Willow“He asked you to dress fancy? And he refused to tell you where you guys are going?” Violet squeals out loud. “Oh my goodness. Willow, please tell me you know what this is.”“He’s gonna propose, girl” Ginny puts words to the thoughts that has been on my mind since yesterday. I’m on video call with Ginny. Violet is grinning at me from the sofa. “I have a strong feeling that’s what’s gonna happen.” I let out a deep breath. “But hold on a minute guys. Is it alright for him to be doing this without having the talk with me first?”“What’s there to talk about?” Violet snorts. “Like you both aren’t already promised to each other.”“I know that. It’s just the timing. After what happened with the lycan princess yesterday, I don’t know. I feel weird now. I worry that he might be proposing tonight because of her.”“Even if that’s the case, it’s Aiden. He loves you. End of discussion.”“I still can’t believe you met princess Yvette yesterday and it ended up with her threatening you.” Ginny

AidenWillow’s not picking up her phone. I’m at her place. Already called her aunt, and she said Willow already left the manor hours ago. I try Ginny next. “Sorry Aiden. I haven’t spoken to Willow all day. I’m actually on a date right now. Is this urgent? Do you need me to try to reach her?”“Don’t worry about it.” I say. “Go back to your date.”“I could try.”“It’s fine. Sorry I interrupted your good time.” I hang up. Violet can’t be reached either. I’ve got no choice but to wait until they both show up. I know I’m being worried for nothing. They are both adults. They must have gone out together and are most likely having a good time. I’m the one who’s anxious. I’m the one who’s desperate to see her; to reassure her that our relationship will work itself out. It doesn’t matter that Yvette is the lycan princess. She doesn’t hold a candle to Willow. Finally, around eight pm, they finally show up, reeking of alcohol. I was right. They had gone out to have fun. They stumble into

WillowI’m not gonna lie. After the collision, I was expecting gunshots to follow. It wouldn’t be the first time that someone had followed me and tried to harm me.“Hey Willow. Are you okay?” Violet reaches for me. Her eyes are scanning my body for injuries. Possible bullet holes.“I’m fine,” I reassure her, doing the same; checking her for injuries. We’re both fine. The rear end of my car is not though.Violet is the first one out of the car. She goes over to the other car and starts yelling loud enough for everyone to hear. “Hey. What the hell kind of driving is that? Do you have any fucking idea whose car you just thrashed?”“Violet,” I grab her shoulders, pulling her back. The other car is a rolls Royce. The werewolf standing in front of us seems to be the driver. Why isn’t he apologizing though?“Look at you just standing there.” Violet hisses. “Perhaps we should report this to the lycan authorities, Willow. Let’s see how he likes it when he has to spend a whole night in the dun
