Chapter 13
Speed
I woke up the next morning to find myself alone in bed. Normally I don’t have a problem with that. I actually prefer it. But today it bothers me. For some reason, my heart was hoping to find Gretchen laying beside me and now I’m disappointed. But I should be. This is the way it has to be even if it hurts my heart a bit. I sit up in bed for a few minutes trying to understand why Gretchen not being here or even saying goodbye is bothering me. After the only thing I could come up with is that maybe I like her, I gave up. Maybe isn’t true. I do like her a lot and that is the problem. But I don’t have the time or brainpower to think about it too long today. Today is a big day and I need to get moving.

BrickRatchet’s birthday party is in full swing. I can see everyone having a good time. More importantly, so is the birthday boy. When he first came in you could see the shock written all over his face. He was definitely not expecting most of the club to be here to celebrate with him. Speed Ratchet’s birthday party was a blast and we all had a good time. The best surprise was when Merigold brought Alaric and the rest of the Alabama crew in for it. Well, that is when Ratchet pulled me to the side and told me he was gay. I’m not bothered by the fact, he is my brother and I will love him no matter what. Gretchen I haven’t seen Speed since Ratchet's birthday party and I can’t stand it. I have talked to Brick and I know he spent some time with her the day after. He told me they talked for a bit and he has an idea of what some of the problem with Speed is. She is convinced that she is broken. Brick says the way she talked about how it was wrong to want to be with either of us, it was like a programmed response. Like someone has brainwashed her or something. He thinks judging from the scars on her back, it is more like someone has beaten it into her. I almost broke down in tears when he told me that. I have spent all week coming up with ideas to break down what Brick and I are calling her programming. Brick says the biggest thing is that we can’t give up. We have to keep going after her with everything we have. Even when she pushes back. He said she tried with him the day they were together.

Speed I finally got my car fine-tuned just the way I like it. Thankfully I didn’t have much more interruptions from Gretchen and Brick. What the hell were they thinking showing up like that. I could barely think. I was tightening the same bolt for ten minutes hoping they would leave. But no, they just hung around. And when they found out I hadn't eaten in two days they came up and not only confronted me but wouldn’t leave until they made sure I ate. It wasn’t like I did it on purpose. I just forgot to eat. I didn’t even realize it had been two days. I had been so focused on getting the car ready and myself it just slipped my mind. At least they saved me from Merigold. Gretchen When Brick came back from the track after watching Speed’s time trial he pulled me aside. I admit I was curious as to how it went but could find a good enough reason to go. I knew she had a lot of people there to get prepared for race day and I didn’t want to get in the way since I had nothing to contribute. So I worked around the clubhouse to keep myself busy and my mind occupied. So when Brick came back I was relieved wanting to know what happened. Brick pulled me into the playroom and sat me down. Ratchet After talking with Gretchen last night I decided to take her advice and talk to Brick. I have eyes and I’m not stupid I know something is going on with the three of them. I just don’t know what. I respect Gretchen for only telling me her part in all this. She is right it isn’t her place to speak for Brick or Speed. I also know that my sister isn’t ready for me to know anything yet or she would have something already. I feel like she is battling with herself. I can see it with the way she tries to push Gretchen and Brick away. But I’m happy to see that Gretchen isn’t letting her do it. And when Gretchen asked how I felt about Brick and her pursuing Speed it felt good that she wanted my opinion and I got the feeling she was also looking for my acceptance about the situation. All I want is for my sister to be happy the way she deserves. I don’t care how or with whom it happens.

BrickAfter talking to Ratchet I knew I needed to know more. Ratchet didn’t have the answers I needed so I’m going to have to talk to Merigold. And I was going to have to take Gretchen with me since we were in this together. She should hear the story first hand instead of getting the half assed version from me. I also know it will take some convincing to get Merigold to tell us the story. Merigold is a good woman and she would feel like she is betraying her friend by telling us. Ratchet I felt better after my talk with Brick. I didn’t get all the answers I wanted but between Gretchen and Brick, I have a pretty good idea about what is going on. Both Brick and Gretchen want a relationship with my sister. And they are working together to win Speed over. I’m not clear on how it works but I don’t need to. The thing that I was worried about was cleared up by talking to them. They have no intention of hurting my sister. Anything else is not my concern. They can figure it out amongst themselves. I leave Brick to meet up with Gretchen and Speed to go shopping and get me a haircut. After we got home it was already late when we got back to the house leaving me only an hour and a half to get ready.
