ASHLEY'S P.O.V

I was breathless.

Energized, filled, and breathless, but still, worried

Warning bells rang in my mind, filing me with a sense of dread and danger. A sound of mild exhaustion slid out from me as I brought a hand to touch my lips.

Kellan and I had kissed for what could be minutes or hours even. I could still feel his lips on mine, still taste him on my tongue. I could still feel the way his hands held my face and stomach while he kissed me.

Kellan had pulled back, his eyes full of love and wistfulness and gratitude, then he said “Eat...and stay” and with that, he left, taking away the warmth and comfort of his presence

I almost, almost called out to him. I almost told him to stay with me, but words failed me and I watched as he walked out the door.

Stay.

My cheeks warmed at the thought as I propped one strawberry from the tray into my mouth. Kellan had made me toast and scrambled eggs, and added a bowl of fruit too.

It was good, but the taste barely registered in my head

ASHLEY'S P.O.VIt was the scent of something new yet sweetly familiar that woke me up.I blinked, trying to take in my surroundings. Where was I?The walls weren't white, and I couldn't smell antiseptic in the air. My heart calmed down, I didn't even know it was racing like that. Instantly, my hand moved to my stomach, touching and caressing the curve of it lightly. As if sensing my worries, my little girl kicked me, giving me the confirmation that she was still there, still here with me, healthy and safe in mommy's stomach. My eyes fluttered closed in relief and thanks. Trapped in that elevator is something I never, ever want to experience again. For some few minutes, it took me back to that day of the miscarriage, that was how I felt—trapped.I proped one elbow down on the soft linen, the sheer comfort of them made me sigh. Slowly, my vision began to clear as I took in the large bedroom of grass green and cream colour. The walls were done in a soft milky color, complemented by curt

KELLAN'S P.O.VThe floor beneath us dropped and....“Aaaahh” Ashley screamed, a sound that pressed into me harder than the straps and rope around my body. Her nails dug into my back while she held me tighter “Shhh. It's okay. It's okay” I whispered, my words steady despite the situation. Ashley shook her head against my neck, sobs shaking her body, and hot tears dropped on my skin. “We're fall..fallling” The lock of my arms around her tightened. I pressed my lips against her hair, muttering soft, soothing words. “We're not. It’s just a slip. I’ve got you.”The elevator groaned again, but it wasn't anything threatening, the car just slid a few inches down. Her sobs seemed to die down, but she didn't raise her face, didn't look at me. “We're...not?”Above us, the firefighters began pulling again.I focused on her breath, her warm tears, the sound of her sobs, and the feeling of completeness from having her in my hands again.I placed another kiss on her hair. My heart was shredding

KELLAN'S P.O.VIt was all black at first.Swirls of black made it difficult to see clearly as I walked up the stairs.Fourth floor. I could hear their voices from the fourth floor. A cough wracked me. Violent, shaking, and racking my whole body.My eyes burned, and my lungs felt like lead. I covered my nose and mouth with one hand while bracing the other on the railing as I willed my feet to move faster.Instead of giving in to the suffocating air of black that seemed to be slowly choking life out of me, I wondered about Ashley. What state was she in, is she alright? Have the firefighters managed to get her out of the elevator? It was those questions that fueled me with a rush of breath and adrenaline, making me resist the urge to collapse due to the smoke. I kept running. One stairs. Two. Three. I pressed my shirt over my mouth and nose, my breath was wet and raw, filled with the bitter taste of smoke. Another hard cough tore out of my chest, almost doubling me over, my eyes felt

KELLAN'S P.O.VA sense of dread coiled low in my gut. I don't know why, but this was very similar to that ‘Parasite’ I had felt on my way to bring back Ashley from Dallas. This feeling—whatever it was-was heightened by the events of the past three days.Everything was short of chaotic and...strange. First, it was visiting July's home and learning that Ashley hadn't lived there for a long while.I didn't lose the hope or zeal I had gone with, so with those lilies and pink roses seated in the back seat of my car, waiting for me to hand them over to the rightful owner, I had propped open my laptop and searched for Ashley. On a normal day, if things were normal and not...strange, finding Ashley shouldn't have been a problem for anyone —especially me, a tech genius. But to my utmost shock and sudden dread, her database was wiped clean from the internet. It was as if Ashley Harrington or Ashley Langston had never existed.Strange. Dreadful and purposefully. It was too clean, the work too w

ASHELY’S P.O.V.Tobias, I've concluded, wanted something from me.I tried not to harden my jaw as the kettle whistled, jerking me out of my thoughts. About five minutes ago, he knocked on my door asking if I was busy or needed help. I said no, of course, but then he volunteered to look at the faulty faucet I had mentioned in passing.“Sugar?” I asked, not looking away from the kettle.I wish July or any of the girls were around today, because how do I handle all the awkwardness? How do I politely tell Tobias that I wasn't in the right state of mind to entertain guests?I could feel him standing by the doorway, checking out my apartment with that grin of his. “Yes, please,” He answered from behind me.I took the kettle off the burner and poured hot water into a mug of tea. After two swirls with a spoon, I turned to him.Tobias was indeed leaning against the doorway, his arms crossed and a gleam in his eyes as he watched me walk towards him. I tried not to cringe or let my expression of
