LUCIAN

The morning had barely begun when I sat at the long oak table with a few of my council members, a plate of food in front of me that I had barely touched. The air was filled with murmurs of low conversations, clinking cutlery, and the faint scent of roasted meat, but my mind wasn’t on the meal. I had just lifted my cup to drink when the heavy doors creaked open and one of my spies stepped in, his face tight, his posture alert. I lowered the cup slowly, my eyes narrowing as he bowed slightly and walked straight to me.

“Alpha Lucian,” he said with a tone that carried both urgency and dread, “I bring news from Kieran’s pack.”

I leaned back in my chair, waving a hand to silence the council members who were mid-discussion.

“Speak,” I said calmly, though my chest tightened with the instinct that this would not be good.

The spy glanced around, clearly unsettled, but then fixed his eyes on me. “Alpha Kieran has called upon the other Alphas… he’s enlisted their help. They’re forming an a

RAVENI found a place in the shadowed alcove where the tree-root pillars carved the council chamber into ribs, and I folded myself small against the stone. From here I could see everything, Kieran’s jaw working as he spoke, the way Marcus’s knuckles whitened when he slammed his fist down, the twitch at the corner of Helena’s mouth when she smelled strategy she didn’t like. I wasn’t meant to be here.I knew that as plainly as I knew my own name. But when Kieran called the council, I followed, because whatever they decided in that room would shove the world I’m tangled in either closer to the edge or back from it. And maybe, if I were being honest with myself, it was because every time Kieran spoke I felt the old pull, the one that had never quite left me since those first reckless nights.“Kieran,” Marcus said, voice like gravel scraped over metal. “You shouldn’t have brought this before the council if you didn’t have blood to back it up. Talk doesn’t stop wolves from dying.”Kieran’s

KIERANI leaned forward in my chair, the heavy oak table between us groaning under the weight of too many arms pressing down on it. The air in the council chamber was thick with tension, and I knew it wasn’t just me who felt it. I took a deep breath, then let my voice carry across the room.“Lucian isn’t just prowling around anymore. He’s building. He’s gathering. My scouts have seen his numbers swell in just the past few weeks. If we keep ignoring him, we’ll be forced to deal with him on his terms, not ours.”Alpha Marcus, his beard streaked with gray but his eyes still sharp, let out a low growl. “I warned you all last year that he was trouble. You dismissed him as a stray with no bite. Now look. He’s turned into a plague.”“I won’t deny that, Marcus,” I said, holding his gaze firmly. “But we can’t afford to sit here trading blame. The question is, what are we going to do about it?”Alpha Rowan leaned back, folding his arms across his chest. “Take him out. Plain and simple. No more

RAVENI could feel the tension in the air before I even stepped into the hall. The pack was restless, whispers flying from one corner to another about Kieran making calls, about Alphas who hadn’t set foot on this land in years now preparing to march under his banner. I tried to keep my steps steady, my face calm, but inside, my stomach twisted. When I finally found him, he was leaning over the map, Rowan beside him, both of them looking like they were carrying the world’s weight. I crossed my arms and spoke before either of them noticed me.“So it’s true then… you really called the others.”Kieran’s head snapped up, his eyes meeting mine with that familiar fire. “I didn’t have a choice, Raven.”“You always have a choice,” I shot back, my voice sharper than I intended. “You told me you’d handle Lucian without dragging the whole damn region into it. Now you’re setting up a war that could swallow everyone.”Rowan sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Raven, you don’t understand.”“I

KIERANI leaned back in my chair, staring at the map laid out on the table in front of me, my fingers drumming against the wood.“I could call the other Alphas,” I muttered under my breath, though I wasn’t sure if I was trying to convince myself or just filling the silence. “But would that be too much?”“Too much?” my Beta, Rowan, raised a brow as he folded his arms across his chest. “Kieran, Lucian has been pressing harder with each raid. He’s not backing down, and you know damn well he won’t stop until he bleeds you dry. If the other Alphas were in your position, they wouldn’t hesitate.”I sighed, shaking my head. “That’s exactly what I’m thinking about. If Lucian were in my place, he’d already have rallied everyone he could find and come down on me with fire and steel. That’s who he is. But me?” I looked Rowan straight in the eyes. “If I make that call, I’m telling everyone I can’t handle this on my own. And you know how the others are, they’ll see weakness before they see strategy

KIERANI had been watching her for a while, though she didn’t know it. Raven thought she moved quietly, that she blended in, but I could read the tension in her shoulders even from a distance. The way she clutched her hands too tightly, the way her eyes darted around as if the walls themselves had eyes. Something wasn’t right, and I wasn’t the only one who noticed.I saw Rowena walking away first, her face tight, her steps quick like she was running from something she didn’t want to admit. My jaw clenched. And then there was Raven, standing there in the middle of the path, frozen like a statue. Her lips were pressed shut, her eyes fixed on nothing, and for once she didn’t look like the unshakable woman she wanted everyone to think she was. She looked… cornered.I walked up slowly, not wanting to spook her, though she didn’t even flinch until I spoke. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”Her head snapped toward me, eyes wide for just a split second before she masked it. “I’m fine,” she
