[Primus]

One moment, I am standing in my mate's room, the warmth of her body still fresh on my skin as the scent of our egg's birth tickles my nose, reminding me of my duty as a father and husband to protect my brood.

And the next moment, it is all gone. The bitter chill of perfect darkness swallowed every trace of light and smell as the void takes me, removing my sense of self as I become less than flesh, my spirit free once more to travel faster than thought. It is an odd sensation, feeling like less than nothing, my heart still beating somewhere, yearning to be back where I was, back with the one most precious to me.

Roaring in anger, I grasp for the shadows as I try to reshape them, to use what I felt to try to create a way back to her. Carnelia and our newly laid egg are in danger. How can I protect them if I don't have arms to fight?

The darkness vanishes, and the cave-like room within the compound of the Magi is replaced by the cold, wet hold of the prison ship where my bod

I wasn't looking forward to this having grown a nit annoyed with the characters being kept apart but this book has turned out to be quite good. I find it hard to stop reading.

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   051: Flight

[Primus] Nobody stops me as I leap out the window, spiraling down from the tall tower until I find the window of the hallway leading to the Technician’s lab. It is a clear day, the sky is blue, and the sea is the perfect shade of teal, the surface as glassy as a mirror and calm. As the wind picks up the edges of my wings, I see the sail of a tall ship as it heads down the wide, deep river. Perfect weather to get my family to safety. Kora and Ursa are busy in the corner pulling Orion's stabilization pod from an interconnected mess of wires when I swoop through the back window. Ursa looks up briefly as my foot touches the ground, but then immediately returns to her job, slowly removing Kora’s two surviving eggs from the incubator and placing them in metal cases with long straps. “Good, you’re back,” Kora pulls one last cable, and the viewing window to the pod goes black, casting Orion’s face in deep shadow. “Hurry, the ship is readying to set sail. We need to be gone before sunset t

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   050: Eleanora's Folly

[Primus]At least thirty armed drakes walk towards me. The ones in the back are holding their crossbows aimed at my throat, their eyes glowing icy blue with menace. Air drake soldiers are an elite group of warriors trained from the time they are hatched to be efficient assassins. They are notorious for their cold cruelty and are often hired by nobles and wealthy merchants for espionage and security. They are mercenaries of the sky with the ability to hear any secret carried on the wind. Eleanora was born air dragon royalty, her father’s duchy having one of the largest concentrations of air dragons on the planet. It was one of the reasons my brother pushed for an alliance with them. Gain their trust, their loyalty, and it’s unbreakable. When a legion of air drakes swear their fealty to a master, it is life long and their loyalty is legendary. Most of the false queen’s guards have been with her since the moment she hatched, most of them barely older than hatchlings themselves. By the

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   049: Beg Me

Eleanora's excitement dances in her eyes as her irises swirl in shades of blue and bright silver. She thinks she's won, that she's just been handed everything she has desired. In her mind, her path to power has been secured, her long wait over, and her torture finally ended. "Do you swear it?” Eleanora’s eyes flash a bright silver. “Do you swear on your name and honor that you will do everything I ask of you if I release your family?” "I do swear," I declare resolutely, confirming my pledge in a strong, deep voice that falls around us like heavy stones in an otherwise silent room. "If you free my family, leave them alone, remove all guards from watching them, I'll do whatever it is that the Queen of Luxandra asks of me." If I were any other drake, as soon as I got what I wanted, I'd simply go back on my word, but Eleanora knows how much my honor means to me. I am not just any noble–I’m a dragon prince, and the true heir of the Luxandrian throne. Because of that honor, like many n

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   048: Duty and Honor

[Primus]Everything freezes as my heart seizes and my mind falls into darkness. On some level, I can still hear Eleanora speaking, spewing some nonsense about how Carnelia was captured, and how they treated her body with care, but her words are nonsense to my ears as all the air rushes out of me and my body grows cold and numb. There is no way that Carnelia and our last remaining egg of this brood is gone–I’d have felt her leave me, just like I felt her passing before. Terrified, I reach along the connection between myself and Carnelia. Our bond has always been strong, from our first mating, made even stronger after our marriage, and later, the birth of our children. Each link between us forges a chain of love and strengthens us, allowing our thoughts, feelings, and even dreams to be shared. It is a rare thing to find one's fated mate, and even more rare in our world to be given the freedom to claim them. Bonds like our are rare. When Carnelia died during her imprisonment in the Sou

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   047: A Long Way from Home

[Carnelia]I never expected that the name that would spring from her lips would be the same as the name I first encountered at the beginning of this adventure, in the pages of a children’s book read to me by my mate before I even understood what a mate really was. Even before I knew what it was to be a dragon, that name had importance to me. That book was the first book I ever read. My name, Carnelia, was picked from its pages. Oaestr is the mother of all dragonkind. The first of us. Surely she isn’t that Oaestr. I’m not even sure that she was ever anything more than a fantasy story told to hatchlings to help them make sense of the confusing world we live in. “Did your parents name you for The Mother of Us All?” I ask casually, keeping my tone light. “I’ve never met another Oaestr.” “Nor have I,” the drakaina smiles, tilting her head. “It’s a unique name. But all of us have individual names. We don’t repeat names here,” she explains. “We are hatched in batches.”Batches? It reminds

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   046: The Navigator

[Carnelia] Leaving my father and the queen of the moon dragons behind, I turn and let myself fall away from their reality. Their voices call out to me, begging me to return, to wait, but they come to me slowly, out of sync with me as I become one with the darkness itself. I can’t wait to hear their words or heed their warnings. I need my mate. I need Primus. Now that I have found my true nature, I need him to hold me together before I shatter into a thousand insubstantial pieces of soul. But when I reach out to find him, to grasp our connection, my mind and spirit can’t get a solid hold. It's as if he’s so far away that I cannot reach him anymore. Maybe dying a second time has destroyed that connection. I need to find him, to reestablish our bond. To make him mine again. “Primus,” I speak into the cold dark around me as my body melts. “Wait for me.” Looking down at my hands, my glowing child is growing colder and colder as my skin fades to black. She cannot stay here with me. T
