Chapter 4

Author: Luna Bud
Every month, Mom transferred $10,000.

Dad gave $2,000 to Jack, leaving $8,000. The numbers matched perfectly, like a production line that had been laid out long ago.

Everyone in the family had their assigned role. I was the only product dissatisfied with its treatment off the assembly line.

Mom video-called me that night. She kept her voice low, probably afraid of waking her employer.

"Brielle, don't send those documents anywhere yet. Your dad was just being foolish. Men have business pressures. Playing a few rounds once in a while is normal."

"$8,000 a month for six months, and you call that once in a while?"

"He's still your father."

I asked her, "Then what about the $1,800 Jack took?"

Mom paused. "Jack has a girlfriend. He needs money. When he gets married and buys a house, which of those things won't cost money? You have financial aid at school. You can get by if you spend less.

"And besides, the family will have to rely on Jack to support us when we're old."

I understood.

Jack's future was the family's flagship project. It needed investment.

I was a disposable asset. I would get married sooner or later, and depreciation wouldn't affect the family's bottom line.

"Mom, when you send me $10,000 every month, is it because you want to make sure I have enough to eat, or because you want everyone to know you can afford to support a college student?"

Her breathing caught. Then the tears came instantly. She wiped her eyes and talked about how hard she worked away from home, how everything she had done in her life was for me and Jack.

Whenever she cried in the past, I would immediately apologize, as if all the suffering she had endured ultimately had to be settled on my account.

Only after she had cried herself out did I say, "The money you sent was real, but I never received any of it. You weren't unaware. You just didn't want to look into it."

Her crying stopped instantly. "Brielle, don't be so cruel. Jack is doing a clarification livestream tomorrow night, and his company executives will be watching. Just admit you were wrong. Say the family treated you well and you were the one who wasted the money. Once this blows over, I will make it up to you with another $200."

"What if I don't go?"

Her voice turned completely cold. "Are you really going to ruin Jack's job?"

I looked at the woman on my screen, the one I had missed for so many years. When I was little, and she went away for work, she always brought Jack sneakers and me hair clips. She used to say girls should look pretty.

Later, she was also the one who took me to get my hair cut short because hair clips couldn't be eaten or used to pay for textbooks.

"He's the one who put me on that livestream. He didn't leave himself a way out."

After hanging up, I opened my phone and revoked my access to the family-linked account. Finally, I deleted every payment QR code Dad had been sending me.

After I finished the series of actions, I suddenly realized my hands had been shaking the entire time.

My phone buzzed.

Jack had sent me the apology statement for tomorrow night's livestream, with one final line: "Cooperate. If the numbers on this stream are good, the company will make me a full-time streamer."

I stared at the message and suddenly laughed. So while he was stepping on my face to climb upward, he still thought I wasn't lying flat enough.

I replied: "Okay. Tomorrow night, I'll explain exactly where every dollar went, one transaction at a time."

He sent back a thumbs-up.

Clearly, he hadn't understood.

Then again, someone who used his sister as a stepping stone usually wouldn't think to look down and check whether the stepping stone had grown teeth.

Early the next morning, Ms. Snow pulled the cafeteria security footage.

In the complete video, a small dish of leftover food from the student ahead of me had touched my tray, causing the scale system to overcharge me by two cents.

I had merely said, "Ma'am, this isn't mine. Could you refund the two cents?"

The secretly recorded video had been edited to cut out everything before and after, leaving only the words, "Refund the two cents."

The cafeteria manager agreed to provide a written statement explaining what had happened.

The charity platform also found the supposed $10 refund.

That day, I saw a classmate from my year hospitalized with an illness and wanted to donate $10. My card balance was too low, so the payment failed.

Later, I used cash I'd earned from tutoring and asked a classmate to donate $20 on my behalf.

But the campus forum changed the story, claiming I had made a donation and then requested a refund.

After reviewing the materials, Ms. Snow's face looked grim. "Your work-study position will be reinstated. The campus forum has to delete the video and issue a public correction."

I nodded and copied the recording of Jack's livestream onto a USB drive.

Ms. Snow hesitated. "The school can only deal with your reputation on campus and your work-study position. When it comes to the money at home, you need to preserve the evidence yourself."

After my work-study position was reinstated, I went back to the cafeteria. The woman at the counter recognized me. The spoon in her hand paused. "Hey, I'm really sorry about what happened last time. I had no idea someone was filming.""It's okay. Just make sure the weight is right."When it was my turn to swipe my card, I instinctively looked at the cheapest vegetable meal.$3.80.Next to it was beef short rib with tomatoes, $12.60.I hesitated for two seconds. "I'll have the beef."The card reader beeped. My balance dropped by $12.60.Mia carried her tray over and sat across from me. She watched me stare at the receipt. "What, keeping track again?""Yep." I folded the receipt and tucked it into my ledger.I picked up a piece of beef and blew on it. "From now on, I'm only keeping track for myself."The beef wasn't especially tender. It was even a little tough to chew, but when I swallowed the first bite, warmth spread through my stomach.I didn't use the $66,800 for a spree

The next day, I received a transfer. The memo contained the words: "Enough. Stop this."I stared at it for a long time before accepting the payment. It was my money. There was no point refusing it just to prove I had principles. The last thing a poor person should pretend is that money means nothing.I saved the deposit record and replied: "Money received. I'm still checking the accounts."She called me almost immediately."I gave you all the money. What more do you want?" There was exhaustion in her voice, along with a sense of grievance. As though returning the money should automatically erase the harm they had caused."I want you to publicly admit that the $18,000 was a lie.""Brielle, I already made up the money to you.""This is money you owed me. It was never a favor."She fell silent. "Then what else do you want?""From now on, don't touch my accounts. Don't decide who my money should go to. And don't use my name to prove that we're a family.""I'm your mother.""T

I put the final spreadsheet in front of the camera.Over the past six months, Mom had transferred $60,000 to Dad. The amount that had actually reached me was just $1,200.Dad and Jack had withheld a total of $58,800.Then there was the $8,000 scholarship Dad had taken. The total amount I currently had complete documentation for was $66,800."I'll keep digging into the earlier accounts."When anger finally settles all the way to the bottom, it becomes strangely quiet.Dad sneered from the screen. "Dream on. The money's already gone. You're not getting it back. If you keep making a scene, don't ever call me your father again!"My hand still trembled slightly when he said that. When I came second in my class as a child, he said he'd disown me if my grades slipped again. When I refused to take the blame for Jack, he said he'd wasted twenty years raising me.When I got my college acceptance letter, the first thing he asked was whether I'd received a scholarship. Then he said girl

The livestream audience was still growing, but this time, the comments weren't attacking me anymore. They kept asking the same question over and over: "Where did that $18,000 actually go?"Jack finally reached out to pull the screen-sharing cable. His hands moved faster than the comments, but his reaction was one step behind the truth.Mia had been monitoring the stream from the table next to us. She immediately used a backup account to save a recording of the livestream."Enough!" Dad shouted from the screen. "Jack is at a critical point in his career right now! So what if he spent a little of your money? Once he makes something of himself, do you really think he won't take care of you?"I clicked to the next page."Did any of you ever ask me whether I was willing to sacrifice what I have today to invest in Jack's future?"I displayed the messages Dad had sent me over the past six months."You spent $4.60 on lunch? What did you eat?""Stomach medicine isn't a necessity. Stop

After leaving the office, I went to the bank and opened a new account. The card cutter snapped, slicing my old card cleanly in two. I stared at the broken halves for a long time.Mia asked if it felt good.I shook my head. "Like cutting the umbilical cord.""Fair enough." She handed me the new card. "But you're twenty. You can't keep letting your dad supply you with oxygen through online banking."That afternoon, Jack posted a preview for the livestream. The title read: "The $18,000-a-Month Refund Warrior Finally Agrees to Apologize to Her Parents."The number of people who reserved spots quickly passed 10,000.Jack excitedly messaged me, telling me to dress simply and, preferably, not wear makeup so I would look remorseful. He was overthinking it.A complexion raised on $200 a month was more convincing than any pity filter. Before the livestream began, Mom sent me another voice message. "If Jack gets hired full-time this time, his salary will go up quite a bit. Once he makes
