Chapter 60

KLAUS

"I don't believe in fate."

"You don't believe in a lot of things. Doesn't make them less real." Shawn sobered slightly. "Just... be careful, okay? I've known you long enough to know when you're in over your head. And Klaus? You are definitely in over your head."

We drank in silence for a while, and I tried not to think about how right Shawn was. Tried not to replay every moment of the day—Ambelyn walking into my office in that navy suit, the way she'd handled the Chen brothers, the coffee stain on her collar that I'd wanted to reach out and wipe away.

The way she'd looked at me a few times when she thought I wasn't paying attention—with something that might have been memory, or longing, or just exhaustion from a chaotic first day.

"For what it's worth," Shawn said eventually, "I think you made the right call hiring her. She's good. Really good. The team already respects her, which is rare for a first day. And Janet Xu from Meridian actually emailed me to say she's imp

Chapter 76AMBERLYN I blinked, surprised. Klaus had pulled me into every meeting this week, had specifically said he wanted me present for high-level discussions. Why would this one be different?"Are you sure?" I asked. "If she's an investor discussing Westfield, I should probably be there to take notes—""Celine wouldn't appreciate an outsider joining us," Klaus interrupted, his voice firm. "She's... particular about privacy. It's better if I handle this alone."Outsider. The word stung more than it should have, especially given the context. I was his assistant. Being in meetings was literally my job. But apparently not this meeting. Not with Celine Ashford, whoever she was."Of course," I said, keeping my voice carefully neutral even as something uncomfortable twisted in my chest. "Should I reschedule your two o'clock to accommodate the extended lunch?""Yes. Push everything back an hour. And if anything urgent comes up, text me, but otherwise I'd prefer not to be interrupted." Chapter 75AMBERLYN The week had settled into a rhythm that felt almost normal, if I ignored the underlying current of tension that hummed between Klaus and me every time we were in the same room. We'd both committed—silently, unanimously—to maintaining strict professional boundaries. No more elevator confessions. No more lingering looks. No more moments that felt too charged, too dangerous, too much like the beginning of something we couldn't afford to start. It was working. Mostly.I arrived at eight every morning with Klaus's coffee—black, two sugars—and my own vanilla latte that was probably more sugar than coffee. We reviewed his schedule, discussed priorities, coordinated meetings. I sat in on high-level discussions, took meticulous notes, managed the constant chaos of his calendar with increasing efficiency.By Wednesday, I'd reorganized his entire filing system. By Thursday, I'd streamlined his email management protocol. By Friday, three different executives had complimented

Chapter 74THOMAS"Why not?""Because—" I broke off, struggling to articulate something I barely understood myself. "Because it's not about them. It's about me. About not being the kind of man who gets discarded like garbage, who gets replaced with someone better.""You're not being replaced, Thomas. You're being left behind. There's a difference." Veronica set down her wine glass. "And if you keep pursuing this, if you keep trying to control people who have every right to move on from you, you're going to lose more than just Ambelyn and Iniko.""What's that supposed to mean?""It means I'm tired." She said it quietly, but the words hit like a physical blow. "I'm tired of being the other woman. I'm tired of waiting for you to be emotionally available when you're so obsessed with your ex-wife that you can barely see me. I'm tired of raising Lucas while you obsess over a child that might not even be yours.""Veronica—""No. Let me finish." She held up a hand. "I've been patient. I've b

Chapter 73THOMASAmbelyn thought she could just walk away from me, take everything, and start fresh with Thorne's backing? She was delusional. I was Thomas Blackwood. My family owned half this city's commercial real estate. I had connections, resources, power that she couldn't even comprehend. And I wasn't going to let some upstart tech CEO and my ungrateful ex-wife make a fool of me without consequences.I pulled out my phone, ignoring the blood smearing across the screen from my injured hand. Richard Donovan's number was still in my recent calls. I hit dial, not caring that it was after six and he was probably having dinner with his family. He answered on the third ring. "Thomas. I was going to call you tomorrow—""I need you to do something for me," I interrupted. "I need you to find out everything about Klaus Thorne's custody arrangement with his daughter. Every detail. Who has rights, who makes decisions, whether there are any vulnerabilities we can exploit."Silence on the othe

Chapter 72THOMASI made it exactly three steps into my house before I grabbed the first thing my hand touched—an expensive crystal vase Eleanor had given us as a wedding gift—and hurled it across the foyer. It shattered against the marble floor with a satisfying crash that did nothing to ease the rage burning through my veins."Fuck!" The word exploded from me as I kicked at the fragments, sending them skittering across the polished stone.Five years. Five goddamn years I'd provided for that ungrateful little bastard. Given him a home, paid his medical bills, tolerated his existence in my house. And this was how he repaid me? By publicly disowning me? By calling Klaus Thorne—Klaus fucking Thorne—"Dad" right there in Principal Holloway's office?I grabbed another vase from the hallway table and sent it after the first. The crash was deeply satisfying, but it wasn't enough. Nothing was enough to quell the humiliation burning through me like acid. The way Iniko had looked at me—like I w

Chapter 71NIKLAUS"Which we agreed was irrelevant," I interrupted."Is it, though?" Ambelyn challenged. "Because standing here right now, having this conversation, it doesn't feel irrelevant. It feels very present."The air between us crackled with tension—the kind that had nothing to do with professional boundaries and everything to do with the chemistry that had never quite faded."What do you want me to say, Ambelyn?" I asked quietly. "That I haven't thought about college? That watching you work yesterday didn't remind me of why I was so drawn to you in the first place? I'd be lying.""Don't." Her voice was sharp. "Don't go there. We can't go there.""I'm not going anywhere. I'm simply acknowledging what exists." I straightened from the desk but didn't move closer. "But you're right—we need boundaries. Professional ones. For both our sakes.""And for the children's sakes," Ambelyn added. "They're already getting attached. Cassidy clearly adores Iniko, and Iniko—" She smiled sadly.
