Chapter 2

Author: Serein M
My father snorted.

"Banish us? She wouldn't dare!" he snarled. His voice dripped with an arrogant confidence. "We're her parents! Isolde is dying. What's a small sacrifice for her sister to make? How can she be so petty over a single ceremony!"

I floated at the ceiling, watching them. Expressionless.

A bitter laugh echoed in my soul.

Cold-blooded?

It's almost funny. I was almost glad I was dead.

If I were alive, hearing my own father say that… how much would that have hurt?

Now, they just looked pathetic.

Two weeks later, the vacation was over.

The family returned to the Silver Creek Pack lands.

Isolde, of course, moved in with Kian. Right into the Alpha's wing of the Pack House.

She didn't just take my place. She'd even dug out my favorite silk lounge set and was wearing it like she owned the place.

Kian walked through the door.

He tore at his tie, his eyes scanning the hall.

My slippers weren't by the door. The air didn't have my scent.

He walked all the way to the back garden. To my sunroom. And just… stared. His eyes were empty.

That garden was my sanctuary. I grew rare wolfsbane antidotes there. I was the Pack Healer. It took me three years to cultivate them.

"Kian, what are you looking at?"

Isolde padded over, barefoot. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind.

She followed his gaze to the garden and wrinkled her nose in disgust.

"This whole place smells like Freya. It’s disgusting." She looked up, her eyes instantly wet with fake tears. Her voice was a whiny, cloying mess. "Kian, I'm your Luna now, right? Can't you tear this down? Build me a private spa instead?"

Kian's jaw tightened. He pushed her off without a second thought.

"No. Freya is still my Mate. This is her life's work. No one touches it."

"But she didn't even come to our ceremony! She doesn't respect you!"

Isolde clutched her chest, gasping for air. Tears streamed down her face.

"How many days do I have left with this broken body? The doctor said the soil from these herbs could make my infection worse… Do you still love her? Are you just waiting for me to die?"

Looking at her fragile, swaying act, the resistance in Kian's eyes faded into weary defeat.

"Stop crying." He closed his eyes, his voice strained. "I'll have the workers move the herbs to the greenhouse. They won't be damaged."

But less than a day later, Isolde used the "risk of infection" as an excuse. She ordered the workers to destroy the entire sunroom.

My precious herbs, my hard work, were ripped out by the roots and thrown in the mud like trash.

The space that held my pride was gone. Erased.

Kian stood in the wreckage. His face was a thundercloud. His fists were clenched so tight his knuckles were white. But he didn't say a word to the "weak" Isolde.

Just as a worker was about to toss my shelving unit, Kian lunged forward.

He snatched a small, obsidian wolf carving from the shelf. He shoved it deep into his coat pocket.

It was the gift I carved for him when we first confirmed our bond.

I watched his sneaky, self-deceiving little act. It was pathetic.

The next day, top floor of Pack HQ. The conference room.

The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. No one dared to breathe.

"Alpha, the northern border treaty is falling apart," the Beta said, wiping sweat from his brow. His voice shook. "They're insisting on working with Freya, but she's been missing for two weeks. She's missed key meetings. They think we're not serious. They're about to pull out."

Kian's face went white with rage.

CRACK!

He slammed his fist on the conference table. Wood splintered. A deep crack shot across the surface.

"How long is she going to hide?!"

Kian gritted his teeth. His Alpha power flared, not from anger, but from pure, unadulterated panic.

"She wants to use work to force my hand? Fine. She's got it."

He yanked a laptop towards him. Logged into the Pack's internal network. His fingers hammered the keyboard.

Kian hit 'Send'. The all-pack message flashed on the screen.

Freya is stripped of her titles. She is no longer our Healer. She has nothing until she crawls back and apologizes.

He leaned back heavily in his chair, covering his face with his hands.

He thought this would break me.

He thought cutting off my power, my status, would force me to come crawling back to him.

He thought in a few days, I'd storm into his office, screaming at him. And he could finally pull me into his arms.

I slowly lowered my head. I brought my transparent hand to my flat stomach.

A life was once growing here. Barely a month old.

The purest Alpha bloodline.

I was going to put the pregnancy test on his pillow that night. The world's greatest surprise.

Now… there would be no more surprises.

The years passed under the redwood tree. Its leaves fell and grew back, time and time again.Zara visited almost every month. The lines of maturity began to show on her face. One day, she leaned against the trunk, clutching a document. Her knuckles were white."Freya, guess what," she said. Her voice held a cruel kind of satisfaction. "Isolde's dead."The wind whispered through the branches."You can't imagine how brutal the barrens are," Zara said calmly, as if it were nothing. "That sickness she faked? It became real. No medicine. No one to care for her. She just rotted away out there."Zara looked down at the paper and read. "Her wolf faded completely. Her body was covered in sores. She died in agony."I leaned against the tree, my soul scattering and reforming with the breeze. No joy. No regret.Just a sense of finality. It was over.A few months later, Zara came to the woods holding a strange man's hand.He was tall, with kind eyes that looked at Zara with pure adoration."Freya,

The rain hadn't stopped. Funeral candles flickered in the dark hall.A small figure, hidden by the night, crept toward my coffin. It was Zara. Her eyes were swollen, but her movements were sharp. All by herself, using her powerful Beta strength, she heaved up one end of the heavy coffin and began to drag it outside.Rain and sweat dripped from her chin.I floated beside her, watching her use her own body to shield the coffin from the downpour."Freya, do you remember?" she whispered as she walked, talking to me, talking to herself. "When I was a kid, I was so weak. The other pups always picked on me. It was you. You charged in, you took that claw swipe for me.""You even gave me your own healing salve."She stopped, leaning against the coffin, and slid to the ground in the mud. She finally broke down, sobbing."Why… why did it have to be you…"I reached out my transparent hand, stroking her wet hair again and again. She couldn't feel it, but it was like she sensed something. She slowly

In the days that followed, Isolde was a nervous wreck. Kian had cut her off completely."The purest Alpha bloodline."The medical officer's voice exploded in the Council room."She was carrying a pup. Barely a month old."My mother's body swayed. She fainted, hitting the floor. My father moved to catch her, but his own legs gave out. They both collapsed in a heap on the cold tile.Kian froze. He looked like a statue about to crumble."My… pup…" His voice was shattered. He spun around and punched the wall.CRACK! A bloody fissure appeared in the plaster as his fist connected. He didn't stop. He hit it again. And again. Like a madman. Until his knuckles were pulp and blood streamed down the wall."Freya… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…"His howl of grief and pain echoed through the entire territory. Far in the distance, the pack wolves felt their Alpha's despair and answered with a chorus of mournful howls.A few days later, the captured Rogue, Rhys, confessed everything."Isolde's sickness was

The phone hit the floor. The screen shattered. Kian collapsed. His legs simply gave out.My mother scrambled for the phone, her voice a mangled wreck. "You found her? Where? Are you sure it's her?"The captain repeated the address. All the blood drained from my mother's face. She lunged at Kian, shaking his shoulders like a madwoman. "Get up! What good is collapsing now! Go look! Go prove it's not Freya!"They stumbled their way to the pack's medical center.I floated above them, watching this "urgency" that had come a month too late. The morgue was freezing.Kian’s eyes were blood-red. His hand shook so badly he could barely grip the edge of the white sheet. He ripped it back.I looked at my own corpse. The skin, torn by beasts, was a mess of black and purple veins from the Wolfsbane. It had decayed impossibly fast. My features were unrecognizable. My mother let out a strangled scream and collapsed."Not her! That's not her!" She shook her head wildly, digging her nails into her own a

Stripping me of my duties didn't give Kian the satisfaction he expected. For the next few days, he was like a man possessed. Calling my phone. Sending texts. Over and over."Freya, pick up.""Haven't you been dramatic long enough?""Just come back. I'll restore your titles. I won't let Isolde touch your things again."By the end, he'd even swallowed his Alpha pride. His tone was almost begging."Freya, I can't stand this goddamn silence. Please. Just answer me."I floated behind him, watching this pathetic, too-late display. I felt nothing."Honey, what are you looking at?"Isolde walked in. She carried a cup of hot black coffee. Her cheeks were flushed, her steps light. Her voice was sickly sweet.Kian flinched like a thief caught in the act. He slammed his phone face down on the table. He turned to give her a half-hearted hug, but his eyes froze on her neck. His pupils shrank. "Is that the Luna Stone? Why do you have it?"I looked down at my own empty, transparent chest. That necklac
