VICTORIA

"Hey, give me that!"

I reached out and grabbed a plate from the hands of one of the maids who wanted to use it to take her food. For some reason, we both loved the plate and she wanted to hide it, thinking I wouldn't see her.

"Give it back, Rach! It's mine today. I found it first." She argued but I wasn't going to give it back; not after it had already entered my hands.

"It's not about who gets it first," I said in my defence. "It's about who holds it last and that happens to be me. Better luck next time."

The other maids laughed and tapped her back to let her know that she lost. "Next time, Rach. I'll show you," she said as she returned to washing the dishes.

We kept working and chattering at the same time. We were so into what we were doing that we didn't notice the chief maid step into the kitchen. She must have been surprised by what she saw as her countenance told the whole story.
