Most of the women in the cage were dressed in black and gray old fashioned clothes, but not in a way that made them look ridiculous. Most wore long dresses that reached their ankles, with fitted bodices and full skirts that moved around their legs when they walked. Some had high collars and long sleeves, while others wore simple blouses tucked into long skirts. The fabric looked heavy and almost every outfit had some kind of silver detail sewn into it.

The men wore the same colors, although their clothes were different. Loose shirts, animal skin vests, high waisted trousers and boots. The silver jewellery was everywhere too. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings and chains around their throats. It was strange seeing so many people dressed like they had stepped out of another century, especially when there were trucks, electricity and modern buildings all around us.

I kept yelling at the guards to let us out until one lady pulled at my arm.

She was dressed differently than the rest. She had on a dark gray skirt trimmed with small white pearls at the hem and what looked like a bikini top, also with the same pearls. The only silver jewellery she had were the bangles on both arms. Her hair was tied up in a bun and had zero pins on it.

“Stop doing that,” she said, nodding toward the bars. “It won’t help.”

Another one said something in that language I didn’t understand, making a few others laugh. They probably thought I was an idiot. I wouldn’t exactly argue.

“It’s illegal to auction people,” I muttered.

“Auction?” The woman with the bikini top raised her brow.

“Yeah, you know.” I waved my hands ridiculously in the air. “Sell. Bid. Auction.”

The other women burst out laughing like I’d said something completely insane.

“I know what an auction is.” She smiled. “And I can promise you this isn’t it.”

“What is it then?” Penelope asked from the corner.

“The bride hunt.” The woman answered without batting an eyelash.

“The what?” I blinked.

“Oh Lord.” She sighed. “You don’t have much time. When the cage opens, you run and you hope that a good man catches y—”

The sound of something hitting the bars and then people in the tents screaming and yelling cut her off.

I turned my head to see a number of big, shirtless men entering the clearing and walking toward the stage.

The women continued screaming and clapping.

Then I saw him.

He was big. Bigger than most of the men.

He was also shirtless and wearing shorts made of animal skin. It only covered the important parts. Everything else was on display. The big, toned thighs, the broad shoulders and chest, the stomach and abs marred with old, gray scars.

The cuts looked like they had been deep once upon a time.

He was magnificent.

He stepped onto the raised platform and went straight to the chair that looked like the throne and sat. The crowd cheered again.

There was not a single photo of him in the history books but I knew exactly who he was. The chair said it all.

The King and the Dragon Commander.

He was the most powerful man in Vaelryth, if not the whole world, and he was younger than I thought he would be. Or at least he looked younger than I expected.

My eyes travelled down his body and landed on his bare feet. Bare. As in no shoes at all. Not even sandals. It was a strange way for a king to dress but it fit with the rest of his barely there attire.

He didn’t even bother to wear their native colors.

My gaze travelled back up and I noticed the scar running across his left cheek, making him look even more intimidating. I bet he could break skulls with his bare hands.

“Hey,” the other woman’s voice snapped behind me.

I turned back to her.

Most of them were watching the stage and appeared not to care about the rest of the conversation anymore.

“What’s the bride hunt?” I asked again.

The name alone sounded like something I didn’t want to be a part of.

“When the cage falls, you run,” she warned. “Turn if you are a werewolf, which I’m guessing you are. If you can get away you are free. But if one of the men catches you, you are their bride, you are their wife. It’s the Vaelryth tradition. You cannot escape it. You better run fast or pay for a good man.”

Holy fucking shit.

I stared at her.

“So you’re telling me we’re supposed to run around while a bunch of men chase us?” I asked, looking around the cage.

“Exactly.” The woman shrugged like she’d just told me we were having dinner.

“And if they catch us, we belong to them?” I couldn’t believe it.

She looked at me like the answer should’ve been obvious.

My stomach twisted. I shook my head. “I’m not marrying some stranger just because he caught me.”

A few women laughed.

They were Vaelryth. This was their way. That explained why they were so excited. Like they’d dreamed of this their entire lives. Only a few looked frightened. Only outsiders.

Then a deep horn sounded.

The woman beside me grabbed the bars.

“Get ready,” she whispered.

A loud metallic groan came from above us.

I looked up. The entire roof of the cage was moving. I thought it was some kind of mechanism opening the cage but the floor beneath my feet dropped.

Women screamed.

I fell forward and hit the ground hard, barely catching myself with my hands. Someone stepped over me. A male omega crashed into my shoulder.

Everyone started running.

Penelope looked at me. Her eyes were wide with fear. “Anna!” she screamed.

I didn’t know what to do. I looked toward the clearing. People were cheering.

The shirtless men were mounting horses.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Penelope looked over her shoulder, then back at me. And she ran.

“Penelope!” I shouted after her.

She didn’t stop.

I scrambled to my feet and ran after her.

I had no idea where I was going. I only knew one thing.

Don’t get caught.

His gigantic hand came around my waist and a second later, I was in his arms. They were all watching us. They were all watching me. The dragons were still flying above the tents but they didn’t seem to care anymore. My first instinct was to kick and scream and give him hell but the size and strength of his arms made it very clear that he could snap me like a twig. Puncho held the entrance to the tent open and the King led us inside. It dawned on me then that I didn’t even know his name. The first thing that registered was the bed. A whole fucking bed that belonged in a house, with white sheets, white pillows, and different kinds of flowers scattered on top of it. The floor in the tent was made of this sleek, black sheet that looked like leather. He threw me on the bed like a sack of potatoes. Then he stepped away and stood at the edge, his gaze locked on my probably sick looking one, because yeah, I felt sick. My stomach wouldn’t stop turning and I still felt like I wanted to vomi

My hair was tied up and spread like a peacock’s tail. I had dark green, red, and white diamond pins decorating the tail. It was ridiculously heavy but it was also beautiful. I looked like a Queen. The makeup was less extravagant. Just the concealer hiding the bruise from Aria’s slap, the gray eye shadow to match my outfit and the cherry red lipstick. The bangles on my arms were silver and gold. The heavy necklace was made of gold and the diamonds to match my hair. I had to hide my mother’s chain under it and put the ring on my right finger because Mira insisted that only the King’s rings were allowed on my left. R. I. N. G. S. Rings, plural. I had three silver rings with big ass diamonds on my left fingers. The door opened and Mira walked back in with a short, bulky man. He had on reading glasses, faded blue jeans that looked like they belonged in a different time and a raggedy vest that was loose on his torso. The shoes looked just as old as everything else on him. He smiled as h

I grabbed the skirt of the dress and lifted it with one hand while using the other to shove branches out of my way. I could hear horses thundering the forest behind me. I didn’t know where I was going and I didn’t care. Branches kept slapping against my face as I pushed through the trees. My lungs were already burning. “Run!” someone screamed.I looked over my shoulder. A woman was running a few feet behind me. She had tears streaming down her face, her long black dress bunched around her thighs as she struggled through the trees. A horse appeared behind her. The man riding it reached down and his hand closed around her waist. She screamed as he lifted her clean off the ground.I stumbled but kept running.“Come on,” I whispered to my wolf. Nothing.I pushed harder. “Come out.”Still nothing.I tried to shift, but pain tore through my bones. I gasped and nearly fell. My legs buckled beneath me but I caught myself against a tree and forced myself forward.“Please.” I could feel my w

Something sharp slowly pulled me from sleep.I opened my eyes to see a stick poking me. The side of my head was throbbing. I lifted my hand and touched the side of my skull. I felt thick wetness there and my hand came back covered in drying blood. That explained the killer headache I had.I lifted my gaze to look at the owner of the stick. It was a boy who didn’t look much older than me. He had blonde hair, green eyes, a full mouth, and he was wearing silk, which told me that he was either an omega or a witch. He wasn’t pale like a vampire, and alphas and betas would never dare wear silk. Then I noticed that we were moving. I quickly sat up, making my head spin. We were in the back of a moving truck. There were two other girls sleeping beside the boy. They looked just as young. One a redhead, the other dark haired.“Where are we?” I asked. The boy shrugged but didn’t answer.I was still wearing Aria’s dress. But it was now torn and dirty. It looked nothing like the white it once was.

I was standing near the podium, waiting for Dominic to announce that I was his mate. Aria was standing beside me with her arms folded. I knew she was happy for me but she somehow looked like she’d rather be somewhere else. Where she would want to be in this fateful moment was beyond me. We all knew how much I loved Nic and how long I’ve waited for this moment. Since our sixteenth birthday when Nic took one look at me in the school theatre and growled the word that every girl wanted the future alpha of our pack to growl at them. “Mate.”My heart instantly whipped with joy then. I’d never dreamed of becoming the Luna but the thought of it changed my entire life plan in that single moment. “Can you stop fidgeting.” Aria’s irritated voice pulled me back to the present. “Sorry,” I whispered and tried to stand still. I failed. “I’m just so excited. Do you understand what this means? This means that Ronnie will never beat me again. Ronnie was my awful stepfather. The man never had a d
