Elara's POV

Kael found me on the porch two mornings later, watching the sun burn the mist off the tree line, and when he sat down beside me on the wooden step, he was quiet for a long moment before he finally spoke, like he'd been turning something over in his mind and hadn't quite decided how to say it.

"I think it's time you saw Nightfall Hollow properly," he said. "The real kingdom, not just this cottage tucked away in the woods where I've been keeping you hidden like a secret."

Something in my chest fluttered at the idea, equal parts excitement and nerves, because as much as the cottage had started to feel safe, it was still a hiding place, and some part of me had started to wonder what it would mean to step fully into whatever life was waiting for me on the other side of that hiding.

"Is it safe?" I asked. "After everything Nyra found about Wren, after Alpha Cross at the border, I thought staying out of sight was the plan."

"It was the plan when we didn't know how far the word had already spread." Kael's expression turned more serious, the easy warmth from a moment ago giving way to something more careful. "But hiding you away only works until it doesn't, and I'd rather you enter my kingdom as my honored guest, under my protection, in front of witnesses who answer to me, than have someone discover you're here and start wondering why their King felt the need to keep you a secret in the first place."

"You think people are already wondering that."

"I think Alpha Cross wasn't the only one who left that border encounter with questions," he said. "And I'd rather answer those questions on my terms, in my own court, than let rumors answer them for me."

I thought about it for a long moment, watching the mist continue to burn away between the trees, and I found myself nodding before I'd fully finished weighing the fear against the strange, steady pull toward wanting to see the place that had shaped him into the man sitting beside me.

"All right," I said. "Take me to your kingdom, then."

The journey to Nightfall Hollow took the better part of the day, first on foot through woods that grew steadily darker and older the further we walked, ancient trees with trunks wider than the pack house back home, and then along a stone road that appeared almost out of nowhere, worn smooth by centuries of travel, winding up through hills toward walls I could see rising in the distance long before we reached them.

The kingdom itself took my breath away in a way I hadn't expected, dark stone buildings that somehow managed to look both imposing and beautiful at once, ivy climbing the walls in places, lanterns already being lit along the main road even though the sun hadn't fully set, and everywhere I looked, Lycans going about their evening, pausing what they were doing to watch us pass with expressions ranging from curious to openly stunned.

"They're staring," I murmured, resisting the urge to shrink smaller under all those eyes, an old habit I'd been trying to unlearn since the night in the forest.

"They're staring because I've never brought anyone here," Kael said quietly, close enough that only I could hear him. "In over a hundred years, Elara, you're the first person I've walked through these gates beside, rather than in front of or behind. That means something to them, even if they don't fully understand what yet."

The weight of that settled over me as we continued through the winding streets, up toward a castle that looked carved directly out of the mountainside behind it, dark stone softened by warm light glowing from dozens of windows, and I found myself gripping Kael's hand a little tighter, grateful for the steady warmth of it as we climbed the wide stone steps toward the entrance.

Soren met us just inside the doors, and behind him stood a small gathering of what I assumed were members of Kael's court, older Lycans with sharp, assessing eyes that swept over me with the kind of scrutiny that made my spine straighten on instinct, refusing to let myself flinch under their attention the way I might have a few weeks ago.

"My King," one of them said, stepping forward, an older man with silver threading through his dark hair and lines around his eyes that spoke of decades spent watching over Kael's kingdom. "We've been expecting your return. And your guest, it seems, has already become the subject of considerable conversation."

"Elder Mathis." Kael's voice carried a note of careful formality I hadn't heard from him before, the warmth from the walk here tucked neatly away behind something more guarded. "This is Elara Ashwood. She'll be staying in the castle as my honored guest, under my full protection, for as long as she wishes to remain."

Elder Mathis's gaze moved to me, and though his expression stayed politely neutral, there was something underneath it, calculating and careful, that reminded me uncomfortably of the way Alpha Cross had looked at me right before he asked to see my wrist.

"Welcome to Nightfall Hollow, Elara Ashwood," Elder Mathis said, his voice smooth and pleasant in a way that didn't quite match the sharpness in his eyes. "I do hope you'll forgive the court's curiosity. It isn't every day our King brings home a guest who's already caused quite so much talk among the neighboring packs."

"I'll try not to disappoint everyone's expectations," I said, keeping my voice steady, and something flickered across Mathis's face, surprise maybe, at finding more backbone than he'd apparently expected from a rejected omega with a mysterious mark.

Kael's hand tightened slightly around mine, a small, grounding pressure, and when I glanced at him, there was something proud in the look he gave me, quiet and warm despite the formal audience surrounding us.

"Come," he said. "Let me show you the rest of your new home before the whole court decides to introduce themselves at once."

Elara's POVThe letter sat unopened on the table for a long moment, all of us simply staring at it like it might change shape if we looked away, and I found myself reaching for it slowly, my hands not quite steady as I finally broke the unfamiliar seal, pressed with an emblem I didn't recognize, a sun rising over waves."Read it aloud," Kael said quietly, his hand finding the small of my back, steady and grounding.I cleared my throat and began, the formal, careful language of the letter settling strange and heavy into the quiet library.*To Elara Ashwood, now Elara Draven, Queen of Nightfall Hollow. Word has reached our shores of the curse broken within your husband's bloodline, and of the manner in which it was achieved. This news, combined with certain details regarding your origins that have recently come to our attention, compels us to ask directly what we have wondered for over two decades. Are you the daughter of Marielle Sunhaven, who vanished from our kingdom before her arran

Elara's POVWe stayed in Ashwood territory for three more days, longer than I'd originally planned, though something about sitting with Alpha Cross through his slow decline felt important in a way I hadn't expected when Ryker's letter first arrived, less about him and more about giving myself the chance to close a door properly instead of leaving it hanging open the rest of my life."Do you think he'll recover," Kael asked quietly, the evening before we planned to return to Nightfall Hollow, both of us sitting on the small balcony outside the guest room the pack had prepared for us."I don't know," I admitted. "Nyra said guilt like that doesn't always resolve simply because someone finally speaks it aloud. Sometimes the body's already too worn down by the years of carrying it silently.""How do you feel about that possibility?"I considered the question honestly, turning it over before answering. "Strange. I thought I'd feel some kind of satisfaction, watching him face consequences af

Elara's POVI opened Ryker's letter in the quiet of the library, Kael reading through yet another diplomatic request beside me, and something in the careful, uneven handwriting told me before I'd even finished the first line that this wasn't simply another update on his father's cooperation with the northern packs."My father is dying. Not from illness, not from any attack, but from something the healers here can't explain, a weakness that's settled into him since the night he finally told the northern packs everything he knew. They say it looks like the wolf itself is losing its hold on him, faster than old age alone should account for. I don't know what this means, or whether it connects to anything you and Nyra might understand better than our own pack healers do, but I didn't know who else to ask.I read it twice, my stomach tightening with an unexpected complexity of feeling, because whatever cruelty Alpha Cross had shown me, whatever fear and ambition had driven decades of watc

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 48

Elara's POVWord of the curse breaking spread through Nightfall Hollow before the sun had even fully risen, servants and guards alike unable to contain their disbelief and joy once Nyra confirmed what she'd witnessed, and by midmorning, the castle had transformed into something I'd never quite seen before, genuine, unrestrained celebration replacing the careful, watchful tension that had lived in these halls for as long as I'd known them."A hundred years," Soren kept repeating throughout the morning, shaking his head like he still couldn't quite believe it himself, pulling Kael into a rough embrace that had nothing formal or careful about it at all. "A hundred years, and it took one omega from a small pack barely six months to undo what every healer and scholar in three kingdoms couldn't manage in a century.""She's not just an omega," Kael said, though there was no correction in his tone, only warmth, and pride, and something achingly soft as he looked at me across the room. "She's

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 47

Elara's POVNyra found me in the library on a bright, unremarkable afternoon, several weeks after Selene's sentencing had finally closed that long chapter of fear, and the careful, thoughtful expression on her face told me immediately that whatever she'd come to discuss carried real weight, even if the danger behind it had nothing to do with old enemies or ancient conspiracies."I want to examine the mark again," she said, settling into the chair across from mine. "Properly, now that things have quieted enough to actually study it without the pressure of an active threat clouding every observation. I've been curious for weeks whether the bond has changed since the wedding, now that the vows are fully sealed."I held out my wrist without hesitation, watching her turn it carefully in the afternoon light, tracing the familiar crescent moon and thorns with the same careful attention she'd shown that very first night in the cottage, though her expression this time carried curiosity rather

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 46

Elara's POVThe ride back to Nightfall Hollow felt entirely different from the tense journey north, the guards moving with visible relief despite the exhaustion carved into every face, Selene and her remaining followers bound and escorted at the center of our group, and though the danger that had shadowed us for weeks finally felt like it was loosening its grip, I found myself watching her carefully throughout the ride, unable to fully trust the quiet resignation she'd shown in the ruin."You keep looking back at her," Kael observed quietly, riding close beside me as the first real light of morning spread gold across the frosted fields."I keep waiting for it to feel finished," I admitted. "We caught her. She surrendered. And yet something in my chest still feels like it's bracing for one more thing to go wrong.""That's fair," he said. "We've been bracing for months. It doesn't simply stop because the danger has passed. Give it time, Elara. I imagine it'll take both of us a while to
