Elara's POV

Mira arrived at the cottage three days later, escorted by Tobias through the back trails that avoided the main border crossing, and the moment I saw her step through the door, mud on her boots and worry written all over her face, I crossed the room and pulled her into a hug so tight she made a small surprised sound against my shoulder.

"You're alive," she said, pulling back just enough to look at me, her hands gripping my arms like she needed to check for herself that I was really standing there in one piece.

"Tobias's message said you were safe, but I've spent three days imagining every terrible thing that could have happened to you out here."

"I'm alive. I'm safe." I squeezed her hands, and something in my chest loosened at the sight of her familiar face, the one piece of my old life that had followed me into this strange new one without asking anything of me in return. "I'm sorry I couldn't send word sooner. Things have been complicated."

"Complicated." Mira's eyebrows rose as her gaze swept the cottage, taking in the fine furniture, the quiet warmth of the fire, and landing finally on Kael, who stood near the window giving us space but watching the reunion with obvious interest.

"Elara, that's the Lycan King standing in the kitchen.

When you said things got complicated, I assumed you meant you were hiding in a cave somewhere, not that you'd apparently moved into a fairy tale."

Despite everything, I laughed, the sound surprising me with how easy it came, and Kael's mouth twitched like he was fighting his own smile at Mira's bluntness.

"It's a long story," I said.

"I have time. I told the pack I was visiting my cousin two territories over. I'm not due back for a week." Mira sat herself down at the table without waiting for an invitation, the same way she'd always done since we were children, comfortable enough in my presence to make herself at home wherever I was.

"So talk. All of it. Don't leave anything out, especially not whatever's happening with your wrist, because I saw you rubbing it just now like it hurts."

I glanced at Kael, and he gave me a small nod, like he trusted my judgment on how much to share with the one person who had never once made me feel small.

So I told her everything. The rogue attack, the mark, Nyra's records about Wren, the curse, Alpha Cross showing up at the border with warriors and thinly veiled threats.

Mira listened without interrupting, which was unusual for her, her expression shifting from shock to fury to something softer as the story went on, and by the time I finished, she reached over and took my hand, turning my wrist gently to study the mark for herself.

"A goddess's bloodline," she said quietly. "All this time, and nobody knew. Not even you."

"Nobody knew," I confirmed. "I spent my whole life being told I wasn't enough, Mira. And it turns out I might be the reason a curse gets broken, or the reason an entire kingdom falls apart, depending on who gets to me first."

"Ryker rejected the most important woman in three territories," Mira said, and there was something fierce and satisfied in the way she said it, enough that Kael actually laughed under his breath from across the room. "I hope he chokes on that for the rest of his life."

"Mira."

"I'm serious. Let him live with it." She squeezed my hand once, then let it go, her expression turning more serious. "But Elara, if word is already spreading like you said, you need to be careful.

My pack isn't the only one that's going to come looking, and not everyone who comes looking is going to care whether you say yes or no to whatever they want from you."

"I know." The weight of that truth had been sitting in my chest since the day Nyra found the scroll about Wren. "That's why I need you to be careful too. If anyone asks where I am, if anyone even suspects you know more than you're saying, I need you to think of yourself first. I can't lose you over this."

Mira's expression softened, and she reached out to squeeze my hand one more time. "You're not going to lose me. I've survived worse than nosy Alphas asking questions.

Besides," she glanced toward Kael with a small, knowing smile, "someone needs to make sure the Lycan King treats you properly.

I didn't spend three days worrying myself sick just to hand that job over to a healer with sharp eyes and no sense of humor."

"I heard that," Nyra called from the next room, and Mira grinned, unbothered, the first real moment of lightness the cottage had seen in days.

Later that evening, after Mira had settled into the small guest room Nyra prepared for her, I found Kael standing outside on the narrow porch, looking out at the tree line where the sun was just beginning to set behind the branches, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and gold.

"She's good for you," he said, without turning around. "I can see why you wanted her here."

"She's the only family I have left that actually feels like family." I came to stand beside him, close enough that our shoulders nearly touched, the mark on my wrist warm against the cool evening air. "Thank you. For letting her come. For trusting me to decide who to tell."

"You don't need my permission to decide things like that, Elara." He turned to look at me then, the last light of the sunset catching the silver in his eyes. "This is your life. Your choice, about who's in it and who isn't. I meant what I said in the library. I don't intend to take that away from you, not for anything, not even for the curse."

The space between us felt smaller again, the same charged quiet from days before settling over us, and this time neither of us pulled back when his hand found mine, fingers lacing together over the mark that had started all of this.

"What happens now," I asked softly.

"Now," he said, "we make sure Wren's story doesn't repeat itself.

Elara's POVThe letter sat unopened on the table for a long moment, all of us simply staring at it like it might change shape if we looked away, and I found myself reaching for it slowly, my hands not quite steady as I finally broke the unfamiliar seal, pressed with an emblem I didn't recognize, a sun rising over waves."Read it aloud," Kael said quietly, his hand finding the small of my back, steady and grounding.I cleared my throat and began, the formal, careful language of the letter settling strange and heavy into the quiet library.*To Elara Ashwood, now Elara Draven, Queen of Nightfall Hollow. Word has reached our shores of the curse broken within your husband's bloodline, and of the manner in which it was achieved. This news, combined with certain details regarding your origins that have recently come to our attention, compels us to ask directly what we have wondered for over two decades. Are you the daughter of Marielle Sunhaven, who vanished from our kingdom before her arran

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 50

Elara's POVWe stayed in Ashwood territory for three more days, longer than I'd originally planned, though something about sitting with Alpha Cross through his slow decline felt important in a way I hadn't expected when Ryker's letter first arrived, less about him and more about giving myself the chance to close a door properly instead of leaving it hanging open the rest of my life."Do you think he'll recover," Kael asked quietly, the evening before we planned to return to Nightfall Hollow, both of us sitting on the small balcony outside the guest room the pack had prepared for us."I don't know," I admitted. "Nyra said guilt like that doesn't always resolve simply because someone finally speaks it aloud. Sometimes the body's already too worn down by the years of carrying it silently.""How do you feel about that possibility?"I considered the question honestly, turning it over before answering. "Strange. I thought I'd feel some kind of satisfaction, watching him face consequences af

Elara's POVI opened Ryker's letter in the quiet of the library, Kael reading through yet another diplomatic request beside me, and something in the careful, uneven handwriting told me before I'd even finished the first line that this wasn't simply another update on his father's cooperation with the northern packs."My father is dying. Not from illness, not from any attack, but from something the healers here can't explain, a weakness that's settled into him since the night he finally told the northern packs everything he knew. They say it looks like the wolf itself is losing its hold on him, faster than old age alone should account for. I don't know what this means, or whether it connects to anything you and Nyra might understand better than our own pack healers do, but I didn't know who else to ask.I read it twice, my stomach tightening with an unexpected complexity of feeling, because whatever cruelty Alpha Cross had shown me, whatever fear and ambition had driven decades of watc

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 48

Elara's POVWord of the curse breaking spread through Nightfall Hollow before the sun had even fully risen, servants and guards alike unable to contain their disbelief and joy once Nyra confirmed what she'd witnessed, and by midmorning, the castle had transformed into something I'd never quite seen before, genuine, unrestrained celebration replacing the careful, watchful tension that had lived in these halls for as long as I'd known them."A hundred years," Soren kept repeating throughout the morning, shaking his head like he still couldn't quite believe it himself, pulling Kael into a rough embrace that had nothing formal or careful about it at all. "A hundred years, and it took one omega from a small pack barely six months to undo what every healer and scholar in three kingdoms couldn't manage in a century.""She's not just an omega," Kael said, though there was no correction in his tone, only warmth, and pride, and something achingly soft as he looked at me across the room. "She's

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 47

Elara's POVNyra found me in the library on a bright, unremarkable afternoon, several weeks after Selene's sentencing had finally closed that long chapter of fear, and the careful, thoughtful expression on her face told me immediately that whatever she'd come to discuss carried real weight, even if the danger behind it had nothing to do with old enemies or ancient conspiracies."I want to examine the mark again," she said, settling into the chair across from mine. "Properly, now that things have quieted enough to actually study it without the pressure of an active threat clouding every observation. I've been curious for weeks whether the bond has changed since the wedding, now that the vows are fully sealed."I held out my wrist without hesitation, watching her turn it carefully in the afternoon light, tracing the familiar crescent moon and thorns with the same careful attention she'd shown that very first night in the cottage, though her expression this time carried curiosity rather

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 46

Elara's POVThe ride back to Nightfall Hollow felt entirely different from the tense journey north, the guards moving with visible relief despite the exhaustion carved into every face, Selene and her remaining followers bound and escorted at the center of our group, and though the danger that had shadowed us for weeks finally felt like it was loosening its grip, I found myself watching her carefully throughout the ride, unable to fully trust the quiet resignation she'd shown in the ruin."You keep looking back at her," Kael observed quietly, riding close beside me as the first real light of morning spread gold across the frosted fields."I keep waiting for it to feel finished," I admitted. "We caught her. She surrendered. And yet something in my chest still feels like it's bracing for one more thing to go wrong.""That's fair," he said. "We've been bracing for months. It doesn't simply stop because the danger has passed. Give it time, Elara. I imagine it'll take both of us a while to
