KENDRICK'S POV. I scanned the file Knox had just brought into my study, a frown settling on my face. The whole situation was beginning to seem far worse than I had imagined. Wolfless at the age of Twenty-two? "No." I dropped the file onto my desk, shaking my head. "This can't work." Knox sighed in exhaustion. "Kendrick..." "What?" I snapped. He pinned his gaze on me for a few seconds, then answered. "The goddess knows best." "Oh, does she?" I queried. "The girl is a wolfless omega. Who is to say her genes aren't recessive?" "Actually, from everything this file says, she already established a connection with her wolf since she turned sixteen. She just hasn't shifted yet." I looked at him with slight irritation. "Does that even make sense to you?" He shrugged. "If you're a werewolf-demon hybrid, then anything is possible. We don't make the rules, the Moon Goddess does." "This is a curse, not strength." The words tasted bitter. "I’m not a hybrid. I’m a cursed King," I pointed out. "And surely, the goddess wants me destroyed. That girl cannot anchor me." "What if she can?" he countered. I shut my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm my thoughts. Only I knew the pains that plagued me during those rut nights when my demon surged forth and completely took control. I released a low sigh when I remembered that yet another rut night was approaching. "So, what now?" Knox asked. "You just want to leave her at Night Fang pack and pretend she never existed?" I let his question sit in my mind for a brief moment, before answering. "I would reject her." "No, you can't." "Yes, I can," I said, enunciating each word. "And I will," I finished in a tone of finality. "You will be endangering yourself!" his voice rose. I shot him a hard glare and he looked away in mild annoyance. My frustration increased and I could feel my demon stir restlessly within me. It was time to stop discussing this aggravating topic. I pushed to my feet and headed for the door. "Where are you going?" Knox called out behind me. "I'm done talking." "Seriously?" "See you at lunch, Knox." I opened the door and made my way out. ******************* LATER THAT NIGHT. I walked into my quarters and started stripping off my clothes the moment the chamber doors closed behind me. I felt hot. Very hot. It was unusual, especially since my demon rut wasn't supposed to start for another couple of days. Sweat broke out across my forehead as I let out a low grunt and shoved the bathroom door open. My breathing grew heavier, and the heat inside me only got worse. I felt the familiar surge of energy race through my veins as my senses sharpened. The bathroom walls suddenly seemed to close in around me, while everything else became unnaturally sharp. Cursed furs... This wasn’t supposed to happen now. "Fuck," I rasped, quickly climbing into the bath that had already been prepared for me. "Nngh…" A helpless growl escaped through my clenched teeth the moment the warm water touched my skin. The heat inside me only grew worse. My Demon, Varyx, stirred beneath my skin, and I fought to suppress another growl, struggling to stay in control. But when had I ever won a fight against Varyx? "Nooo..." I gritted out, panting hard. "Not now, Varyx!" I jumped out of the bath and rushed into my bedchamber. I had to ensure the High Priestess came before things spiraled out of control. Nobody should die by my hand. Not again… I opened my mindlink and tried to connect with Knox. 'Knox...' I panted. 'Knox... I'm... Get Nadiaaa...' Another wave of heat crashed through me before I could finish. 'Kendrick?!', his agitated voice filtered through. 'Are you okay?' I was gradually losing sense of my surroundings, a clear sign that Varyx was already emerging. 'Call the priestess...' I muttered weakly as I fell to the floor, 'Call Nadia'. I felt my connection to our mindlink slowly fade, hoping that none of the Deltas guarding my chamber would rush in to check on me. If they did, they wouldn’t make it out alive. I wasn’t sure how much time had passed before I sensed another presence in the room. At first, everything was hazy. Then, the High priestess’s voice gradually became clearer. She was chanting. "Nondum tempus tuum est." ‘It is not yet your time’. "Humi permane." ‘Stay grounded’. Varyx let out a low growl before retreating once more beneath my skin. Moments later, I felt something cold against my forehead. When I opened my eyes, I realized Nadia had her index and middle fingers pressed against my forehead. I sucked in a sharp breath and scrunched my nose as every scent in the room hit me all at once. "Your Majesty!" Nadia called over me, but my ears rang like she had screamed. I swallowed, letting my vision settle on her face, then on Knox. "Are you with us?" she asked again and I nodded weakly, feeling quite drained. "What the hell just happened?" I asked. "Varyx… It’s not his time." "First of all…" She rose to her feet and quickly looked away. "You should cover yourself, Your Majesty." She and Knox both tried to hide their laughter as I realized I had been naked the entire time. Before I could move, Knox grabbed the fur blanket from my bed and threw it over me. "Thank you," I muttered. I got to my feet and wrapped the blanket securely around my waist before turning to Nadia. "That wasn’t funny," I said, emotionless. She let out a low sigh and looked down. "I apologize, Your Majesty." The side of my lips lifted in a small frown. "Are we talking about the same thing?" She exchanged a confused look with Knox before looking back at me. "Aren’t we?" I shot her one last look before walking over to my wardrobe and pulling out a pair of pants. Not caring she was still there, I let the blanket around my waist fall to the floor, before slipping on my pants. She visibly gulped. Quite silly of her to think I gave a fuck who saw me naked. "You really had to traumatize her even more, didn’t you?" Knox muttered with a sigh. "She didn’t exactly look traumatized the first time," I shot back before turning to Nadia. "What just happened with Varyx wasn’t funny," I clarified. Silence fell as I held her gaze. "What the fuck is happening?" She looked at me as though I already knew the answer. "Varyx has already sensed his mate," she said quietly. "He’ll keep fighting for control until you return to Night Fang and claim her." Silence filled the room. "You must be joking," I snapped. "I wish I was," she said. "Bring Lyra Blackthorne to the White Citadel as soon as you can, because whether you choose to accept her or not… both your Wolf and Demon already have." "This is insane," I spat grimly. "You need her close," Nadia insisted. "Ignore the bond, and Varyx will only grow more restless. The next time he takes control…" She paused. "I may not be able to stop him."LYRA."I'm going to fuck you, Lyra."My heart hammered so hard against my chest, it hurt. Under a different circumstance, that would have been such a pleasant thing to hear him say to me, considering how much my very existence repulsed him. But right then, it wasn't. He wasn't himself. After princess Nuria had falsely accused me the previous evening, I left Alpha Ronan's chambers and returned to the servant's quarters, only to meet a bit of chaos.Dalia had explained to me what was happening and I was shocked. I didn't know that those rumours I usually thought 'baseless' were indeed true. Alpha Ronan was suffering from an age-long curse and was plagued by a bloodthirsty demon side. She informed me that everyone was to steer clear of his quarters for the time being. So I stayed back at the servants quarters the entire day, today, until a random maid approached me a while ago with a jar of herbs, claiming Katya had demanded I took it to Alpha Ronan's chambers. I was unsure, but she a
RONAN.Those damned tears again."Th.. that's not true," she whispered. This time, her eyes didn't carry the usual fear I used to see. Instead, she looked offended.Somehow, I knew within myself that she was telling the truth. But the tension in the room was already too much and I wanted her gone."Just leave," I said with a wave of my hand. But she remained in her spot, looking confused."Why are you still here?!" Nuria suddenly lashed out, making my jaw tighten. I realized right then that I had a problem far bigger than I had imagined. Nuria's outburst had clearly offended me.I was unconsciously becoming possessive of that omega, and that was bad for me. Too bad."Get out!" I snapped before I could hold back, inwardly irritated at how easily I was letting the mate bond control me.She flinched and looked up at me, her eyes darkening in subtle disappointment. She was angry at me.It wasn't the daring or obvious kind of anger, but I could feel it nonetheless. My mouth suddenly tast
LYRA.It was a new day and I was very tensed about resuming my duties at Alpha Ronan's chambers, considering how I had cut him short and literally fled from his chambers the previous day.Nonetheless, I found myself walking to the royal quarters minutes before the gong for the next hour rang.On my way there, I subconsciously fondled the necklace around my neck, deeply missing the person who had given it to me.Madame Jocasta. On the day I left Lord Bailey's residence, I thought she had decided to not bade me farewell, and it hurt so bad. But then, she suddenly appeared just before I left, crying so badly and hugging me tightly. I had never seen her so... raw and vulnerable before. She was always so composed. The next thing I knew, she squeezed something into my palm and whispered in my ear to wear it at all times, that she was always close to my heart. She was about saying something more when Lord Bailey suddenly grabbed her and pulled her away with him.On getting to the waiting
LYRA.After breakfast, I returned to the kitchen with the other maids, still in disbelief at how the situation at the dinning hall had escalated. One minute I was scared to have drawn prince Kian's attention, and the next minute I was made Alpha Ronan's personal maid.Oh goddess, I was so happy deep down. This new role of mine meant that I would have an excuse to be around my mate."Congratulations, Lyra," one of the maids said. "Thank you..?" I replied, unsure why exactly I was being celebrated. "Congratulations, Lyra!!" The others joined in.I was still confused until Katya appeared. "I see who's the king's new attendant now," she teased. "Congratulations my dear."Wait... was that why they were congratulating me? Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought it was such a big deal. "Thank you, Katya," I muttered in response, giving a small bow."I wish I was in your shoes, Lyra?" one of the maids said."Same here!" Another maid agreed. "I could really make do with that much inc
RONAN.Shortly after my personal maid, Luna had informed us that it was time for breakfast, Nuria and I made our way out. She walked ahead of me and from the stiffness in her shoulders, I could tell she was still displeased. I didn't blame her though, I was displeased as well. I had her so close this past week but annoyingly, we couldn't do more than kiss.Every single night since that omega showed up in my life, I hadn't gotten a single release. And even when I tried to help myself in the bathtub, she still appeared and ruined it.Nuria didn't understand because I was yet to tell her I had found my mate. So every night, it seemed like I was just giving one fake excuse after the other.A few minutes later, we got to the hall to see almost everyone present. My eyes leisurely swept across the hall, until they fell on the origin of the temporary problem I had. Yes, temporary. Because I was definitely going to find a way around having my release soon. Either grow the balls to reject h
A WEEK LATER.LYRA.It was my second week in the White Citadel and I was slowly getting accustomed to my new life. The previous week had come with unexpected situations which led to me being marked by people I would have preferred to stay unnoticed by. Somehow, I came to the realization that princess Nuria may not have been as... kind as I had thought. She had randomly appeared at the servants' quarters a day after my ugly encounter with the dowager, asking if I was okay and advising me to stay far away from Alpha Ronan for my own safety.I would have genuinely mistaken it as a show of care, but the look of disdain in her eyes had forced me to see things for what they were. She was subtly marking her territory. And funny how that territory was actually supposed to be mine."Lyra!"I looked ahead to see Katya walking down from the other end of the hallway."Good morning, Katya," I greeted as soon as she got to me."Good morning, Lyra, it's a new daayyy.""Yes," I muttered flatly. "
PROLOGUE. RONAN. By the time I reached the territorial boundary, two decapitated heads of my sentinels lay on the blood-soaked ground. Fury ignited in my veins like wildfire. Who the hell had dared step foot into my territory? "Alpha..." A strained voice called out. I turned to see Ramsey, one
A WEEK LATER.LYRA.It was one week since I had found my mate. He hadn't returned for me since then, and my heartache only grew worse each passing day.I sat on a rock close to the lake, as I watched Elektra's wolf do another lap around the water. This was our usual routine. Her wolf ran, while I j
LYRA.I clutched my burning cheek, the tears in my eyes finally spilling over. I waited patiently for the pain to dull, but it throbbed even more as each second passed. Warm liquid slid down my jaw, but it felt too thick to be tears. I looked up just in time to catch Aurelia mid-shift. That only m
LYRA.There was thick silence within the hall, and I noticed some of nobles sharing tense glances amongst themselves. After so many years, the Alpha king had finally found his mate. And it turned out to be... me?Alpha Ronan shifted his gaze to the guards who were still holding my arms, and the
