Evelyn

Adrian stood frozen in the doorway for only a second before his voice tore through the room.

“What the hell is going on here?”

I flinched so hard the movement pulled at the fresh stitches across my abdomen. Damien’s arms loosened around me immediately, but he did not pull away completely. He stayed seated on the edge of the bed, one hand still resting lightly near my shoulder, as if he were ready to steady me if I needed it.

Adrian’s eyes locked on that hand. His jaw tightened until the muscle jumped.

“Get the fuck away from my wife,” he said, each word sharp and low.

Damien rose slowly, calm as ever, and turned to face him.

“Mr. Parker, your wife just came out of major surgery. She needed support. That is all this is.”

“Support?” Adrian stepped further into the room, letting the door swing shut behind him. “You were holding her like she belongs to you. I walked in and found another man with his hands all over my wife while she was lying in a hospital bed. Don’t stand there and tell me that is support.”

I tried to sit up a little, but pain shot through my side and forced a soft gasp out of me. Both men looked at me at once.

“Adrian, please,” I whispered. “It is not what you think.”

He did not even glance at me properly. His attention stayed fixed on Damien.

“I asked you to leave. Now.”

Damien kept his voice even.

“I am her attending physician. I am not leaving until I am certain she is stable and comfortable.”

“You are not her anything,” Adrian shot back. “I do not care what title the hospital gave you. You were holding my wife. That ends now.”

The air in the room felt thick.

“Adrian,” I said again, stronger this time even though my throat still felt raw. “Lower your voice. I cannot handle any more anger right now. Please. Just lower your voice.”

He finally looked at me then. For a moment, something flickered across his face, something that almost looked like regret, but it disappeared just as fast.

“You want me to lower my voice while this man sits here acting like he has every right to touch you?” He gave a short, humourless laugh. “Funny hearing this coming from you.”

Damien spoke before I could answer.

“She has been through more than most people could carry. I offered comfort. Nothing more.”

“Comfort,” Adrian repeated, tasting the word like it was poison. “Interesting how your version of comfort looks a lot like crossing every line that exists between a doctor and a patient.”

I felt hot tears building again.

“Stop it. Both of you. I cannot do this. Not today.”

Adrian’s eyes cut back to me.

“Then tell him to leave.”

The words hung there. He was forcing me to choose in front of both of them while I was still bandaged and weak and barely able to sit up without pain. He didn't even bother to ask me about my health or what happened to me.

I took a deep breath and swallowed hard.

“Damien has been nothing but kind to me. If he wasn't here, I don't know what would have happened to me. So, please, just stop yelling, Adrian. My head is already spinning.”

Adrian stared at me for a long second, then shook his head like he could not believe what he was hearing.

“Unbelievable. You are actually defending him.”

“I am asking you to stop yelling,” I said, my voice cracking. “That is all.”

He looked at Damien one last time.

“Stay the hell away from my wife outside of whatever medical duty you think you have. I will be speaking to the hospital about this.”

Then he turned and walked out. The door closed harder than it needed to.

The silence that followed felt heavier than the argument itself.

Damien sat back down on the chair beside the bed. He did not try to touch me again. He simply stayed there, quiet, while the tears I had been holding finally spilled over.

“I am sorry,” I whispered. “He should not have spoken to you like that.”

“You do not need to apologise for him,” Damien said gently. “You need to rest.”

I shook my head. The movement made the room tilt a little.

“Everything is just falling apart in my marriage. He didn't even bother to stay with me while I miscarried. He said terrible things about my body, and now he walks in and acts like I am the one who did something wrong just because you were comforting me.”

Damien stayed quiet for a while, letting me talk. When my breathing finally slowed, he reached for the water cup on the side table and held it so I could drink without straining.

“You always used to do that,” he said softly after a moment. “When we were kids. You would get quiet when something hurt too much, and then later the words would come out all at once.”

I looked at him.

“You still remember that?”

“I remember a lot of things about you, Evelyn. The way you used to climb the old oak tree behind your parents’ house even though your mother told you not to. The way you would argue with anyone who said girls could not run as fast as boys. You were never afraid to speak up.”

A small, tired smile pulled at my mouth.

“That girl feels like someone else now.”

“She is still in there,” he said. “She just needs time to breathe again.”

The nurses came in and out throughout the rest of the day. Damien handled every question, adjusted my pain medication when the ache in my side grew sharper, and made sure the room stayed quiet. Whenever I woke from sleep, he was always here, either reviewing my chart or simply sitting in the chair with the soft light of the monitor screen on his face.

We talked about small things from the past. Nothing heavy. Just pieces of the people we used to be. For the first time in a long time, I did not feel like I had to explain my pain or justify why I was still broken. He already seemed to understand.

Somewhere near dawn, I finally drifted into a deeper sleep.

When I opened my eyes again, morning light was slipping through the blinds. Damien was gone, but a nurse was checking my IV. A few minutes later, the door opened, and Kendall walked in, her face tight with worry.

She came straight to the bed and took my hand, her fingers wrapping tightly around mine.

“Glad you're finally awake. I had to rush out yesterday to handle some work related issues. How are you feeling?”

“Sore. Tired.” I managed a small smile. “Better than yesterday, I think.”

Kendall let out a quiet breath, the tension in her shoulders easing just a little.

“Thank God,” she murmured. “I was so worried about you.”

But the relief on her face lasted only a moment before it quickly gave way to an unease that settled over her face.

I frowned. “Kendall... what is it?”

She hesitated, glancing away for a brief moment before looking back at me.

“I wasn't sure if I should tell you while you're still recovering.”

My stomach tightened. “Just tell me.”

She sighed softly.

“A friend of mine works here at the hospital. She called me this morning after hearing what happened yesterday.”

My fingers curled tighter around the blanket. Kendall met my eyes.

“Apparently, Adrian has already contacted the hospital administration.”

“He's trying to have Damien removed as your doctor.”

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    The Other Patient

EvelynKendall called me while I was still sitting in the hospital bed, the fever finally lower but the deep ache in my side refusing to ease. Her voice carried the tight urgency she only used when she had found something she could not keep to herself. After a few pleasantries and wondering about my health as it was currently, Kendall jumped right into it. “I kept digging after the news article about Laura Hensley,” she said. “She contacted at least two other former patients from the same clinic before she disappeared. One of them is willing to talk, but only to you, and only if you come alone. No one else. She is scared, Evie. Really scared.”I pressed my free hand against the bandages and stared at the pale wall opposite the bed. At this point, everything circled in my head until the new information settled on top like another layer of weight. “When?”“This afternoon. She gave me a location outside the city. A quiet park near the old reservoir. She will be there at three. If you ar

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    What Damien Saw

AdrianI left a few minutes after the nurse had left to attend to a business call.By the time I returned, I paused dead in my tracks just as I was about to enter the ward and leant in to get just a peek of what was going on between the two of them.Evelyn still looked pale and drained from the fever, one hand resting weakly against the bandages under her gown, but her eyes were fixed on Damien with a sharpness that had not been there earlier. He stood at the foot of the bed with the closed chart still in his hands, his posture carefully neutral, the same way he always managed to look when he wanted to appear professional and nothing more. The fool!“What did you see in that file?” Evelyn asked him.Her voice was low, but it carried the kind of quiet demand that made it clear she would not accept another deflection. What was going on?I leant in closer, curious.Damien set the chart down on the counter behind him and turned fully toward her.“Nothing that changes your current treatmen

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    The Altered Record

EvelynThe fever climbed higher during the night, and by morning it had settled deep into my bones, turning every movement into a slow, grinding effort.Of course, in a bid to avoid further problems with my husband, Damien had only taken me to a place he could trust. That didn’t necessarily mean that their treatment was successful. As a matter of fact, I had taken all the medications recommended, and though it had subsided indeed, it was only for a while before the pain returned in double folds. My side throbbed with a heat that felt separate from the rest of my body, and when I tried to sit up, the room tilted so hard I had to grip the mattress with both hands.I called out once, then again, louder. No one answered.I forced myself out of bed and made it as far as the hallway before my legs threatened to give. The house was quiet in the way that meant Adrian had already left for the office, and for some reason, I had every reason to be afraid. At first, I thought I was alone, but I r

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Fractures at Home

AdrianI walked through the front door later than usual and found my mother already waiting in the living room, her expression tight with the kind of controlled disapproval she reserved for situations she considered beneath the family name.Doris stood a few steps behind her, folder still in hand from whatever work matter had brought her by earlier. The house felt colder than it should have. But that too, was a sensation I was getting used to.“She left with that doctor again,” Margaret said the moment I set my keys down. “She claimed to have some extreme fever. What effortery. Soon, Evelyn, your wife may just run out of excuses to justify how less of a wife she has become.”The words landed harder than I expected.I had given Evelyn a clear boundary after the debt payment. Damien Cross was to stay out of our lives. Yet here she was, still running to him the moment things became difficult. Or just when she had the slightest chance.Something sharp and familiar twisted in my chest.“Wh

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    The Weight of Silence

EvelynI guess shortly after Kendall revealed this new discovery, I couldn’t help but feel that I was in no way safe.Something must have happened to Laura Hensley.Kendall figured out how worried I was by this new discovery and immediately regretted telling me. Not like she had a choice.I convinced her I was doing great and that we both just had to keep our eyes peeled and try to get some sleep. But the worry was already bringing on a fever. The fever came on slowly at first, a low heat that settled behind my eyes.By mid-morning, I could barely sit up without the room tilting. I had taken the pain medication twice already, yet the grinding discomfort beneath the bandages refused to ease.Adrian moved through the house with the same icy civility he had worn since the debt revelation. When I asked if we could talk about anything at all, he simply looked at me for a long moment and then returned to his laptop without answering. The silence between us had become a living thing, cold an

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Missing

EvelynI barely slept after the incomplete message arrived. The three words “You have to…” sat in my mind like an unfinished sentence that refused to leave, and the deep ache in my side made every turn in the bed feel like a fresh reminder that my body was still far from healed. By morning, the physical pain had settled into a steady, grinding presence, and the fear from the night before had only grown sharper.Kendall arrived early, her expression already set. We drove to the police station together in near silence and waited to see an officer. When our turn finally came, we were led to a tired-looking officer who listened with the polite patience of someone who had already decided the story was not worth much of his time. I had barely finished before I knew it was all a waste.“So a woman you never met in person called you about some medical records, set a meeting, and never showed up,” he said, tapping his pen against the desk. “And then she sent a partial text in the middle of the
