Xira’s POV

“Or are you just hoping it’s true because it makes it easier for you to justify your growing attachment to her?” I asked, watching as Derek ground his teeth against each other while looking straight ahead. “Tell me, have you even asked her directly how she feels about Kael? Or are you too afraid of the answer?”

He pressed his lips into a thin line, his nostrils flaring, but he didn’t reply, and it didn’t get to me because his silence was actually louder than any confession could have been.

I straightened, satisfaction spreading in my chest like an infection. I was done making my point, and regardless of what Derek said to defend himself, would not erase the truth that was staring right back at his face.

He was losing focus. Fiona was becoming more than just a pawn to him, and he needed someone like me to remind him of his priorities before he did something utterly stupid, like actually falling in love with her and throwing his entire life work away.
