“Are you sure she would be there?” I asked my brother, anxiety thrummed through me making my nerves feel like live wires. I had never felt like this, ever….not even on the day I killed my father. “Have my visions ever led us wrong?” Kian, my twin brother said, his milky colored unfeeling eyes turning to look at mine with an accuracy that never got less startling…..or frightening. My twin brother was one of those people called, ‘touched by the moon goddess’. He came out of the womb five minutes behind me, eyes milky with no hint of pupils. A sure sign of the moon goddess's seers, her prophets. It was weird because her prophets are usually females but no one could argue the fact that the moon goddess had called my brother. It had painted him as a target, people saw him as weak especially when my father died. They tried to use him against me to take over the biggest pack in America, and just maybe the world, but he came back with the heads of his enemies every time. An alpha in his own right. And now the two of us led the pack side by side, he was the only person who didn't pose a dominance issue to my wolf as others had thought would happen when it came to the time to pick the next alpha. We destroyed the other contenders and refused to fight with each other. Like a two-headed hydra, we were better and stronger by each other's sides. We shared everything, and as the goddess would have it, including our mate. “I can think of one particular time your vision had led me wrong,” I grumbled good-naturedly. He rolled his unfeeling eyes, “That one was on purpose, you were annoying me with your constant henning. I had to teach you a lesson.” And it was a lesson well learnt, I tended to worry over my brother. Not too much that I saw him as a liability but just enough to get on his toes. My vengeful brother gave me a vision that led me on a wild goose chase for months and then straight into an ambush that led to some inches of my precious hair being cut. Someone had been aiming for my jugular. He had cackled like a madman when I came home. Then went after the people behind the ambush by himself. A part of me thought the goddess took his sense of self-preservation and sanity along with his sight. My brother smirked at me knowingly, the bastard probably knew what I was thinking of. He stood up and stretched languidly like a feline, “as long as you stick to time, you would be able to swoop in and save her like the Knight in shining armor you have been dying to be.” I watched as he snapped his walking cane open and started his journey to the door. He didn’t even need a walking cane but he liked to be underestimated, which makes it more fun for him, I guess. “If I'm the Knight in shining armor, what does that make you?” I called out. “His more gorgeous and devilishly charming brother.” He threw back over his shoulder with a mischievous grin just before the door slammed shut. Selena's POV Instinct took over as I dashed through the back door outside into the night's chill. I usually loved the fact that Ellen’s house was isolated from everyone but now it had come back to bite me in the ass. Oh God, Ellen…. I fought the growing nausea at the back of my throat, my skin clammy and moist. There was no time to go into shock now, I had to survive first. Gravel crunched under my fluffy bunny slippers as I pushed myself even harder, my lungs started their protests which I paid no attention to. I could have easily shifted into my wolf but my body still hurt from the pain I had felt earlier on and to shift now while my body was sore would put me at a greater disadvantage. If I could just get to the car… The winds seemed to change with me, urging me on, as I changed directions to the front of the house where the car was parked. Chills racked through my body as I ran, the cold biting my skin through the thin white nightgown I wore. The nightgown Ellen bought for me. I bit back a sob as I ran past the garden I was weeding earlier that day. The air on my hand standing was the only warning I got before the car in front of me exploded, the force of the blast throwing me to the ground. Pain slammed into me as I landed wrong on my wrist. I winced, lying there as my body protested even the rising and falling movements of my chest. The flames from the burning car cast an eerie orange light on the masked figure, cloaked in black, that was steadily making his way to me. I hoped someone would see the flames and come running but I knew it would be too late if I didn't get moving now. Adrenaline masked most of my pain as I stumbled to my feet. I had only taken a few steps when a gloved hand caught my hair and yanked it so far back, I thought my head would be separate from my neck. A terrified scream burst out from me. “Why are you doing this?!” I shrieked, struggling with all I had left, I would not make this easy for him, I wouldn't. His hoarse voice answered, “By the order of the Luna, Die.” A glint of steel was all I saw and I turned my body instinctively, driving the dagger into my shoulder instead of my chest like he had planned. A scream tore out from me, the pain giving me the strength to shift my hand into claws and rake through his chest. He let go of my hair with a loud bellow and I wasted no time in running into the forest, clutching my shoulder as I ran. Footsteps sounded behind me. I made the error of looking back and I slammed into a wall, a solid warm wall. My shoulder jostled with the movement and I cried out, black spots staining my vision. Warm hands wrapped around me. “Help me,” I whispered faintly. The last thing I saw before the darkness overtook my vision was a pair of violet eyes. Distantly, I heard a roar then I knew nothing. The quiet that fell over the gardens after the messenger arrived felt different from the silence of the coronation. This one felt uncertain. Many guests stood under the sky while the royal guards kept the breathless messenger at a distance and everyone looked at him and the Twin Alphas like they knew whatever came next would change the evening.Kai stepped first. His voice was calm despite the tension."You've interrupted a ceremony."The messenger immediately bowed his head."My Alpha… forgive me."He was still breathing hard. Dust stuck to his clothes as he had ridden without stopping for days."I would never have come if it wasn't urgent."Kian exchanged a glance with Kai before speaking."What happened?"The messenger swallowed hard. His eyes flicked to the gathered rulers before returning to the platform."It concerns Serena."The name alone caused whispers through the crowd. Some frowned.Others exchanged glances. For me…It felt far away. Not because I had forgotten her.Becaus
Selena’s POVThe first chant echoed across the grounds like thunder in the distance, low and steady and every conversation around me stopped as if the whole world had remembered something important. The old leaders standing in the silver circle lifted their carved sticks towards the sky while the moonstones on the platform started to glow one by one. Their voices mixed together saying words in a language I did not know yet somehow my heart understood every word.“By the light that controls the night…”“By the blood that keeps the packs together…”“By the Moon Goddess who chooses her own…”The words wrapped around me like strings that I could not see.A cold wind blew across my skin.My heart beat slowed. Then without warning something hot exploded in my chest.I gasped for air.Pain shot through every part of my body.My knees almost gave way. Before I could fall, Kai's hand closed around mine and Kian stood beside me putting his hand on my back.“You are not alone " Kai whispered, hi
Selena’s POVA month went by fast. Even though I learned something new about Elara and Lyra every day our estate started to feel like home. The babies would. We would get used to it and we would laugh a lot in rooms that used to be quiet. This morning was different though. The estate did not feel normal at all.I saw the servants walking around the garden with roses and moon lilies and musicians were getting ready to play under fancy canopies. Guests were arriving in carriages. I could see the flags with the symbols of our friends' groups waving in the wind.I was standing in front of the mirror in my bedroom holding Lyra and Elara was sleeping in Tina's arms. I just stood there looking at us in the mirror thinking about my life.Tina said, "You have been staring at yourself for a time." She was. Moving her arms gently to keep Elara asleep. "Are you trying to remember who you are?"I laughed a little."No " I said."Then what are you thinking about?"My hands were touching my dress, w
Selena’s POVThe room was really quiet after our daughters fell asleep and even though everyone was still smiling about their arrival things started to feel calmer. It felt like a weight had been lifted off our shoulders. Not because something bad had stopped,. Because something amazing had finally happened after a long wait.I looked at our girls. They already seemed different to me. One of them was frowning in her sleep like she was thinking hard about something and the other one was sleeping really peacefully with her tiny fingers still holding onto Kians hand.I smiled. "They are already becoming themselves " I said.Kian looked at them. Then nodded softly. "They always were " he said. His answer made me feel a little emotional. For months we had been thinking about our daughters. Wondering what they would be like. Now that they were here it was more amazing than we had imagined.Kai leaned over the bassinet. Cleared his throat quietly. "So..." he started to say. He was grinning.
Selena’s POVThe first cry changed everything. It was loud and strong. It filled the whole delivery room. All the other sounds that had been going on for hours just stopped. I started breathing slowly and unevenly and tears came to my eyes before I even knew they were there.Someone laughed quietly.Someone else sniffed. The room got really quiet. It felt special like something important was happening. The doctor said "Congratulations, your daughter" with a warm smile. She was tired. She was still smiling.Daughter.That word meant a lot to me.It was not a baby it was a daughter. The nurse put the baby against my chest and everything else just disappeared.I said "Oh...". That was it.The baby was warm really warm. Her little body was moving up and down as she breathed. One of her tiny hands was on my skin.I just stared at her.I looked at her nose, her tiny head, and the little line between her eyebrows that made her look serious. My daughter. My fingers were shaking as I touched h
Kai’s POVPregnancy did not arrive in my life one day.It crept into my home quietly becoming a part of mornings. Then one day I realized every part of our house was getting ready for someone it had never met.The changes just happened. No one told me about them. They simply... Started. One morning Mrs. Harlow frowned because I tried to pick up a basket of apples.“Oh, no way.”I was surprised.“What’s wrong?”“That’s too heavy for you.”I looked at the basket. Then back, at her. "It’s apples.”“It’s a basket of apples.”“It doesn’t weigh as much as Kai’s pride.”One of the gardeners nearby chuckled.Mrs. Harlow crossed her arms. She was calm like she already knew she was right.“It’s still not happening.”Before I could say anything Kian appeared and took the basket. He just kept walking as he had always planned to.“I wasn’t carrying that " he said calmly.“You just took it from me.”“I helped you.”“It was apples.”“It was something that needed to be done.”“You’re being really ann
Selena’s POVKai clasped hos hands tightly around the glass but stayed quiet, taking slow sips of the water instead.“I’ve never been wanted by my own pack. I was deemed the useless one because I’m fat and now, even my mate chose my sister over me.”The sound of glass shattering against a wall fill
Selena’s POVIt’s been a few hours since I woke up and the room was still empty.Slowly, I pulled the covers off my body and swung my legs over the edge of the bed, placing my palms on the bed and glancing around the room. It was eerily quiet and for some reason, that made me unsettled.I sigh and
Selena's POV Turn around little mouse…I squeezed my eyes shut and slowly, I did. Kai stood in the doorway behind me, hands clasped behind his back, looking calm like he had been waiting there the whole time but his anger was written in the stillness of his body. His muscles were tensed and he was
Selena’s POVI chugged down the entire glass of water and wiped under my lip with a napkin, avoiding Kai’s curious eyes.He slowly lifted the spoon to his mouth, watching me intently as he ate. A strange maid brought a bottle of wine and dropped it on the table before nodding at him and scurrying o
