LOGINKai's POV
Kian sauntered in looking like the cat that got the canary. I leaned back and watched him sit on a leather chair grinning, I waited for the usual sardonic response and he did not disappoint. “So, how did it feel to play Knight in shining armour for once?” His tone held mockery and his eyes, amusement. “It was weird, I'm usually the villain,” I replied after a moment of thought. “With where you're keeping her, I'd say you fully qualify for the villain role.” His tone was light and mild, hiding the intensity that he was well known for. My brother was the charmer, hiding his darkness from anyone he came across, my darkness was plain to see. My eyes were unreadable as I gazed at him, “If you want to release her, be my fucking guest but if she runs, that's on you.” He laughed and annoyance twinged inside me, “Relax, I'm not asking you to release her.” He tilted his head to the side, “We kept our mate in a cage, do you think there's something wrong with us?” We both looked at each other for a moment, then simultaneously, “Nah.” Sarcasm dripping from our tones. “After 19 years, we'll finally have the truth on why our mother was killed.” Something akin to relief crossed my twin's face. Everyone had their demons, this one was ours. 19 years ago, when we were six, our mother was killed right in front of us with us hiding in the closet. Sometimes I could still hear her screams. We had gotten a view of one of the men's faces and a crest, a three-headed wolf snarling, on his chest. Then fate had handed us his daughter sitting pretty in our prison and because the goddess had a good sense of humour, she was our mate. “What if she doesn't have the answer we're looking for?” I played devil's advocate. “What daughter doesn't know about her father's dealings? And if she truly doesn't, we can send her back to her pack to scout for information, either way she's the key to us getting what we want.” “And in the meantime…” I grinned darkly, seeing the same darkness reflected in my brother's eyes. “We get to play with her, revenge is a dish best cold and if she breaks in the process, well….that would be a shame, wouldn't it?” His smile was shark-like, nothing was going to get in our way, not even some pesky airhead that the moon goddess gave to us as a mate. Selena's POV My senses gradually returned to me as I could bring my body into consciousness. I was lying on something hard in somewhere that smelled metallic, like iron. No, not iron….blood. My vision was blurry when I opened my eyes and my body ached but it was the kind of ache that came with sleeping on the floor. My shoulder throbbed as I looked around wondering how I got here. I was in what looked like a cell, caged in by metallic bars and I could hear the sound of groans coming from the cells around me. The air was damp and humid, and now that I was more conscious, I could smell other things apart from the blood and none of them were pleasant. Guards with stern ugly faces were placed at every corner, each looking even more fearsome than the last. I scratched my neck in confusion, how did I get here? Tracing my memories to the moments before I woke up here was harder than it should have been. My body was exhausted and my mind felt fuzzy. I was running away from something… no, someone. An assassin from my old pack. He had killed Ellen. Oh God, Ellen…. A sob ripped out of my throat but I clamped my hand over my mouth to stifle it. Grief slammed into me, overwhelming me until it felt like I couldn't breathe. She died because of me, because she had let me in and protected me. My fault…My fault…All my fault. An agonised scream burst out of me, the guilt and the pain crushed me under their weight as I lay on the floor sobbing for the only mother I had ever known. I was alone in the world and rightfully so, I just wondered how much more I could take before I broke beyond repair if I hadn't already. The back of my neck prickled with awareness even before He spoke, “Well, this is such a pitying sight.” His tone held cruel mockery but it still sounded pleasant in my ears, deep and husky. Two scents hit me at once, the first one was of lightning, an electric storm destroying everything in its path, while the second one was of the ocean, I could almost hear the tides bashing against rocks as I inhaled the scents greedily. Roland has smelt of coffee and peppermint, it was nothing as powerful and oppressive as the two scents in the room. Shame hit me at that realisation that I had been distracted from my thoughts of Ellen by scents and anger washed over me not a minute later at the two people intruding on my grief. All the heat was swept out of me and replaced with a different kind when I saw them. It was like having double vision, the differences only coming after I had stared at them long enough. They looked like the gods of old with their thick black hair, aquiline noses, high cheekbones, and jaws sharp enough to cut glass. The heat turned into a burning inferno that started at my core and spread through my body leaving me panting like a dog in heat. They were all the things I wanted but I knew I shouldn't want. My wolf rose with a low eager whine. My mouth watered at the sight of their thick bulging biceps and their impressive stature, they could crush me and I'd die happily. The only difference in the two gorgeous men before me was their eyes, the first one, who smelled like lightning had milky eyes. ‘Moon touched’ they called his kind, people were usually afraid of them but they were almost always hidden in the goddess's temple. But this one was out here and clearly an alpha, that had never been heard of. The second had glowing violet eyes. Violet eyes….he was the one that I saw in the forest! “Think she is done eye-humping us now?” Milky eyes muttered to his brother, my face flushed and I tore my gaze away with great difficulty. The dominance radiating off them was oppressive, leaving my wolf cowering in submission even as she yipped happily. That should have been my first clue. The air was charged with a tension that was so tangible, I could almost see it. I opened my mouth to ask who they were but what came out instead stunned me, “Mates.” My voice was thin and reedy but the word was clearly heard. I closed my eyes in agony, goddess, haven't I had enough? The quiet that fell over the gardens after the messenger arrived felt different from the silence of the coronation. This one felt uncertain. Many guests stood under the sky while the royal guards kept the breathless messenger at a distance and everyone looked at him and the Twin Alphas like they knew whatever came next would change the evening.Kai stepped first. His voice was calm despite the tension."You've interrupted a ceremony."The messenger immediately bowed his head."My Alpha… forgive me."He was still breathing hard. Dust stuck to his clothes as he had ridden without stopping for days."I would never have come if it wasn't urgent."Kian exchanged a glance with Kai before speaking."What happened?"The messenger swallowed hard. His eyes flicked to the gathered rulers before returning to the platform."It concerns Serena."The name alone caused whispers through the crowd. Some frowned.Others exchanged glances. For me…It felt far away. Not because I had forgotten her.Becaus
Selena’s POVThe first chant echoed across the grounds like thunder in the distance, low and steady and every conversation around me stopped as if the whole world had remembered something important. The old leaders standing in the silver circle lifted their carved sticks towards the sky while the moonstones on the platform started to glow one by one. Their voices mixed together saying words in a language I did not know yet somehow my heart understood every word.“By the light that controls the night…”“By the blood that keeps the packs together…”“By the Moon Goddess who chooses her own…”The words wrapped around me like strings that I could not see.A cold wind blew across my skin.My heart beat slowed. Then without warning something hot exploded in my chest.I gasped for air.Pain shot through every part of my body.My knees almost gave way. Before I could fall, Kai's hand closed around mine and Kian stood beside me putting his hand on my back.“You are not alone " Kai whispered, hi
Selena’s POVA month went by fast. Even though I learned something new about Elara and Lyra every day our estate started to feel like home. The babies would. We would get used to it and we would laugh a lot in rooms that used to be quiet. This morning was different though. The estate did not feel normal at all.I saw the servants walking around the garden with roses and moon lilies and musicians were getting ready to play under fancy canopies. Guests were arriving in carriages. I could see the flags with the symbols of our friends' groups waving in the wind.I was standing in front of the mirror in my bedroom holding Lyra and Elara was sleeping in Tina's arms. I just stood there looking at us in the mirror thinking about my life.Tina said, "You have been staring at yourself for a time." She was. Moving her arms gently to keep Elara asleep. "Are you trying to remember who you are?"I laughed a little."No " I said."Then what are you thinking about?"My hands were touching my dress, w
Selena’s POVThe room was really quiet after our daughters fell asleep and even though everyone was still smiling about their arrival things started to feel calmer. It felt like a weight had been lifted off our shoulders. Not because something bad had stopped,. Because something amazing had finally happened after a long wait.I looked at our girls. They already seemed different to me. One of them was frowning in her sleep like she was thinking hard about something and the other one was sleeping really peacefully with her tiny fingers still holding onto Kians hand.I smiled. "They are already becoming themselves " I said.Kian looked at them. Then nodded softly. "They always were " he said. His answer made me feel a little emotional. For months we had been thinking about our daughters. Wondering what they would be like. Now that they were here it was more amazing than we had imagined.Kai leaned over the bassinet. Cleared his throat quietly. "So..." he started to say. He was grinning.
Selena’s POVThe first cry changed everything. It was loud and strong. It filled the whole delivery room. All the other sounds that had been going on for hours just stopped. I started breathing slowly and unevenly and tears came to my eyes before I even knew they were there.Someone laughed quietly.Someone else sniffed. The room got really quiet. It felt special like something important was happening. The doctor said "Congratulations, your daughter" with a warm smile. She was tired. She was still smiling.Daughter.That word meant a lot to me.It was not a baby it was a daughter. The nurse put the baby against my chest and everything else just disappeared.I said "Oh...". That was it.The baby was warm really warm. Her little body was moving up and down as she breathed. One of her tiny hands was on my skin.I just stared at her.I looked at her nose, her tiny head, and the little line between her eyebrows that made her look serious. My daughter. My fingers were shaking as I touched h
Kai’s POVPregnancy did not arrive in my life one day.It crept into my home quietly becoming a part of mornings. Then one day I realized every part of our house was getting ready for someone it had never met.The changes just happened. No one told me about them. They simply... Started. One morning Mrs. Harlow frowned because I tried to pick up a basket of apples.“Oh, no way.”I was surprised.“What’s wrong?”“That’s too heavy for you.”I looked at the basket. Then back, at her. "It’s apples.”“It’s a basket of apples.”“It doesn’t weigh as much as Kai’s pride.”One of the gardeners nearby chuckled.Mrs. Harlow crossed her arms. She was calm like she already knew she was right.“It’s still not happening.”Before I could say anything Kian appeared and took the basket. He just kept walking as he had always planned to.“I wasn’t carrying that " he said calmly.“You just took it from me.”“I helped you.”“It was apples.”“It was something that needed to be done.”“You’re being really ann
Selena’s POVKai clasped hos hands tightly around the glass but stayed quiet, taking slow sips of the water instead.“I’ve never been wanted by my own pack. I was deemed the useless one because I’m fat and now, even my mate chose my sister over me.”The sound of glass shattering against a wall fill
Selena’s POVIt’s been a few hours since I woke up and the room was still empty.Slowly, I pulled the covers off my body and swung my legs over the edge of the bed, placing my palms on the bed and glancing around the room. It was eerily quiet and for some reason, that made me unsettled.I sigh and
Selena's POV Turn around little mouse…I squeezed my eyes shut and slowly, I did. Kai stood in the doorway behind me, hands clasped behind his back, looking calm like he had been waiting there the whole time but his anger was written in the stillness of his body. His muscles were tensed and he was
Selena’s POVI chugged down the entire glass of water and wiped under my lip with a napkin, avoiding Kai’s curious eyes.He slowly lifted the spoon to his mouth, watching me intently as he ate. A strange maid brought a bottle of wine and dropped it on the table before nodding at him and scurrying o
