Alec

By the time the sun’s barely up, I’m already elbow-deep in managing what feels like the world’s longest to-do list. The unprovoked attack on one of our pack members a few days ago hasn’t just rattled everyone—it’s shaken my patience down to its foundation. There’s this relentless, insatiable need to get everything locked down and fortified so everyone knows they’re safe. So I know they’re safe.

“Still with me, boss?” Quincey’s voice breaks through my thoughts as he steps in, holding a steaming mug of coffee in each hand. He hands one to me, eyebrows raised. “Because I don’t think that coffee machine has had a chance to cool in the last twelve hours.”

I snort, taking a grateful gulp. “If we’re going to keep everyone safe, this can’t wait. I don’t care if I run on fumes.”

Quincey sips his own coffee, leaning back against the edge of the desk. “Then you’re going to need all the caffeine this pack can muster. Last I checked, you’ve barely been out of the field in two days. Kai’s been

Her father picks up after a couple of rings. “Alec? Everything alright?” “Yes, sir,” I reply. “I’ve got to leave for a bit—another issue up north. Isadora’s resting, but she could use some company. Nothing serious, she just needs someone with her.” There’s a brief pause before he answers. “Of course. I’m not nearby at the moment, but Janelle and Lianne can be there in a few minutes. They’ve been missing their sister, anyway.” I let out a relieved sigh. “Thank you. Really. It makes leaving her a little easier.” “You know we’re here,” he says, his words carrying a weight of sincerity that reminds me why I’d trust her family with my life. As soon as I hang up, I head out toward the northern perimeter, my thoughts already racing through the possibilities of what’s waiting for us. Each step only intensifies the tension, and by the time I reach the patrol site, it feels like the air itself is brimming with a static charge. Quincey is already there, along with Kai and half a dozen othe

Alec I’ve faced down demons, taken on rogue shifters, and kept three packs safe through all kinds of threats. Watching my wife, pale and queasy, wrapped in three blankets and looking miserable as she huddles over a bucket? I’m pretty sure this is a whole new level of terrifying. “Don’t look at me like that,” she grumbles, managing a faint glare even though she’s barely sitting up. “I’m fine, Alec. Really. It’s just a little bug.” “Right. That’s why you’ve already made three trips to the bathroom and can’t keep anything down? Because it’s alittlebug?” I try to look disapproving while I pass her another bottle of water. She takes it with a grimace, as if the idea of drinking anything else is almost worse than the sickness. “You act like I’m on my deathbed,” she mutters, hugging her abdomen with a wince. “If you’d just rest like a normal person, I wouldn’t have to act like this,” I say, trying not to let my worry show too much. But it’s hard not to when her face is flushed, her voic

He nods, his gaze turning thoughtful as he looks out over the lake. “Guess that makes two of us. So…why did you go on that sabbatical in the first place?”I shift a bit before responding, “I realized I’d been a people pleaser all my life. Always trying to meet everyone’s expectations, always trying to fit in, especially after… Well, you remember how things were when we were younger.” I pause, searching his expression before continuing. “I felt like I didn’t know who I was outside of my family and the pack. I wanted to find some control, some sense of self that was entirely mine.”“And the sabbatical gave you that.”“Yeah. Learning about security systems, how they work, managing equipment—it made me feel… stronger. Like I was finally in control of something, after years of feeling pushed around and, well, powerless.”“I get that, maybe more than you’d think.” He gives my hand a gentle squeeze. “For what it’s worth, I think you did exactly what you needed to.”“I think so, too,” I agree

IsadoraThe lake is glowing with a soft, silver-blue sheen under the twilight, and the air is filled with the scent of pine and mossy earth. But let’s be real—my mind isn’t on the scenery. It’s on Alec, who’s holding my hand in that firm, familiar way, like he’s not letting go tonight, no matter what. We’ve discovered some paw prints near where our patrol unit was attacked, so we can breathe a little easier knowing it’s not demons this time. Rogue wolves, we can handle, so the tension has eased back just a bit, meaning we can finally take a moment to relax.“Picnics aren’t exactly your style, are they?” I tease Alec, giving the setup a once-over as we settle on the blanket he’s spread out by the water’s edge. It’s… cute, I’ll give him that, but there’s a distinct air of Alec’s classic approach—meaning he probably Googled “what to bring on a date picnic” about ten minutes before picking me up. A wine bottle and two mismatched glasses sit off-kilter on the edge of the blanket, looking d

I nod, setting my jaw. “They won’t get another chance. We’ll set up extra posts around here, make sure we have eyes on this spot 24/7 until we know exactly who’s testing us.”Kai exchanges a look with Quincey, her eyes glinting. “Consider it done.”We spend the next hour circling back through the northern edge of the woods, making notes on weak points and other areas that could use more coverage. By the time we make it back to the main territory, I’m feeling the exhaustion start to settle in, but it’s nothing a bit of adrenaline and a strong cup of coffee won’t solve.Quincey claps me on the shoulder as we head back toward the central grounds. “Take a break when you can, Alec. Even alphas need sleep.”“I will,” I lie, knowing full well I won’t be resting anytime soon.Kai gives me a smirk, reading me like a book. “Sure you will. We’ll believe it when we see it.”With a final nod, I watch them head back toward the patrol’s headquarters. But even as they leave, I feel the weight of this
