They had the prisoner in the isolation room before the blood on the inner path had dried.

Asher did not waste the night. Sable stood at the door. Wren stayed close enough to hear every word. Ronan took the wall to my right. The bond sat raw and alert, as if it already knew the conversation would not stay in this room.

The man was bound, still smiling, with a split lip. He looked at me first, not at Asher.

“You should have stayed on the threshold stone,” he said. “At least that ending had a shap

They sanded the crown at first light, with the yard watching.Den held the stone steady with bandaged fingers. Elara sanded. Wren kept the path clear. Briar said the sentence once.“He was asleep. He did not vote. The mark under it is still Garrick’s.”No one clapped. The remnant head wanted a speech and did not get one.The harder work was Den’s mouth. It had been quiet since the grave. Too quiet. At the cook fire he shaped a word without sound, the old even pace, and Elara saw it.“Row,” she said.“I am fine,” Den said.“You are shaping keep. Sit.”He sat. The word came anyway, small, through his teeth. “Keep.”Wren looked at Briar. “Short. Ugly. No rite. We did this with the last living mouth. We do not build a new one for a man we like.”“Agreed,” Briar said.Rex stayed at the aisle end. “Bond is here. I am not part of the close.”“Good,” Briar said. “Two lines and Elara. That is the set.”They did not move him to the bowl. They did not light anything. Elara held his jaw so he cou

Elara checked the grave at dusk because the counts included stones.Garrick’s sign was wrong. The hook was still there. The short line was still there. Someone had cut a second curve over them, crude and deep, so the mark read as a crown if you stood at the path and wanted a crown.“Who had tools?” she said.Asher’s wall man shook his head. “No one on the gate. No one sent to weed.”Wren came with Briar and Rex. Pell stayed on the bench. The called line stayed at chores. This was not a lesson for them.“Not Pell,” Wren said. “His hands are clean. I looked.”Harl was on the row, awake, cloth still on his fingers. “Not me. I have not been off the cot.”Den was not on the cot.He was on his knees at the marker, eyes open, knife on the ground, fingers wet. The new curve matched the width of that blade.Elara did not grab him fast. She said his name first.“Den.”He did not answer. His mouth was slack. His eyes were open and not aimed at the stone. The hand kept worrying the curve, small s

The yard had a story waiting when they got back.Pell had tried not to tell it. The remnant head had helped it grow. By the time Briar reached the gate, people were saying Ronan had stood in the cold in his own coat and called a boy to a chair.Asher killed the first version with facts. “He was on the far bank. The shape was in the mouth of the road. The coat matched because it was his coat, on him, after. Not a verdict.”It was not enough. Verdicts grew faster than facts.Briar stood on the step. She did not take the paper out from under the cup. She did not open the book.“Ronan is not a lid,” she said. “He is not a prisoner. He is on the road because he chose the road. The thing that uses mouths tried his mouth. He bit it shut. That is the report.”The remnant head, off the row again, laughed once. “Chosen. That is a soft word for a man whose cadence lives in our boys.”Rex stood at Briar’s shoulder. He hated the speech. She could feel it in the bond, a tight dislike, not a pull to

They did not take Pell back to the cold.Asher chose the bank at midday. Briar. Wren. Two wall men who had already seen the mouth and not spoken to it. Rex stayed in the yard because the bond had tugged once and Briar would not spend it on a road.“If I hear my name in his mouth and it is wrong, we leave,” she said.“If it is right, we still leave,” Wren said. “This is a check. Not a rescue.”The bend came up pale and ordinary until it was not. The oval sat in the dirt, open at one end. Cold lived in the open part. No face stood in it. No coat.Ronan was on the far bank, where he had said he would be.He held his hands open. Empty. The mended cuff was on his left sleeve. Mud on the hem. The coat Pell had described, on a man whose face stayed put.“Briar,” he said.Clean. His voice. His pace. She stopped on her bank. “Say it again.”“Briar.”Wren watched his mouth. “Any flicker.”“No,” Briar said.Ronan did not cross. “Pell came to the edge. I saw him. I did not call him. Something sto

The tracks went north for forty paces. Then they tangled, as if the feet had been told two things at once.Asher stopped the wall man with a hand. “No farther. Eyes see this. They do not become a line.”Wren was already crouched. “He turned. See the heel. He ran at the bend and came back.”Briar’s cut stayed cool. She hated that. Cool had meant nothing before. “Where do the back tracks go?”“Dark dirt,” Rex said. He had not stayed in the yard. He had come as far as the path edge and no farther, which was its own kind of obedience. “They curl toward the rim path. Not into the bowl.”Elara, who had refused to be left on the row, pointed. “There.”Pell sat on the dark dirt with his back to the stone. Bare feet filthy. Arms around his knees. Crying like a boy who had lost a fight with his own legs.Wren reached him first. “Pell.”He looked up. His eyes were his. Red. Awake. Ashamed.“I sat,” he said. “Then I did not. I am sorry.”“Are you you?” Wren said.“I think so. I do not want the tr

Briar banned the march before the bowls were cleared.“No one goes north tonight,” she said. “No line. No eyes. No boy with a borrowed voice. The road already has a mouth. We do not walk a speaker to it.”The remnant head stood up from his bench. “A boy just said the bank is not far enough. You heard him. Sitting here is how people die polite.”“Sitting here is how we do not feed it,” Briar said.Wren still had a hand on Pell’s shoulder. He was down. His mouth was his again. He looked sick.“I did not mean to send you,” he said. “I did not mean the words.”“We know,” Wren said. “That is why they do not get a march.”The remnant head looked at the yard, not at Pell. “Call it a count if you want. I call it cowardice. The echo told you where to stand. You would rather sand a board.”Asher came in from the gate. “The board says no march. I nailed it. I am not unnailing it because a cadence used a boy.”“Then the cadence is in charge,” the man said.Elara stepped between him and the aisle.
