All through the next day, I keep drifting in and out of sleep. The first time I try to wake up, I feel a headache so painful that my body instinctively knocks me out again.

I wake up around dusk and find Bri beside me. It takes me a minute to remember that I'm in the infirmary.

Bri runs out to call the doctor as soon as I wake up, and I don't even try to stop her because I need to be alone.

Everything around me is in a perpetual state of black and white, with an occasional splash of grey. I can't perceive anything with my nose, and my mouth tastes like... nothing.

I try to remember what made me end up here and why I feel the way I do, but I can't remember anything.

My headache is still there, but my head feels quiet.

Too quiet.

Like something vital is missing.

I try to reach for my wolf, but nothing is there.

I try again.

Still nothing.

I try for the third time, and that's when I'm hit with a cascade of memories from the previous night.

My chest feels like it's going to cave in on itself from the sheer force of the pain lodged in it, and I feel an emptiness that leaves me gasping for air.

And before I can stop myself, the tears start to flow.

I just let them.

Just then, Bri walks in with a doctor hot on her heels. She runs straight to me and hugs me.

“I'm so sorry, Dawg. Jax is such an asshole, and I hope he pays for everything he did to you.” Bri says into my hair.

The mention of his name makes my chest squeeze even tighter.

I look up at the doctor, and his eyes hold a deep well of sympathy for me, along with a little pity.

He taps Bri to give him some space. He does a check-up, which involves asking me a few questions and taking a few vitals. I only answer with nods and a few shakes of my head, my mind everywhere and nowhere at once.

“Ms Vee, I'm sorry for what you went through. But I'll come out and say it, even though you might already know what I'm about to say. You have all the classical signs of a Lunar Rejection.”

Hearing him say it makes it even more real.

A fresh flood of tears starts to fall, but I'm too tired to care or even stop them.

“As you know, your wolf is gone, and so are a few of your senses. For you, it's your sense of smell, your ability to perceive color, and your sense of taste.”

He takes a breath to make sure I absorb what he said before continuing.

“A few of these might come back as time goes on, but we can't guarantee that. But as for your wolf...”

He pauses.

“That is gone. Forever.”

I nod to acknowledge what he said.

Bri is standing in the corner with tears falling down her face. The mascara from last night is running down her cheek, giving her a more ghoulish look.

The doctor nods back at me and reaches for my hand.

“I'm sorry once again.”

He lets go and then turns to Bri.

“Please, get her something to eat, and if you guys need anything, reach out to the nurses on duty. If it's an emergency, they'll contact me.”

With that, he walks away.

Not before I notice the insignia on his ward coat. It's from a sister pack, but I don't know which one because I can't identify the color.

Bri leaves to get me something to eat, and I drift back to sleep.

“Wake up, Dawg. You gotta eat something.” Bri says while tapping me awake.

I take tiny bites of the muffin and small sips of the coffee she got.

It all tastes like cardboard and nothing.

I push it aside and just stare off into space. I keep trying to make sense of everything that has happened so far.

How could he reject me?

I mean, he loved me.

Or at least he claimed to.

With each thought, I can feel my chest get heavier, and nothing makes sense at all.

“So, wanna talk about what happened? I know it's too early, but I heard that it's good to talk about these kinds of things. It helps you process it and stuff.”

I just shake my head and try to snuggle deeper into the bed.

Just then, the door bursts open.

It's Professor Claude, two elders from my pack, and the one person I don't want to see.

Jax.

Outside, everything seemed to continue as normal. The sun blazed overhead, too bright and indifferent. People moved along the streets, laughing, talking, carrying on with their day, but the world had lost all its color. Everything was black, white, or the occasional shade of grey.My chest tightened with every breath, each one scraping painfully against the memories of the past few days.I got into the car and shut the door. Richard entered after me.We drove for about five minutes before Richard's phone rang.“Hello, sir.”Pause.“Yes. She's here with me.”Another pause.“Okay, sir. Understood.”He hung up and made a turn.“Uhm... this isn't the way home. Where are we going?”“There's been a change of plans, Ms. Your father has asked me to bring you to the council office.”He said it in a monotone voice.“But that's supposed to be in the evening.”A knot of dread twisted tighter in my stomach.“That's all I can say, Ms. I have no other explanation to give.”The drive to the council o

After a solid minute or two of Bri beating the shit out of him, I called her off in a bid not to escalate things.“Yo, shortie. It's okay.”With great resistance, Bri stopped. I could still see her jaw tighten and her fist open and close in a way I knew all too well. She was mad. Enraged.I'd only seen this side of her once before, when a group of incel boys thought it was funny to mock her hybrid origins in front of the entire campus. The boys ended up in the emergency room over the course of a week.Everybody knew it was Bri, but nobody had the guts to point it out.“Jeez. You really pack quite a punch... for a girl,” Jax said, straightening his top and dusting an invisible trail of dirt from his clothes.I could see him wince a little, but he hid it well.“What the fuck do you want? Haven't you done enough?” I asked with every ounce of hate and bitterness I could muster.“Chill, babes. I'm not here to fight.”“Chill? Jax, I'm in a fucking hospital because of you. How, pray tell, am

I felt every pair of eyes in the room staring down at me. I gaped like a fish out of water, unable to answer the very simple but grave question.I could see in my father's eyes that he already knew the truth. He just wanted to hear me say it out loud.“Uhm…” I said, unable to form a coherent sentence.“Well, speak up already, girl. I have neither the patience nor the time.” My dad bellowed, his hands shaking at his sides as he tried to restrain himself.“Yes, Father. I was rejected by Jax.”My mother let out an audible gasp. I watched her face go pale before she collapsed. My brother Luke rushed forward and caught her just before she hit the ground.“How did that even happen? Wait, don't tell me. I'm sure he heard stories of you sleeping around with every boy on campus, and he couldn't even stand the sight of you anymore.”My dad's voice was filled with disgust.“That's not what happened…”“Then tell me what fucking happened, Vivian! Why would an Alpha heir reject you if he didn't kno

Before I can say anything, Bri rushes out and stands between them and me.“You've got some guts coming here after the shit you pulled.”“Step aside, Ms Ghouldin. We're here on important werewolf matters, and I'm sure you're not one of them.” Professor Claude says, giving Bri a condescending look.Bri refuses to back down.“Shortie. Just step aside.” I say, my voice feeling foreign and scratchy.“Please.”I add it because I can feel a headache rising, and I can already see the veins on the professor's neck pulsing.Bri finally yields and steps aside.“We'd like to talk to her alone.” The professor says.“I'm not going anywhere. You either talk here or you leave.”“This is an important matter, and it only concerns werewolves.”“It could concern the gods and every fae in this realm, and I'd still not budge. I'm not leaving you guys alone with her, especially with that asshole here.”“Are you threatening…”The professor is interrupted by one of the elders, an older woman with pale hair an

It's the night of the party, and I'm in Bri's room getting ready. There are a bunch of other girls here too, and the place is low-key rowdy, but it helps me take my mind off the past few days.“Girl, what do you think about these low-rise jeans!? I think they look good on me.” Says a red-haired siren girl whose name I can't remember.“Damn, girl, that shi is fire. Mark would definitely be jealous.” Says another siren girl with dark hair. From their brief discussion, I learn that Mark is her ex, who dumped her for a new elf girl in their class, and she's going to the party to make him jealous. My makeup is already done, and I'm already wearing my outfit for the night: a pink dress that accentuates my figure and light accessories. I don't want to do too much, as I'm already irritable from the upcoming full moon.I've already finished Bri's hair, and I did a fantastic job, if I do say so myself. After a few minutes of haggling and giggles, we take some shots and then head out for the par
