The Obsessive Enemy

POV: BRECKEN HOLT

The rain washed over my shoulders, heavy and freezingly cold, but I barely felt it.

I stood near the jagged stone border of Ironveil territory, watching the treeline with my arms crossed over my chest. As Alpha of Ironveil Pack, my entire existence was built around war, blood, and control. I was born to fight. My body was covered in scars from years of holding our borders against the Neighbouring Pack, a cowardly, weak-minded pack led by Alpha Kellen that had been our bitter enemy for generations.

I had never lost a battle. I had never bowed to anyone. My men feared me, my enemies dreaded my name, and my beast inside was usually as cold and unyielding as a slab of iron.

Until tonight.

Miles away, deep within the heart of Frost Pack lands, a strange energy suddenly hit the air. It felt like a crack of thunder ripping through the sky, but there was no flash in the clouds. My jaw tightened as I straightened up, my eyes narrowing in the direction of Kellen's territory. Something had happened over there. Something loud, violent, and messy.

Then, the wind shifted.

It carried a scent across the dark forest that hit my senses like a sledgehammer.

It wasn't the weak smell of the border wolves. It was a thick, heady mix of sweet pine, layered over the intoxicating, rich metallic smell of dark copper.

The moment that scent hit my lungs, my chest slammed against my ribs.

Inside my mind, my wolf went entirely insane.

My beast, who had been dormant and stoic for years, reared back with a ferocious, violent roar that made my eyesight flash bright gold. He didn't just wake up—he took over my mind, clawing at my thoughts with a single, absolute demand.

*MINE.*

*FIND HER. CLAIM HER. KILL ANYONE WHO TOUCHES HER.*

The raw intensity of the urge nearly brought me to my knees. It was a sweet, possessive agony that flooded my veins, making my blood burn hotter than liquid fire. My fangs elongated, scraping against my lower lip as my body screamed at me to run toward that smell. I had spent thirty years of my life in total control of myself, but this single scent turned me into a starving predator in less than two seconds.

Without a second thought, I sprinted straight into the shadows.

I crossed our outer patrol line, ignoring the distant shouts of my enforcers asking where I was going. I didn't care about the border rules. I didn't care about the fragile peace treaties.

All that mattered was the scent cutting through the storm, drawing me closer like a thick iron chain around my neck.

I tracked the smell down to the edge of the Raven River, right where the border met the Deadwoods. The wild, toxic neutral zone.

The scent was stronger here, mixed with the sharp smell of fresh blood and rain. I leaped across the rushing river, my heavy boots landing hard on the muddy bank. The ground was torn up, showing clear signs of a frantic chase. A blood trail was smeared across the damp leaves, winding deeper into the thick fog of the Deadwoods.

Whoever she was, she was bleeding. She was hurt.

A dark, strong rage boiled up from the pit of my stomach. The thought of someone hurting the female who carried this scent made my claws extend, tearing through the leather of my gloves. If Kellen’s pathetic wolves had done this, I would burn their entire pack house to the ground by sunrise.

I pushed through the thick brush, my footsteps completely silent despite my size.

The fog hung low between the massive, rotting trees, but my golden sight cut right through the dark. And then, at the base of an ancient oak tree, I saw her.

She was collapsed in the mud, shivering violently under the pouring rain.

Her dress was torn, soaked in blood and dark river water. Her hair was matted against her neck, but it was her hands that made me freeze. Her fingers were tipped with dark, elongated claws, and faint purple sparks were still flickering weakly across her wet skin before dying out.

She wasn't just a wolf. She was something wild, dangerous, and completely untamed.

A half-shifted beauty lying broken in the dirt.

My heart thundered in my chest as I stepped out of the heavy fog, my golden eyes glowing brightly in the pitch-black woods. My scent—heavy mint, dark chocolate, and roasted coffee—flooded the air around her, completely wrapping her in my presence.

She stirred slightly, her body freezing as my powerful aura hit her. She tried to push herself up against the tree trunk, her gasping breaths coming out fast and frantic, but her knees buckled beneath her weight. She was completely spent, her strength drained from whatever war she had just fought.

I closed the distance between us in three slow, heavy strides.

I crouched down in front of her, my massive frame blocking out the rain and the cold wind. The sweet, dark copper scent rolling off her skin made my wolf howl inside my head, desperate to sink my teeth into her collarbone and mark her right here in the mud.

Slowly, gently, but with an iron grip that left no room for her to pull away, I reached out my heavy hand and wrapped my fingers firmly around her chin.

I tilted her face upward, forcing her to look straight into my glowing amber eyes.

Her dark eyes were wide with terror and exhaustion, her lips trembling, but behind the fear, I could see the blazing fire of a fighter.

My chest rumbled with a deep, murderous growl that vibrated straight through my fingers and into her jaw.

"Who did this to you, little wolf?"

The heat inside the lower hold was unbearable. Massive iron boilers hissed and groaned on all sides, piping red-hot steam through the cramped, narrow gangways of the warship's belly. The ambient hum of the vessel's primary engine vibrated straight through the soles of our tactical boots, rattling the heavy brass pressure gauges along the walls. At the far end of the lowest deck sat the heavy, double-locked door of the primary powder magazine—a vault containing enough high-grade incendiary shells to level our entire territory."Ten seconds on the lock," Soren gasped, his face slick with sweat and black coal soot as he pressed his palms flat against the vault's central iron seal. His blue witch fire crackled wildly against the spell-forged deadbolts, melting the heavy iron tumblers into glowing slag. Beside him, Cade kept his long rifle raised, covering the narrow steel gangway behind us where the sound of heavy, armored boots echoed down the iron stairwell."They're coming down the r

The captured landing barge thrashed against the churning ocean swells, its steel hull groaning under the strain of its forced speed. Thick, sulfurous black smoke billowed from the stern exhaust as Brecken wrestled with the iron helm. His knuckles were raw, his muscular frame locked against the heavy vibration of the diesel engine. The sea mist whipped across the open deck, freezing as it hit our clothes, but none of us felt the cold.Out in the open channel, the Shadow Court’s flagship—a terrifying, six-story ironclad warship—loomed through the darkness like an aquatic fortress."Two minutes until we hit their starboard flank!" Cade shouted over the roar of the engines and crashing waves. He was crouched behind the bow plating, racking the bolt of his rifle. "They’ve spotted us! Heavy turrets are rotating, but they can't depress the barrels low enough to hit us at this angle!""They don't need heavy guns for close range," Lucian said, standing on the edge of the iron gunwale with his

The sea breeze coming off the jagged black rocks of Iron-Clad Cove didn’t smell like water; it smelled like grease, wet wool, and old iron. By three in the morning, the rain had backed off into a mean, needles-in-your-skin drizzle. Down on the rocky shore, eighty yards from where the high tide chewed on rusted pylons, our forward scouts were squatting behind a low wall of stacked sandbags. Nobody was talking. Every wolf there had their mouth clamped tight, the scent of high-octane diesel from our idle scout trucks mixing with the sharp, copper sting of tense adrenaline.I leaned against the cold side of an overturned freight container, pulling a fresh length of cloth around my left palm to cover the gash I’d cut back at the dam. My skin felt hot beneath the rag—not the sick heat of an infection, but that stubborn, low-register simmer that always sat in my blood whenever the four Alphas were close by.Brecken was forty feet to my left, his back to the fog, talking in low, clipped grun

The black armored scout vehicle roared down the narrow, unpaved mountain rally track, its tires spewing mud and loose gravel into the dark ravine below. Thick, icy fog clung to the pine trees, blinding us as we took hairpin turns at sixty miles per hour. Above us, the mountain peak was entirely engulfed in dark storm clouds, but down in the valley below, the distant blue glow of our home perimeter wall flickered faintly through the rain.Brecken was behind the wheel, his broad hands locked onto the leather grip, his golden Alpha aura flaring faintly against the dark dashboard."Sixty minutes until Doctor Vance empties his inventory into the central intake pipe," Cade said from the passenger seat, his tablet displaying a live thermal scan of our home valley's water treatment facility. "I’m trying to ping Thomas on the secure frequency, but the mountain terrain is choking out our radio relays.""Keep trying," I said from the back seat, adjusting my tactical harness and checking the sil

The rain had finally tapered off into a cold, clinging mist that settled over the Sovereign Plaza. On the northern bridge, Marshal Krane’s surrendered troops were disarmed, zip-tied, and loaded into the back of our transport trucks under the strict watch of fifty pack fighters. The news had spread down the highway like wildfire: Minister Vane was dead, the Northern and Eastern provincial vanguard legions had surrendered, and the city’s perimeter was completely locked under the golden warding of the Tribrid line.By three in the morning, the High Assembly Hall was functioning as our central staging ground. In the grand main hall, pack wolves from the lower districts were hauling away the debris from the earlier battle, setting up emergency field hospitals, and organizing supply lines to distribute rations to the civilian districts that Vane had starved during the siege.I stood on the elevated balcony overlooking the main floor, resting my hands against the marble balustrade. The storm over the Capital Court peaked as two hundred armed outer-pack wolves rolled into the city perimeter. Equipped with high-grade tactical vests, heavy automatic rifles, and silver-tipped blades from the Royal Armory, the militia no longer looked like an scattered group of survivors. They moved like a disciplined military vanguard, taking up strategic positions behind concrete barriers, overturned transport trucks, and marble pillars along the city’s outer edge.I stood on the high stone parapet above the Northern Bridge, my black tactical coat snapping violently in the icy wind. Beside me, Cade lay prone on a waterlogged camouflage tarp, his heavy sniper rifle resting on a steel bipod, his scope locked onto the dark highway stretching north into the fog.Down on the bridge deck, Brecken stood alone before a wall of heavy iron tank-traps, his twin broadswords planted firmly into the wet asphalt. Behind him, fifty newly armed pack wolves waited in dead silence, their weapons rai
