THE NEWS CAME as a shock to Alek, he almost toppled over in his chair. He gripped the phone tightly and asked. "Are you sure?"

The vaguely familiar voice of the man came through the speaker. "Yes, sir. I held up the picture against her face. It is her."

Alek could not believe this. He feared to hope that the man was right, only to have his hopes shattered in disappointment.

"I think you should worry, sir," Aaron said, lowering his voice slightly. "She is playing with wild wolves. I tried to warn her against it but -"

Alek smiled softly and relaxed. It was Claire. The human policeman would never understand. "Can I talk to her?" Alek asked.

"Yeah, sure. Just a moment," Aaron said. "He wants to speak with you-"

Alek heard the phone being snatched and a second later, Claire's voice came through. "Alek?"

"Is that really you? Claire?" Alek coughed. His heart contracted and his eyes got wet from unshed tears.

"Alek, it's me," Claire cried.
